Min Requirements for HD editing?

Hey guys I am new to this whole HD thing and had a few questions before I drop some serious cash on an HVX200a. I was wondering what the min requirements would be to be able to edit HD smoothly. I am currently using a MacBook Pro with 2.53 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gb of ram. It only has 230 GB of HD space. Some of have told me that the main thing for HD is having fast HDs I would buy an external HD anyways but I feel like I am missing something. I also have a 20 inch Dell monitor that I plan on using for long editing sessions. If someone could elaborate that would be great. Thanks.

What you have will be fine for Editing HD content. like you said, just grab a few fast and most importantly reliable External drives and edit away.

You'd be surprised what an "off-the-shelf" computer can do these days. Pretty much any mid-range computer can do a great job at basic editing.

Where you will see a difference is in render times. Faster, more powerful machines will render much quicker than than the average computer.

We have portable edit station similar to your system that we use for field work and for that we use a g-tech mini drive as a main storage. We also carry a G-Safe as a back up system to safe guard the content we capture until we return to the shop.

-Do not put your video content on your OS drive as you will compete between the software and footage access.
-Back it up.
-Use FW800 to conect your drives.

hey I figure i would post on here instead of making a new thread. I'm about to purchase a HVX200, my question being is will an iMac 2 gb ram and 500 gb hardrive be efficient enough to edit HD video on? I'm still new the HD P2 cards game and I figure i will need an external drive also, but how does the whole import from p2 work with the imac and is there anything I need to be more concerned about?
thanks

what processor does your imac have?

pretty much the ONLY practical way to get P2 content into an imac is to connect the camera to the computer via firewire/usb.

I don't have an iMac , i wrote that assuming I'd want to buy one because I've played around with my friend's iMac. But now I'm not so sure if I should spend my money on one if it won't be efficient enough to edit Hd footy with, so mind helping me out as to what might be a better choice?
-Thanks

an imac, given that its a newer one with an intel processor will work with DVCPROHD footage just fine. reason i say this is that my OLD powerbook G4 1.0ghz machine edited DVCPROHD footage acceptably.

if you have an intel based imac, there will be no problem with you WORKING with the DVCPROHD P2 footage. the only problem will be with injest. the only 2 ways to get P2 footage into an imac are to:

1. get it on a hard drive from some one else
2. connect the P2 camera to the computer via firewire/usb and transfer one card at a time.
