Hey All
Speed booster arrived today. Tried it on a quick shoot i was doing.. i was using Zeiss 50mm 1.4 glass on it. Adapter to canon mount then to the speed booster. I actually
found the image to be too soft. I think i was doing a good focus but to be honest it was in a gymnasium.. I did notice a bit of a rainbow effect on the lights. ( halo )??
Still willing to work on it but initially it softened the entire image. Any Thoughts??
I was actually waiting for this specific post, and expecting to see it more and more often as people realize that most of the 1.4's are not going to be viable with the Speed Booster. That Zeiss 50/1.4 is already terribly soft wide open, I expect that the softness and/or coma is just amplified.
There aren't many 50/1.4's, and even less 35/1.4 and 25/1.4's, that are actually great wide open to begin with. And by great I mean sharp. For some ODD reason people think that the Canon's are sharp wide open... or, even worse, the Voigtlander 0.95's... which are absolutely TERRIBLE wide open. IMO the benefit of the Speed Booster's in 2~2.8 glass that's reasonably sharp wide open, or glass with an aperture of 1.2, that gets fairly sharp as you approach F1.8~2. The 1.4's likely to be no bueno, but again that's just been my hunch from the announcement date.
Willing to bet that if you threw up the SLR 35/0.95 (which does cover APS-H and will work on the FS700) against a 50/1.2 @ 1.8 + Speed Booster combo, the SLR 35/0.95 would out-perform at least up until 2.8 in terms of sharpness.
JUST my hunch... feel free to disagree and of course, we'll see as more people get their hands on it and really start to test.
I also think MFT could go either way, better or worse. Some glass performs much better at the center, so you double your advantage, and some are terrible performs at the center so you may end up right back where you started.
Looking forward to more videos.
