MBP - Duel Adapter - Kernel Panics

EDITED: Panasonic has updated their P2 drivers to get rid of this problem, so please be sure to update your drivers if you're still having the 4GB problem!

For anyone who's having to make do with the old drivers and can't update right away, I'll leave the rest of the post/thread intact.
*********

Hey guys, there have been some reports here and on the Cow about people using MacBook Pros and the Duel Adapter to offload P2 cards, and getting hit with Kernel Panics. Not a good situation and as this older thread points out, there's at least three points of contention where the problem could be: in OSX, or in the Panasonic driver, or in the Duel driver.

After some digging around and getting some mac experts involved, I think we have a line on what the problem is and a potential workaround for it. It appears that the problem only happens when you have 4GB of RAM installed. If you only have 2GB, you shouldn't be experiencing the problem.

I know that both Panasonic and Duel are aware of the issue, and I'm sure that if either of them finds out that it's not their fault they'll be sure to nag Apple to fix it, so all three potential parties are aware of the problem. No idea if or when a fix is forthcoming though. So if you need to use an MBP/Duel combination, and you've got 4GB, it looks like you have to cut that down to 2GB. And that can be done one of two ways: either by pulling out some RAM (obviously not desirable), or by using a software hack to limit the Mac to using only 2GB for those times when you'd want to use the Duel.

I'm not a Mac user so don't shoot me if I get this wrong, but I'm passing on the findings that a Mac user has put together on how to limit the OS to only using 2GB.

1. Launch the Directory Utility from the Application->Utility Folder. Click the "key" icon to unlock it. Then click "Edit->Enable Root User."

2. Launch the Terminal program, from Application->Utility Folder. Then type in the following command: "sudo nvram boot-args="maxmem=2048"

3. Launch the Directory Utility again, and click the key icon to unlock it, then choose "Edit->Disable Root User".

You'd probably want to find some way to automate this process so you could run a "config for Duel" automated process before using the Duel Adapter; it'll limit the system to 2GB and hopefully prevent any kernel panics from happening.

Later, when you want to restore the system to full 4GB for use with other programs etc., you follow the same procedure above but in step 2 you'd issue a different command to the Terminal program. Instead of the line in step 2 above, you'd use "sudo nvram boot-args=""

You can check the status of your system memory by using the Active Monitor->System Memory in the Utility folder.

Thanky Barry that solved my issues.

2 small additions:

1) sudo nvram boot-args="maxmem=2048" is correct. I think this is a minor typo. Leave the " in the beginning of the command away
2) you have to restart your MacBook Pro after you applied the commands. then it works like a charm

I am done with the Duel adapter. Going to get a G4 just for offloading. I did a concert with it on saturday, and after upgrading the firmware to accept the 16gb cards ( I know, i havent been shooting for a while ) FCP would not import the files after dumping to the external HD. It would import them directly from the duel adapter, but it was slooooooow. It seems like I have had nothing but problems with that thing.

Is there a way to know the status of the ram (does the command changes the ram info in the activity monitor?)

I only have this problem with the P2CMS software, the copy/paste (I know bad bad bad ...) is working.

@ interelectronix : I don't quite understand what you said about the " Do have to KEEP it or do I have to LOOSE it ? and which ones

The command to restore the system did not worked for me, (I think)

Does anyone came up with a automated solution ?

sudo nvram boot-args="maxmem=2048" this is what you should type
"sudo nvram boot-args="maxmem=2048" this is what you should not type

BTW had to use the Duel Adapter quite a lot last week (400GB of footage). Even with the RAM reduction there are problems left. I decided to pull the physical ram out of my MacBook. This worked better but still not perfect.
Problems:
1) at least 1 Kernel panic
2) I had to reboot every time I wanted to start a offload session. It worked without any problems until the MacBook was on and not closed or in sleep mode during the session.

The situation is far from perfect but quicker then a firewire offload.

I have had this problem in the past and find that the only way I was able to offload footage was by the dreaded "Drag 'n Drop" in the Finder. Everytime I would get to around 1gb of footage transferred in P2CMS, the Kernal Panic issue would arise. For the last 6 months or so I have used the Finder without issue.

Now, I am not saying that people will not have issues with this method, because many would disagree with me, I am just saying that this is another potential workaround that has worked for me so far without fail.

Thanks for the heads up Barry. I hope this method works for people.

Cheers,
Ryan

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE !!!!!

I have just recieved the Panasonic PASS Newsletter and guess what.

P2 Driver for Mac has updated.
Improved stability when copying P2 files on a MacBookPro with internal memory exceeding 2GB.

Now you don't need to physically remove or use Terminal. Simply install the update and you are good to go !

Now I installed this p2 driver into my macbook pro and it works great with my duel system and the p2 cards....No Crashing!!!

Now my other question is there something we need to install in our cameras to work with series E cards?

like when 32 gig and 16 gig cards were introduced I had to update my cameras firmware is there another one of those for these new "E" series cards and perhaps for a 64 gig "R" Series card

I'm sorry I am a bit slow on this stuff...but sometimes there are too many drivers and I don't know what to do....

The last time I actually updated my camera was for the 16 and 32 gig "R" series...do I need to do anything else there?

Yes there are firmware updates for the "E" cards, which address some issues with standard-def loop recording and with 12p/15p frame rates.

so you have to install it into your camera or no?

is the last update I did with the 16 gig "r" series and 32 gig "R" series update good or do you need a new one and if so does anyone have a link to the update that would go into the camera for the "E" Series cards???????

Ronster

Yes, if you want full functionality with the "E" cards you need to update your camera. If you've registered your camera with the PASS system they should have notified you already.

I haven't registered with PASS

I think this is the link:

https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/soft/upghvx200_e.htm

I have an hvx 200

I don't have an "A"

which one do I use here to update my camera?

I'm thinking the first one that says:

AG-HVX200/P,E,MC

that is kind of confusing

the Japanese ones on the bottom are clear because the first one there just says hvx200

but I am assuming not to go with the japanese update and rather with one of the three "English" updates....is the first one the right choice and is it the right update for the camera not the computer???????

Sorry I need a little assistance but I got a feeling if i am asking a lot of people don't know this either
