GH4 Magic Mini-Box That Stabilizes Your Footage in Post... :-)

The results look impressive however I don't know about that extra step in post might turn out to be more of a hassle.

This looks absolutely incredible! Not having to worry about steadycams or gimbals while shooting would be a dream for me. Consider me highly interested, especially if priced at less than a GoPro!

My guess is that the "magic" box is recording three dimensional movement data along with your camera's audio track, so that the audio track will be used to sync the 3D info with your video, and then the 3D stabilization software will automatically manipulate your video image to get rid of all the shaky camera movement. This also means that there will be a little bit of cropping to the video image in order to stabilize your subject, which is why they recommend shooting with a 4K camera like the GH4, and probably shooting with loose framing so you won't lose anything important in the final image.

I think it's a very cool idea provided it's reliable and doesn't take a ton of processing in post to produce the final video.

wooooow! If the extra step in processing is simple and if it doesn't affect the video quality this could be extremely cool

Not everyone over there at PV seems to be impressed:

Vitalii:

"LOL. It is not game changer. It is just simple thing helping software stabilization.Good gimble for GoPro will outperform it by wide margin and do not require any heavy post processing."

...But if you had to choose been footage shot with a GoPro or footage shot with a GH4, I would probably pick the GH4 shots every time.

This may not be a game changer or even a life (footage) saver, but it sure is an interesting concept, one that bears some further attention.

Dusty, we don't alway agree but on this I heartily +1 you :)

I'd add from a VFX perspective that such info could definitely help out 3D tracking etc if the tracking software could read the data and integrate it into the algorithm.

Also, if it's sensing movement it in real time and outputting it as audio, you could potentially even do the stabilization in realtime with a little video processing box that could accept the audio feed and the HDMI feed and stabilize.

Same for virtual sets, etc. Even if not 100% accurate, more data is not a bad thing, especially if it contributes to the ecosystem.

Post stabilization will never be as good as just keeping your camera steady in the first place.

While I'm all in favor of getting the best shot you can to begin with, there are times when some unwanted camera movement simply can't be avoided, due to cost, time, location and a myriad of other factors. If this turns out to be a truly new, affordable and (most importantly) effective way to do post stabilization...more power to us.

um.... why doesn't someone just make an APP for the iphone to do this?
I believe this is actually how Instagram's new Hyperlapse app is stabilizing the footage, using the camera's gyroscape data while recording to smooth things out when processing the video.
