T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

Magic Zoom not working

Magic Zoom not working

Hi there,
I am also having problems with magic zoom. I am working in 720p 50f/s mode and it works okay with viewing and for recording footage on the first take. However, as soon as you stop recording the magic zoom windows goes black/brown with faint horizontal lines. I have reported this bug previously on this thread and this has happened on my T2i (actually Kissx4) with every build I have tried since its introduction. Also, ocassionally I have used an external mic (Rode VideoPro) plugged straight into the camera and the recording levels seem to be very low. If I use it without ML I get high recording levels however as we know can't shut AGC off. I am a little frustrated but very appreciative of the work being done - I take my hat off to those in the development team, especially Alex. Keep up the good work!
Cheers Zerocode

I've got the March 11 and it seems to have a good number of features without having way too many, and I've found it to be quite stable.

External Mic 'Rode Videomic' Audio Levels

External Mic 'Rode Videomic' Audio Levels

Actually Soren I just realised that I mis-quote my external mic equipment. I only have the Rode Videomic not the Rode Videomic Pro. Unfortunatlely, I do not have the 20+db gain control on the basic model. I find that with the Rode Videomic to get any descent levels in ML I need manual audio set to the 32db and digital set to at least 18db - and still then there is some tweeking in post. Again, using the mic without ML the levels are fine! I just have that annoying noise that AGC brings with it. Any suggestions anyone. Have other Rode Videomic users had the same difficulties?

For me, the articulating screen is really worth the upgrade. But on the other hand, I won't buy a 60D or a 600D until it has ML ported to it. ML really transforms the camera and is so much more valuable than the articulating screen that I'd stick to 550D for a long time.

Needless to say, looking forward for the 60D or the 600D getting ML. I would prefer the 600D for reasons of cost, but Canon should know that my wallet is in your hands. No ML, no new camera ;-)

PS.
I installed the March 28 version. It's great. The last one I had was Feb 7, and there are so many improvements! But there are two bugs:

1. Cropmarks were not seen ( menu shows 0/0)

2. Switching between four preset displays (the config menu) doesn't do anything.

The menu is getting better and more usable.

The one thing that I would like improved is the handling of the clear screen function. When you half press the shutter to get a clean screen, you don't see the cropmarks.
That partly defeats the purpose of the clear screen, because you need the cropmarks, at least the matte, for framing. I wish there was an aspect ratio matte option
that would stay put even when you clear everything else. Or that one could set the clear screen function to exclude the cropmarks.

Are your crop marks in a folder titled "cropmks"? They are kept there now instead of on the root level.

Try hitting the "disp" to switch between the displays.

Personally I like the crop marks clearing, because it lets me check when the boom is just outside the shot, or if there is anything else slightly below or above my crop marks.

Yes, my cropmarks are in the folder named cropmks. It was there already in a previous version and it worked. Now it doesn't.

Hitting Display when ML menu is on and "DISP profiles" is selected does change the display number. But the display in the status bar is always "Disp 0" and when you change a Live View setting the changes is always effective regardless what the DISP Profiles" number is.

Personally I like the crop marks clearing, because it lets me check when the boom is just outside the shot, or if there is anything else slightly below or above my crop marks.

That's a good point. The best way to deal with it is to make the matting part of the cropmark semi-transparent but always on.

If you do a short half-press, it will only clear zebras (and leave the cropmarks). You can try changing clear.preview.delay in the config file (set it at 5000 for example).

Any reason you don't use the latest build?

Check out cropmarks like "Cinesco3", they've got see-through gray bars instead of solid black, so anticipating a boom or other unexpected things in your frame doesn't require a clear screen. super useful.

Hello...
I have the latest build and Im having some problems with focus peak...
While at 720p50 is working great...I cant make it to work at 1080p25. Instead of the normal colored edge lines on the points that are in focus, I get a squared area in the middle of the frame with colored dots that are flickering like crazy...! The only thing that seems to be ok with them its their color, which is the one I choose from the ML menu...

Alex, thank you for all your efforts! You are doing a great job...

Works fine here. BTW, you are using the MORF algorithm, which is very sensitive to ISO noise (it needs good light).

In 720p mode, it uses the low-resolution buffer and the HDIF algorithm for compatibility reasons (there are some problems with the hi-res buffer). HDIF algorithm is much less sensitive to noise, but is fooled easier by high-contrast out-of-focus edges.

Thanks again my friend...
I ll see what I can do to make it work for me and I ll report back in a couple of days when I ll have internet again...
I might upload a video showing what is going on in 1080 mode to my camera...

Try both algorithms and try adjusting the threshold. If it still doesn't work, post a few silent pictures from your scene (they are used for computing focus peaking).

Hi there, are there any upcoming builds for the 550d?
I am still having problems with the hdmi output. Anyway, it seems to be easier for me to connect he camera to a laptop and watch the clear image while having all the settings on the camera display. Unfortunatly, the EOS Utility does not have fullscreen support and the zoom frame is always visible...

I also see some freezes from time to time, but I cant reproduce them.

Keep up the good work (a tiny donation is on the way)

Best regards and happy easter days,
Dorian

Upcoming build is coming tomorrow (I hope), but nothing on HDMI side, since I don't have any hardware for testing yet.

Right now I'm trying to enable audio monitoring without having to unplug the cable between reboots (it just worked!)

Thanks for noticing. I switched now to the last build and the bugs indeed went away.

But, the half shutter clears the zebra and leaves the cropmarks, which is great, but it also leaves the histogram/waveform. It would be great if it could clear everything except the cropmarks.

The Display number is only visible briefly during switching (there is nothing on the top bar as written in the manual).

THANKS for the amazing work!

Just a heretical thought about the UI. I know this may be too much against the way things work now to bother and maybe there are reasons I don't know why it is impossible. But. In the Canon UI logic the half shutter is used to engage metering and AE/AF. While framing can is done without engaging it. The current ML UI reverses this logic by cluttering the screen by default and requiring an action to clear it.

It would make sense to try to stay close to the Canon UI. That would mean keeping the screen clean (for example, nothing but cropmarks) by default, and assigning the clutter to the half shutter. For example, the Half Shutter could be toggled between Engaging 1)Peaking 2) Zebra 3) Waveform + Histogram 4) 2 + 3 5) 1 + 2 6) 1 + 3 6) 1 + 2 + 3

Another option is perhaps to make half shutter draw peaking and the Av +/- draw zebra/waveform/histogram. This is logical since half shutter is connected to the AF and the AV+- is connected to changing exposure.
