Hey a1ex, the zoom during recording box is the most indispensable feature yet! But since I use vintage manual lenses, I find myself often wishing to have a similar function in still shooting mode.

I usually zoom in to check and tweak my manual focus, and it makes it difficult to then frame my shot (have to keep using the preview zoom in/out). Any chance of adding this live zoom / magic box function for still shooting?

You are talking about the Magic Zoom feature, right ?
I use only manual lenses and I can access this feature, in my understanding it has nothing in common with the lens.
There are two modes for it :
- Toggle ON/OFF with the usual Canon zoom button during recording ("Zr, Med, NW" and "ZF, med, NW")
- Always on ("ALW, Med, NW")

Maybe a ON/OFF toggle mode when shooting still could be good too.

You are correct, and I have stated it incorrectly, except that there is some difference in the behavior with manual vs. auto lenses where the lens focus is not connecting to the camera. In those cases, ZF doesn't function.

I can get the Magic Zoom functionality as follows:

Canon mount auto lenses:

--

Movie Mode

Zr (push zoom button – only during recording)

ZF (adjust focus barrel – during recording or when not recording)

--

Still Mode

ZF (adjust focus barrel)

-------

Non-canon manual lenses (sorry, I don't have any Canon manual lenses):

--

Movie Mode

Zr and ZF (push zoom button – only during recording)

ZF requires the focus connection with the lens so adjusting the focus barrel has no effect.

--

Still Mode

Again, ZF doesn't work here because there is no focus connection with the lens.

-------

ALW works in all modes for both types of lens.

-------

That's the way it works for me, and I assume that is what's intended.

You can also cover the LCD sensor and press Zoom In when not recording, or in photo mode.

??

You mean if I put my hand in front of the proximity sensor that normally turns the display off? I just tried that and it doesn't seem to respond at all to that (when in live view mode, I'm pretty sure its not supposed to do anything when you cover that, right?).

Maybe I'm just not understanding what we're all talking about here. Is there a way currently to have the little zoom box during stills mode to help focus without losing the composure of my shot? I'm finding myself considering hitting record so that I'm able to bring up the zoom and then take a picture during movie recording (which is just a ridiculous way to do this if you ask me).

For the record, touching the focus barrel never does anything on my lenses, even the auto-focus ones that DO interface with the camera (Tamron 17-55 2.8). I heard it works with the kit lens, but I never use that one. So, I don't mind having to press a button to bring it up like I do in movie mode.

When in Live View mode, you have to cover the sensor and press the Canon zoom button "+" at the same time, then to remove the Magic Zoom frame, cover the sensor and press the Canon zoom button "-" .
Personnally, I use my left thumb to cover the sensor and my right thumb to press the buttons.
That all is explained in the Magic Lantern manual ! There are a lot of shortcuts.

Also, make sure that your Magic Lantern version has this feature.

Ah, I'm still on the 3/11 build. However, I just set it to ALW, Med, NW, so now it is always there, which works for now. It'd be nice to be able to toggle without going into the menu. Maybe time to update my version again.

Is there a way for HDMI out to not be SD resolution via ML?

They tried to do this via ML on the 5D, however from what I've heard it never worked 100%.
I think its generally believed to be a hardware limitation. The processor is too busy encoding video/etc to ALSO be outputting HD during filming. The only camera that offers this feature really is the 7D, which achieves it by using 2 image processors. All of the other Canon DSLRs are limited to a single chip design, which I'm assuming means no. It won't work.

When I am in the ML Expo menu, I can only increment the values I select with Set, i can't find a way to decrement the values.
Is it the normal behaviour ? Anyway, there are the shortcuts for that.
Just asking.

Also, when i turn the top wheel in Live view mode for changing the shutter speed, the Canon bottom bar overlaps the ML one and is displayed for a few second, is that also the normal behaviour ?

Right, thank you
Sorry, that is written in the manual... Did not see it.

The Play button also decrements the value, just like DISP.

I installed ML tonight to my t2i no problem.

But I don't have some of the menus. Namely I don't see ISO in the Shoot menu as well as some other options that are in the tutorial videos.

Can't find it in the documentation, it lists ISO under the shoot menu, but I don't have it?

Hi,

It might be that you haven't set your Movie exposure to manual in the Canon menu. I'm not certain though because I use an early release of ML and the menus have been reorganized in the later versions.

:)

Thanks, but I have done that. Noticed when it was moving shutter speed all over.

Nevermind. Appears the instructions don't reference the newest builds. I just installed magiclantern-2011Mar29.550d.fw109.topbar.alex.zip and now have access to iso shutter and lots more.

Hi all

Wondering if anyone can help, I had the March 12 Release installed on my T, It has been working wonderfully. I had not kept up with the thread here for a while and last night, I was eager to install a newer build when I saw how many more had come out since my current install. I installed the March 29 Build. I dont know if I am missing something, but I cannot scroll through the different menu tabs. The UP and Down buttons work as they should, but My L/R buttons only change the value of the current selection in the Audio Tab window, not the window itself as they used to. (The set and Disp buttons still change the value as they used to) I cannot access the other menu windows when I try to use the L/R buttons now??
Also, when I hit the Canon Menu button, my up/Down buttons now change the back light feature and will not allow me to scroll up and down between the options in the CANON menu screen?? Bizarre??

I unistalled and re-installed,... same thing. Did the menu navigation buttons change or is something Amuck with my Cam here? In any case, Great Work Guys!!! I tip my Hat to ML!!

Hi all

Wondering if anyone can help...

It sounds like something is covering your LCD sensor - the small rectangular double window between the LCD and viewfinder. Do you have a loupe installed? In the latest builds the LCD sensor is used as a shift key to provide more shortcut keys. Try the March 31 build, it has an option to disable the LCD sensor shortcuts.
