T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

Which build were you using?

It may be related to the bug which caused ERR80 when taking raw pictures in burst mode (it may have side effects at shutdown, too).

Ah! I may have screwed up myself, I thought I was using the one from 3/28 called "bugfix" but I have the one just prior loaded.

I'm about to update to the latest one now.

Thanks for the reply!

And to Lenilenapi, I had no external monitor hooked up at all when I was shooting, or for playback.

If one uses, say, a 45MB Class 10 card... will it help ML in achieving greater Q-Scale/Bitrate ?

I just read one guy who claims that he has a UHS card (Sandisk 16GB Class 10, 45MB/s) and it seems that the bottleneck is within the t2i/550D, not the card itself...

What is your opinion ?

The question is fine, since ML has trouble installing if a battery grip is attached. It may "marry" the camera to that grip (don't know why it happens).

I'm not aware of any issues regarding presence/absence of lens.

I didn't have the time to install it before I had a lense in my hands but anyway it would have been hopeless :
I realised that an SD(HC) card reader is needed for the installation.
More precisely, when the card must be considered as a mass storage.
Before I started to read the installation process, it wasn't obvious to me that it would need a card reader.

If you allow me to suggest something, I think it could save some time to new users if there was a statement in the manual (but not only) about this extra tool that seems to be compulsory.

I've never met anyone with a pro camera that didn't have SOME kind of SD reader for their cards.
Especially since most of us shoot with more than one card, and it would be annoying to have your camera as the only reader when loading up footage.

You can get an SDHC reader for so cheap these days, I would really assume everyone has one. I got a cheap Chinese one for less than $1 that I keep in my bag for those times I don't have one available. I've got another one attached to an old laptop (from 5 years ago) that was also about $1-$2.
Both my main computer and laptop have them built in. I didn't even know they still made them without!

Audio monitoring makes the screen go black

Audio monitoring makes the screen go black

[This is my first post. If there is a better forum for this question, I'd be grateful for guidance. - Carl]

We're trying Magic Lantern on our 550D using the March 13th and 24th firmware. The goal is good audio for a film shoot my 15-year-old son is doing on Saturday.

Before recording, the external mic is working and the USB/AV headphone monitoring works, but then when the display turns off to save power, it cannot not be turned back on. (I expect the "DISP." to turn it back on.

Are other folks not having this problem? We'd be grateful for workarounds, suggestions or build numbers without the problem.

p.s. Ben's film web site: http://slugco.com with "Sparks in the Night", his film noir spoof, and the trailer for "Mack", inspired on Macbeth but set in today's world of art.

my understanding is that the Firmware update only says "boot from the SD card" and ML is completely on the card, and you can put on any version without any problems

I understand that, but the very first time someone puts ML on their card/camera - is everything you need included in every build? I installed it about 10 builds ago and have been updating all along, but I am sharing the info with friends, and am not sure if I just send them the latest build and they have everything needed, or if I have to go back to a particular build to do the initial installation.

I will let a1ex confirm all this but as I understand it, what you do only once is :
- install the firmware via the firmware update in the Canon menu with the magiclantern.fir file which is the same one included in every build
- make the card bootable

Then, whenever you want to update your version, you just unzip the archive given by a1ex on the SD card.

So yes everything is included for a first setup on a new card and cam in each build.

However, on Step 0. of the Install PDF file, one can read : "Download this release: magiclantern-0.2.0.rc1.550d.fw109.zip."
What is the purpose of this step since the only file we take from this ZIP archive is magiclantern.fir which is, as said above, always included ?
If I have understood the process correctly, what "contains" the updates on each build is the autoexec.bin file and some other files.

offtopic: ablout card readers
make sure you use a good one, you may be getting lots of binary errors when transfering your files to the computer; on a PC, you can run a binary check of your files with the fc command on a shell window; of the three card readers I have at home (all around $10), one is awful (nearly every file above 50MB reports binary errors), the other two are better but not perfect (still unable to copy a full 32GB card without at least four or five binary errors)

Thank you for the advice.
I went to buy one today, 15€ (21$)... so called "all in one". Looks, OK for what I have tried, that is not much.
fc seems to be for "file compare", I assume you compare the file on the card and the transferred file ?
I am running Linux, the equivalent would be to use the cmp command that compares byte per byte.
A stronger check would need the md5sum command, basically creates a hash out of both files to compare.

Slightly Off topic too :
I am following the Build Instructions here : http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Build_instructions/550D
But I can't figure out what and where exactly the file has to be edited on Step 1.

I would also like to thank everybody who got involved in developping Magic Lantern, it's definitely a must have on my new camera. And if I am trying to compile ML, it's because I would like to participate with my small knowledge in C.

Try the Erase button (it forces the display on when you try to display the ML menu).

Erase didn't work for me, but I think I found a work around: There is a Canon setting called "Auto power off" that was 30 seconds, but I've now changed to "Off".

Should I post a bug on this?

Thanks,
Carl

Does the camera come back on if you hit the video button or shutter release?
