T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

Hello

I got a 550D 2 days ago and installed the newest version of ML 5minutes ago. v0.2.

It seems to be fine with a small test. Although the menu panes seem to flicker a bit. Is this normal?

Hi, I used the newest ML build to shoot a short last weekend and it was great!

But there were also a few issues:
- sometimes when starting the camera, the screen remains black and the activity led stays on. To solve this, I have to change the mode to photo and then back to movie (I will try, if this happens without button remap)
- from time to time the movie recording just stops, even with FW default. The sd card is a Transcend 16gb class 10.

Keep up the good work Alex!

Best regards,
Dorian

I have something to report about the Audio meters:

1. It seems that they react rather slowly. If I clap my hands to see if they are working I get nothing, but if I sing a long note then I see them. But even short "Ha!" sounds don't register.

2. Upon first startup of the camera, the audio meters aren't reflecting what the menu is set for. I had a JuicedLink mixer going in, menu set to Ext Stereo, but when I would make sound into one mic, both L&R meters react, as if it's the internal mic picking it up. Then I hit Play button to redraw, and they work correctly (except for the slow reaction time.

Just wanted to get that on the record, and see if anyone else gets the same thing. Anyone?

I think you're seeing ML's boot time. For various reasons (some of which have to do with slow SD cards, if I understand correctly), ML takes a few seconds to fully boot and load all settings. During that time, the camera's defaults seem to have control, including audio. I think at first what you are seeing is in fact the internal mic, which will then properly reflect the mic of choice when the drawing is refreshed or some event (like pressing record).

These are just my own observations.

Hey a1ex, what do you think about sdxc cards and avoiding the 4GB file limitation? I just caught wind of this recently... The t2i is rumored to support it?

For those worried about the cable price, just do a simple search.

There are a lot of other alternatives for under $10.

"Mini Usb to 3.5mm" Will give you plenty of results. It seems there are a lot of Andriod/smartphones that have mini-usb but no stereo headphone jack. So there is a market for them and there are other manufacturers. HTC even makes one.

im not certain about this but the 4gb limit is a factor of both temperature and the card formatting as fat not ntfs or exfat

i hope im wrong but we may be stuck.

This limit is not only from FAT32, but also from 32-bit arithmetic used inside the camera. So... it's not easy.

The save appears to come after the "sensor cleaning", so it's probably best not to pull that sd card too quickly when switching off.
If you open the card door, it will save the config file earlier (you will see the red light). Don't remove the card while the light is on.

the meters seem to reflect "internal mic" (both L & R) on restart.
In my tests, it only happens in the first few seconds before ML is fully loaded. I suspect it may happen randomly, though.

if that "v0.2" means the one from the 550D ML wiki page, it's a pretty old build

newer ones have solved or minimized some issues, and added lots of awesome new features, the latest one being focus assist (zoom while recording)

look on this thread for the latest build posted by a1ex

Ah, so its more than just a file system issue. Interesting. But you are implying that it *IS* possible, just not easy.
So, are you saying that because the architecture of the rest of the system is 32bit, it can't allocate more than 4GB at a time?

This forum may not be the venue to get into excruciating detail, but I'd love to hear more about how the files are stored, what limitations there are, and see if I can be of any help.

Those will not work, the cable that canon uses is a custom cable with pins on the top that are not there in other usb cables.
There are cheap adapters to use (30 cents) with the canon cable

Im having two problems with audio:
1st. When the camera is set to stereo input, the left channel reads higher than it should. Theres no extra noise or hiss coming through, in either the audio monitoring or in recorded media, but it always reads higher. Even when I don't have a Mic in it reads -34 instead of -40.

2nd. I use molded in ear isolation monitors, which are great because i can only hear whats coming through the Mic, but they are a little loud. I know theres a 0,+2, +4, and +6 to headphone output, would it be possible to add in negative numbers?
Thanks guys, you are awesome! especially Alex!

Haha, first time when hearing the audio output is too loud :)

For 1, are the meters wrong and the recorded sound has the same volume in both channels?

In the menu, you change the total number of profiles (i.e. if you put 3 in the menu, in the bottom bar you will see 0, 1 and 2). If you put 1, it will be a single profile (0), which actually disables this feature.

I'll check the others tomorrow.

Mar 24 build:

My experience with the display profiles is that when I set the menu for 4, the 4th (3) is a completely blank display (LCD is working and I get what's coming TTL), regardless what I set in LiveV. There is no display of either Canon or ML at all. However, half-pressing the shutter button brings up the ML display settings, with the Canon bottom bar for a moment, then it returns to blank display.

Again in display 3, when I press record, I get the tally light blinking but no record indicator on the LCD. Also, the camera seems prone to locking up while recording with display 3 selected.

As a general comment, I haven't been running ML long enough to know, but I'm getting a lot of thermometer icon indicating a hot cam with this build. Battery getting pretty hot.

Another observation is that motion detection turned on, doesn't seem to write to the config file, even when saving manually. It still is off on reboot. (and I have no idea what to do with it ;)

Mar 14 build

Since I'm reporting, I'll mention that I took the Mar 14 build out on two commercial shoots last week (one video and one stills) and had a fair amount of locking up of the camera requiring battery removal to get out of.
