Magic Lantern Firmware

You need to use the firmware that ML is programmed for. If the ML manual says to install firmware 1.1.0 (and that version only is listed), you're taking a chance of screwing up your camera if you use anything different. I'm using ML with my t2i. I followed the instructions and installed the firmware update the ML manual instructed and everything is fine. You might also want to find out if there is a limit to how many times you can update the firmware. I recall reading something about that, i.e., that if you change it too many times the camera will stop working and you'll need to send it in to Canon.
 
So what do those of us with 60Ds do if we want to try ML? All the links to upgrade firmware go to Canon's website which will now only upgrade you to 1.1.1 instead of 1.1.0.

This is a great website for an AWESOME tool! $10 is quite reasonable for the download too. I've contributed before since the tool is so useful. It allows the developers to really develop this into something with the stability of the Canon firmware. Thanks for the link.
 
so i noticed an interesting, much-anticipated update on the magic lantern wiki the other day, I'm surprised to see it hasn't been mentioned here yet. a1ex, care to comment?

I found the 600D T3i is the best price performance among Canon DSLRs. So I have a question about audio:

I would like to know if I can use the options in the original canon firmware to do manual audio adjust even if the ML is instaled. I want to to go to 600D T3i Sound Recording Menu and change Sound Rec. to Manual and adjust the Rec Level. Is this possible?

In the ML USER GUIDE i found: "The 600D/T3i already has manual audio control, but right now it's not possible to change audio settings from Magic Lantern. You can only use audio meters during recording."

Does this means the audio options in the original firmware are unavailable after installing ML?

In the ML USER GUIDE I also found: "Does Magic Lantern completely replace Canon firmware? No. Magic Lantern runs from the card, as an add-on over standard firmware. You will still be able to access all Canon functionality."

So does this mean I can exit ML menu and go to the 600D T3i original camera menu and adjust the audio levels manually and than go to ML menu again?
 
Yes you can still adjust the audio levels in the original Canon menu. The Canon and ML menus do not interfere with one another and you can jump between them with no problems.

The only audio option you can adjust with the ML menu is to show or not to show the audio meters on the screen.

Thanks a lot for your answer, this is exactly what i needed to know.
 
Note that the T3i cannot disable AGC, so there is a risk of a loud hiss coming through in your audio. The only way to get around this is to plug a Videomic Pro into the T3i as it can output a hot signal to "trick" the AGC.

For this reason, I use the T3i for low composed shots only and the majority of my shoots are from the T2i.

What I am planning to do is to use the Juicedlink Cx211 preamp to increase the signal gain before input to T3i, so I can manually dial down the audio levels in T3i and I am hoping this will avoid hiss. I used to do this with the HV20 camcorder and it worked perfectly. with the cx211 I can use two lavalier mics, one in R and other in L channel to mic two talents at same time and increase the signal gain before input to camera to allow manual adjust in the camera sound rec level to a minimum and avoid hiss.

Just to clarify- the 60D and T3i offered a native gain control in the Canon menus, which will mostly get you around the AGC problem. However, those really only control the digital gain levels. To get the best sound you can, you'll need to turn the digital gains off completely and adjust the (albeit limited range of values) analog gain. That is where ML comes in and offers something you can't do from the Canon menus.

The t3i however, since it has a new and different audio chip, does not support this kind of control in Magic Lantern yet (unless I missed something, I believe full control of the audio chip is still unavailable). So, for what its worth, between that and audio monitoring, you are still better off using the T2i for anything audio related.
 
Audio controls work on T3i in nightly builds. No idea how it compares with the other cameras.
