Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

The spot where I walk my dog has eagles in the spring and fall. Whenever I point out the sound of the eagles, people always say "Are you sure that's an eagle? They don't sound like that in the movies." I blame that audio sample and foley artists who never get out into the wild. Now people hear a real eagle and think it's not since it doesn't sound like the canned hawk sample that's been used over eagle footage for the past fifty years. The next time I use an eagle in a movie, I'll mix a Wilhelm scream into the audio track!

Wilhelm and the eagle or both a bit of inside jokes for sound folks. They seem to try to sneak them in if any way possible. The hawk sound is cooler than an eagle, so it gets used. Just like cars with 4 cylinder engines getting V8 sounds and guns sounding totally different than the real thing. Why not? Sounds better!

okay, so i see how the 5d mark III can record raw. thats great news but im still wanting more. i need the camera to levitate slightly off the floor and come to me whenever i call it.

do you know if canon will be bringing out a firmware update for this or will i have to rely on a magic lantern hack?

Can anyone tell me how to trigger/activate the ML Magic Zoom box using a half press of the shutter button on the 5d3. I have it set up like this on my 5d2 but cant get it working on the 5d3. Thanks in advance.

I don't think the camera will do it but Zacuto should start working on that right away... :p

Is there an application for PC that works like RAWmagic and shows no vertical decoding lines?

RAWANIZER works for me Miguel. The vertical banding was a raw2dng issue and I think this was improved on latest releases.
With Rawanizer, you can update the raw2dng when it improves by replacing the file in the install folder.

BATCHELOR is ok if your using 5dIII since you can use exfat and have spanned files. As of current version (3.0 alpha) Batchelor cannot handle
split files from 5DII.

For some reason I can't record more than 4gb when I shoot at .5 fps on 5Dmk3, but when I'm doing regular speed, 24 or 25 fps there is no problem going over the 4gb limit (the card is exfat formatted). Maybe this is an old issue, I haven't updated ML in a month.

Took the 5d2 for an evening stroll and try to get use to the raw video work flow. Used only one lens, a 24-105 f4L.

Had a couple of Komputerbay 1000X 64gig cards.

Also had a Mosaic VAF5D2 filter used.

Conformed and slight grade in Resolve lite finishing in Edius.

Thanks for posting your film, Ted; very inspiring. I've been experimenting with a 50D (nothing worth posting here yet) to get some personal experience with the RAW hack. I can't put as much time into it as I would like at the moment, because I've resumed shooting again on my long-term film project this summer, but what I like most with raw is the difference in the post grading potential. Amazingly, things are still changing by the week on the raw ML threads so there's always lots to read and keep on top of; really appreciate you keeping us updated.

I have just started to test the raw function and have a problem.
When using the 5D2 the highest resolution I get continuous recording with is 1600x670. From what I have gathered online people seem to be able to shoot 1880x740, so I guess I am doing something wrong or that the card is faulty.
I am using the aug 18th build with a Transcend 32gb 1000x card. I have not tweaked anything in the menus or anything and have only formatted the card in camera(I have read conflicting views about this online). I have the latest firmware version from Canon, if the latest magic lantern starts on previous versions.
I did a benchmark test on the camera and got approx 56 MB/s in write speed.

klas,

heres a good guide based on my tests you can refer to.

The highest possible res to record is at
1880x1058 16:9 = 1049 approx frames

Highest continuous recording is at
1880 x 940 2:1 = record till your CF card is full (64gig around 15 minutes)

Highest 16:9 continuous recording is at
1728 x 972 = record till your CF card is full (64gig around 15 minutes)

Highest res in crop mode is at
2144 x 1076 = 358 approx frames

near full HD res in crop mode is at
1920 x 1076 = 1223 approc frames

Highest 16:9 continuous recording in crop mode is at
1856 x 1044 = record till your CF card is full (64gig around 15 minutes)

I'm using the latest build dated aug 16 by a.d.

make sure you have small hacks to on.

in canon menu set stills to;
RAW= none
Jpeg= L or S.

Autopweroff to 15 min or OFF depending on your card.

that should help.

LensRentals just got in the 5D3+RAW bandwagon. Now you can rent a 5D3 with a Transcend 1000x card and ML preinstalled. Read about it here:

Interesting quote: "We are not saying the Raw Hack is perfectly stable, actually it is wise to keep a backup camera on hand; however, at this point in time we don’t think the hacked cameras are any less stable than the RED Scarlet, and that’s one of the most popular cinema cameras we carry." I asked them in the comments to back this up with data when the rentals start going out, but I'm not sure they'll want to do it.
