Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Also, you mentioned you'll be renting a mkIII for your shoot, make sure it already has ML bootflag enabled if not, you better ask the owner if you can install ML on it because, last time I checked, installing ML on the mkIII will affect wake up time from stndby, with ML installed on the mkIII wake up time becomes 1.5 to 2 seconds. This is bad for those using their cameras for stills as that delay will make them miss a shot. AND there is no way to remove the bootflag for now.

This only affects the mkIII.

Ted, I have not heard about the wake up time thing. So once I install ML on my MKIII the wake up time will be permanently changed to 1-2 seconds even if I remove ML? Thanks

That's the problem there. You can't. The developer's have not yet, to my knowledge at least, made a bootoff.fir that will essentially remove the bootflag from the mkIII.
Even if you insert a card without ML in it, the bootflag is still in "ON state".
To my knowledge that is the ongoing issue for mkIII users who use their camera both for video and stills.

I'm copy pasting below some notes and tests done by another ML/mkIII user which I included in my own install guide.

Currently, once ML has enabled bootlag in camera there is still no way to remove it.
Resume from sleep and switching the camera on using the on/off switch take the same amount of time. I'm measuring from shutter press or turn-on to when the AF points appear in the viewfinder.
• 0.1s: load time without boot flag enabled (from what I've read, obviously can't test)
• 1.25s: load time with boot flag enabled, no SD card, or SD card with no ML
• 1.7s: load time with boot flag enabled and ML-equipped SD card present
So the lion's share of the time penalty seems to be in simply having the boot flag enabled.

Thanks for the follow up Ted. I hope they can get the time back to the original amount as I am one of those people. Good to know.

I have no idea where to find the latest updates/news about the Raw recording.
Can anyone tell me where to find this info or if you mind answering my questions?

*Hoping I can actually shoot for several minutes and not just a couple of seconds.

5DIII:
-Is it possible to shoot 24fps, 1080p yet, or possibly at higher quality?
-Can I shoot 60fps or slower?
-I've look at many 64Gb CF cards the fastest writing speed I found was the SanDisk Extreme with 160MB/s - $300. Why is there no mention of this but the Lexar or other unknown brands only?
-What is my average/longest record times? I want this to be reliable and not be able to shoot only 10 seconds or so, but a several minutes as if I were to use this on a professional shoot.

Latest builds: http://www.magiclantern.fm/downloads.html

1. Yes. Continuous 24fps at full HD is supported.

2. Yes with caveats: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5472.0

3, Is that 160MB/s card available yet? And where?

4. Continuous record times in HD 24fps with 1000x CF cards.

On the latest build I have used on the 5dmk2 it says that changing the control dial to essentially anything but manual with disable the bootflag. I have not tested this, but I figured I would mention that it is in the newest build for 5d2

I believe that the 5D3 CF controller is UDMA 7 - but, and please correct me if I'm wrong, this is with the newest firmware. As ML runs on 1.13 on the 5D3 I'm not sure the UDMA 7 capabilities are fully exploited.

I don't know where some this stuff comes from. Lots of people have no idea what they are saying. The 5D3 CF controller is and always has been fully UDMA 7. Nothing has changed in that regard with the newest firmware. Canon have made no such claims in the newer firmwares about write speed increases.

There is no reason that new Sandisk card won't work in the 5D3. In fact, I'd bet you a paycheck it does, but it may not be any faster than the Lexar 1000X UDMA 7 cards.

I think some of the confusion comes form previous firmware releases for other Canon Cameras but that is no excuse for misinformation. The 5D2, 1D4, 7d, and 50D all got firmware updates to work better with UDMA 7 cards because they are not UDMA 7 capable, while the 5D3 was fully UDMA 7 from the get go.

On B&H Photo, one reviewer said this:

"I really love this card; fast and durable. The only thing I've found is that they don't are as fast as advertised; you have to understand they test this cards with particular equipment and NOT with your every day work devices. I purchased two, and they both max out at 98 to 105 mb/s with the Blackmagic app and a usb3 UMDA 7 reader... That's why I gave 4 stars.

It works just fine for ML RAW up to 1080/24p and you can get decent 60p resolutions. I've done 1080/30p but it's not that reliable nor consistent.

Sorry if this has been answered already. I tried to search around a lot. On the 5DMKIII, is it possible to shoot RAW video at 720p24 or 720p30 in-camera? I have seen a lot posted about 720p60 and odd aspect ratios but I was wondering if one could use a somewhat slower card and record in 720p30 for the extra DR if 1080p was not needed. Thanks

in ML Raw you can do 1280 x 720 but as Adam said, its a crop of the full frame. You can see it in liveview the frame guides will show the recorded image.

Thanks for your replies. So I guess 1080p is the only real 16:9 option with ML? Everything else is a different aspect ratio which would be a challenge for framing? I don't need 60p but might want 30p instead of 24p. It seems 1080p30 is too much for card speed though.

If you want 720p30 with the full frame, you can shoot 720p60 with 360º shutter (1/60s), then drop half of the frames (works differently in different editors; in Premiere you'd have to load the 60p footage into a 30p timeline and disable the frame blending option)
It does require very fast cards (bitrate: 95 MB/s)
