Hi,

I need a wider fast lens for my GH1. I already have a Canon FD 24mm 1.4, equilevant of ~50mm right?

If I get the Lumix 20mm do I have to take into account the crop factor with that one as well or will I get what Im looking for and the field of view will be significantly wider then my 24mm FD lens on GH1?

Thanks!

Sami

Yes, it's equal to a 40mm lens on a full body frame. Focal Lengths are always constant regardless of sensor size, so you always take the crop factor into consideration.

ok thanks, so hmmm... 40mm vs 48mm. not worth 400 euros for the added field of view.

What wide angles do people use on the GH1?

Kit lens and wait for the 14mm 2.8 to be released soon.

... and the Tokina does't autofocus on the GH1 either, whereas the Lumix 7-14 does. And what Tokina are you talking about, the 11-16? There's a massive difference between 7mm and 11mm! Not even in the same category or on the same planet.

Yeah I pretty much made the same decision. Wish I had the 24mm 1.4 like you, that would have made it even easier for me to skip the 20mm 1.7.

Anyways I have:

PAN Kit lens
FD 50mm 1.4
FD 24mm 2 (maybe down the road sell to get the 1.4)

Plan to get:

FD 85mm 1.8
PAN 14mm 2.8

BUT would skip the pan 14mm 2.8 in a heart beat if a $1500 range 14mm 1.3 came out.

Speaking of the 14mm 2.8, does anyone know price and realease ETA?

The 20mm 1.7 is an amazing lens...I don't use my FDs as much anymore...the thing hardly ever comes off.

+1
I love the sharpness and lowlight of 20mm and I hardly use anything else in low light, but it is more difficult to pull focus without it being manual. I am getting used to it though.

Anyone compared the FD 24mm f/1.4 L to the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7? I've got the FD lens and I love it but it's definitely soft at f/1.4 - I'd still keep it for when I absolutely must go that fast but if the Panasonic was significantly sharper at f/1.7 than the FD is at f/1.4 it might be worthwhile for me, I find my FD 24mm f/1.4 to be best at f/2.8, if the Panny was sharper even at f/2 that might make it worthwhile.

I just use the kit lens as a wide angle. I use a Sigma 24mm f/1.8 as my normal lens and if I want it wider I just back off the subject if the space allows. I also use my 50mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.8 a fair amount and just add distance (not for wide angle obviously, but I'm not always happy with the DOF I get out of the 24mm...sometimes it's a little too deep for one-shots.)

I'm curious about this as well.

So Ben what did you do with your Pana 20mm 1.7? Or was it borrowed?

Before you consider "up"grading from the FD 24/2 to the FD 24/1.4, consider the many extensive tests which all seem to conclude that the 24/2 is streets ahead of the triple priced f1.4 version at all apertures. You already have the best one - no need to spend $100s more on a worse lens...

I also have the 24/2, 35/2, 50/1.4 & 85/1.8 - All great lenses. All 8 blades and all sharp - recommend the 85 for sure!

S.S.C or just general?...I presume the later non breech are SSC anyway?

As for the 20mm pancake vs FD
although I hate that it has a dubious means of manual focus and the overly clinical image it gives it is probably one of the most sharpest fast semi wide lenses around. No FD will match it really..optical technology has advanced.
The beauty of the FD lenses is the organic look they give...rather than full on sharpness. And love the fact theyre tough as nails and a joy to focus with.

In the old FD breech mount, there was only the 24/2.8

The 24/2 and 24/1.4 are both nFD only. All nFD lenses bar one (the 50 1.8) are with SSC, though none mention it.

Sure, that 20mm is a very sharp lens. However, I think a lot of what we perceive as sharpness has more to do with contrast than resolving power, as pretty much proven with HD video that is only 2MP, well below the resolving power limits of even a very poor quality, old, cheapo lens.

Love the Tokina 11-16. It also has the added bonus of being able to work with all cameras but full frame.

If you need a really wide lens then the Lumix 7-14 is the way to go.
