Lost - The Final Season Thread

I tried watching it Wednesday night, I fell asleep halfway through.

I picked up Thursday night where I left off. Again I fell asleep.

I'm not saying it's terrible, but I think my head isn't into this anymore.

I was intrigued for a while, but I'm back to falling asleep mid episode.

No backing out now, I guess.....

This is a no win ending.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's either purgatory, in which case they took the cheapest way out that everyone suspected in the first place. Or only the flash-sideways were them in purgatory, in which case the entire mystery of what the island is was completely unexplained. While there was emotional resolution, and I admit to being moved by some of it, the resolution to the primary compelling mysteries behind the show were completely blown off. Unless they were all dead the whole time, in which case it sucks.

Agreed. It feels like right up to this season it was all about weird time travel physics stuff, and then they did this massive turn into a sort of bland mysticism...was pretty let down, though we did have a cool LOST party complete with thematic foods and Dharma products:

Dharma beer, Mr. Kluck's chicken, mango salad, fish, Apollo Candy bars...

And how come no black people get to go to heaven!

Because the black actors didn't want to return. LOL. (Harold P. said in the Kimmel special, two seconds ago that Michael is still on the island because of what he did. Which makes sense since he said that a few episodes back.)

Yes, the "alt" was something like a purgatory.

The mystery of the island was explained. It was the harbinger of good. That light was the core of all of the good in the world, and if extinguished the good in the world died. That's why it should never be extinguished.

I think that in the end, there could have never been a better way to end this series. People will always be pissed, and others will be mesmerized. It's art...so it's all about interpretation.

My bro totally set his house up like this, and even dropped personalized Oceanic 815 boarding passes for me and my kid. :D

The flash sideways was the place everyone wanted to happen, it was where they all go to remember when they die in the real time...

But the point we meet them, is at the end of the reign of Hurley.... the first person to make it into the flash sideways was Juliet, who died in the explosion, then down the list of who died next, Boone and Sharon and anyone who died on the first trip to the island then came soon after....

Hurley, because he was leader of the island, and couldn't die until he found a replacement, was the last to join them, and thats when they all started meeting each other...

So the flash sideways is everyones dream of what happened if the explosion worked... where 815 didn't crash, but everyone still say each other.

I disagree for this show. It was built around a central mystery, and to not answer that mystery clearly is a failure and a big middle finger to the audience. Why is it the island the harbinger of good? Just because is not an answer...and the island light being the harbinger of good is a stupid idea anyway. Something like The Sopranos having an open end isn't as bothersome because that was a character driven show without an overriding plot...Argh....alright I've spent enough of my life on this show. The finale did have one good line of dialogue "I don't believe in many things, but I do believe in duct tape."

I was pretty satisfied with this ending. Was happy to note that the original timeline was not negated by a reset. Some are reading that the entire island experience was "purgatory" for Jack to be tested but I don't see that. The finale seemed very clear on that point to me -- the flash sideways was a "purgatory-like" place for everyone to re-assemble and move on to "whatever's next" together, but that the island timeline was very much real.

A side thought: when Desmond lifted the "cork" everything turned a hellish red. Was that "hell" below, or just the volcanic activity we've heard about on the island?

I have to wonder though that when this series was pitched if the plan was for the island to be a form of "purgatory" (or Jack's "death dream") and as that became a popular theory during season one, they revised it.

I smelled pretty strongly where this was heading mid-way through this last season. I was hoping it was a bit of mis-direction so they could spring something else on us, but no.
