"Location sound 101 - This is how it is"

Ty,

Yes i saw this in test #005 which is boomed from above, the quality improved significantly.
I will read the "letter", thank you for your input.

Always use the headphone output on the fp24 EXCLUSIVELY... if you set up a cable from the MicroTrack LINE-OUT to the TAPE RETURN on the right side of your fp24 then you can just flip the tape return switch to the right to momentarily hear the recording AFTER the MicroTrack... or you can switch it to the LEFT and just monitor what the MicroTrack is recording the entire time... that way you can hear if there's any problem IN THE MICROTRACK (distortion, clipping, etc)

LOL, Gotta love Matt's pictures. Someday maybe he will compile a book.

The Letter is something that doesn't get pushed enough. Not so much for people trying to record sound but to help get the rest of crew in-line for making good sound possilbe (especially the director and producer). I have found it useful to people who are doing their first film but if you try to hand it directly to someone who has even one film under their belt, they get a pissy, "I know what I doing and I find this note condesending" attitude.

At the same time these same people go on to make all the same mistakes that are outlined in it. I have found it works best as a good guideline of what requests you should subtlely slip into conversations with crew members.

And I still can't download any clips. Just get this page...

???

Amen. I sometimes run camera and the sound guys are always surprised by how much I look out for them. It's because I know what they are going through to try to get a decent sound track. It really does take a lot of cooperation from the rest of the crew.

Steve

Still not working for me. Do pop up blockers have to be turned off maybe?

CLICK HERE for Ty Ford's "The Letter".

Gotta give credit where credit is due :)

Sorry about that wabbit... I don't want to take credit from any of those guys. I know at least 4 names off that list pretty well. Mike Westgate is the reason I switched to an AKG ULS system.

Just wanted to make sure people knew who helped make that document happen. That way if anyone in here ever meets any of them you can buy em a beer

Now back to why some of us can't download the files???????

Wabbit, i just PM'd you the link, let me know if its working, the link works fine from here, maybe its a PC thing?

I can't open any of those, probably my machine, but it just ends up at "sorry" page at .mac. Also the thing about having mp3 tests is that they are not the best way to determine good from not so good. Also, most people do not have the greatest speakers or sound card on there internet compy. What I am saying is that it may be hard to determine what is making a recording sound bad when monitoring in a deceiving fashion.

As far as that unbalanced cable goes, I doubt if it is -20. Simply unbalancing a cable does not make it -20. Seems to me that balanced is going to be preferable anyway, if I remember right the Micro Track distorts at +2 unbalanced, but at +4 when balanced.

Maybe something like this Shure A15LA would do the trick. Its a little excessive at 50 db, but I imagine you could compensate at the Micro Track.
this make about 6 db att for what the mt see if you run from the xlrs
no need for 50 db pad to go to mike level , thats stupid to decrease the signal and then go true the mic amplifier stage again
about meter - sorry i forgot its 16 dbu the most and not 18 , so while you looking for -20 , decrease 4db and not 2
the microtrack distort at 2dbv unbalance while the mix pre is start on +8dbv if you run from unbalance tape out - this is your 6 db gap and that why you need at least 6-10 db attenuation .
since we are talking dialog recording and not music which use compressors to stabilize the signal the dynamic range is around 20 db ,
of course you can work and not go over the 12 dbu ( with tape out) and be ok
but that could limit you - and why not to use the whale range the mixer is giving you ?
if you will work that way calibrate the limiters around 10 db

Jon , iam still suggest you make some attenuation on your cables ,20 db if you run balance xlr-pl stereo jacks
or 10 db if you run -10dbv tape out to unbalance pl mono jacks
that would give you normal way of working with your shure while you recorder will be happy for every level that mixer give you without clipping the inputs

Why am I posting this picture? I don't know but here it is...

FP24 setup 3.jpg
matt did trew audio inserted 15 db atunuation in your cable ?

- if yes its good if not -you are probably on the low side of your recorder potentiometer . and probably clip the recorder on peak over 12 dbu

dont know the 671 but -the -20 pad - does it work while you put line in ?

sorry - but 100 $ for 2 attenuators look to me quit expensive when you can do it with 4 or 10 resistors( depend on your output and input
not to mention - you will need these cables for this device only and it wouldn't increase the weight or number of joints in your setup
go to the jay rose site ( i dont have the link , but you can find it easily if you google) and find the attenuation value setup , then go to every electronic shop if you cant solder your self - it wouldn't be more then 30$ for half hour work -
and use balance setup xlrs to stereo jacks
