"Location sound 101 - This is how it is"

Yeah, its not exactly an everyday problem we face.

An example where it IS considered would be at places like football world cup where thay will preamp a mic and send it line level over a LONG distance to OB/control room.

the production im on right now is based at a studio, and im so often tempted to lift one of those mega XLR cable drums. :)

I'm totally comfortable with 100' lengths... I would normally use 2 x 50' to make that... which puts a connector half-way... so I'd have no problems with a hundred footer.

I've been running mic level signals with no problems through a pair of 100' musilux cables that Matt made for me. The mics I use have a fairly strong signal which helps but the quality of the cable is an important factor with length.

thank you for a good thread, joyful reading and good advice. I want to buy the microtrack and a mixer and I was wondering if this -10db pad from m-audio could get rid of the problem between mixer and recorder you dealt with earlier?

I know its only -10 which might not be enough... but have anyone tried it out- maybe it suffices.

thanks again you are helping a lot more people than you think.
