LITTLE VOICE - an Alex Jeffery film from Simple Science Productions

Story: This was SOOOOO refreshing after watching so many people screw one another over. Thank you! Really good writing here. Great character(s).

Acting: Perfect! I had no issues with anything. Your lead was really great.

Technical: This looked fantastic! It was also really smooth. Loved the camera moves early in. My only gripe was the kitchen scene. It just looked way out of place.
Everything else was spot on. It sounded really great and I loved the score.

Really great film making here! The story was compelling and the acting was smooth as silk. Your shot choices worked very well through most of the film and the audio was crystal clear. The only thing I would have liked is a little tiny bit more color grading to take the video edge off of the footage (just a personal preference though). As I work my way down the viewing list, this one heads up top.

My critique for Little Voice
The story:
Excellent! It had a beginning, a middle, and an end. Very complete all throughout.

The acting:
The lead actor and the actress did great. Could completely feel their character.

The camerawork:
Camerawork was very proper - professional, and the colors were nicely saturated.

The editing:
Editing was very smooth. Loved how it transitioned from each plot point.

The sound and music:
Dialogue was crisp clear and music was very professional. The sound here helped the story a alot - even if I turned off the picture I could still get what the movie was about. Inspiring sound design.

Overall impression:
Very good. Loved the message and it didn't seem to preachy either. Overall a very good and clean story.

What a great film. You know, truth be told, when I saw where this was going with the conscience, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. But you did it well. You pulled it off. I really liked your film.

Some very nice motivated shooting and lighting. The way you used the backlighting at 1:15ish, the quiet footsteps, the use of the mirror, very nice. Good cinematography I thought. Favourite shot was at 4:30 ish with the blinds. Got yourself a big shadow there but I actually liked that. Very nice.

What you then did with the acoustic track caught my attention because you brought the story home with a sweet touch. I thought that was cool. It could have gone a different way. Great song, by the way. Good subtle score in there too.
Enjoyed the performances a lot. Your actors had a good look to them. Definite potential for great things, I think.

Memorable Moment
5:45-end. That was done really well. Really sweet ending, very honest, good performances by both actors. They did well.

Anyway this was really nice, good work everyone. Congratulations.

It was really charming. It starts with your story, but your actor and even the actress really delivered. Their performances were great and I loved the chemistry between them in the end.

It was a lovely change of pace from all the dark stories out there (mine included).

Very well done. One of my favorites.
 
wow... what a refresh... like others... it's so nice to watch this film after watching so many killings... so it's basically he betrays his own betrayal... interesting ... but I like it, I really like it! I like everything... the kitchen scene didn't bother me much... lines feel forced a few times but wasn't a big deal as the other guy wasn't real anyway ..lol.. but I don't know, this is the winner for me!!!
 
Ahh, betrayal. Thank you for externalizing the internal conflict – too many shorts like this just show us the main actor agonizing, making funny faces, and we’re supposed to infer what he’s going through. By externalizing it through his conscious, you give the audience something to grab onto. I agree, it was nice to see a betrayal entry where they didn't end up screwed.


That said, the story itself seemed a little bland. Guy wants to cheat. Has a chat with his conscious, guy decides not to cheat. Next time it would be nice you could add your own personal spin on this tale. Technically, I thought it was solid, well lit, and nice camera moves. A minor point, the colouring in the kitchen scene seemed off.

[FONT=&quot]I liked the ending with the cologne, it was sweet. I think it could have been tightened up a little but, but overall it was a nice way to end this. I absolutely love the house you used for the setting. Congrats on getting a film in, and tahnks for putting this up. [/FONT]
 
People keep saying, "refreshing" and that's exactly what this was. It was a simple story that was well crafted, well shot and well acted. A very cute and sweet story. The girlfriend seemed so sweet, innocent and oblivious and that to me made the story all the more powerful. I really liked the lighting. The kitchen thing didn't really stand out to me like it did for others. Nice, solid and professional job!
 
Wow Alex! This was a terrific short! Your lead was FANTASTIC! Only thing that I didn't like was the lighting in the kitchen scene, but that's easily corrected.

Excellent short. So far the first 10 I've rated! :)

Your lead was engaging – I particularly liked the charm he brought to his conscience character (although I have to say it immediately jumped out at me how much he sounded like a certain Tyler Durden). The more comic moments really helped reel me in – his alter ego makes this character (who is technically the same, after all) likable.

Nice story. Simple, direct, to the point. Nice match for the time allotted.

If I had a major critique, it would be the lighting, which I really didn't care for at all. The film looked very flat and uninteresting, and then suddenly it looked very purple! There seemed to be no real motivation behind any of the lighting and it really distracted from the storytelling to me. I wish you had kept it simpler and found ways to develop depth in the visuals. The flashback sequences did this – I just wish the whole film had been more like that.

Regardless, well done and congrats on a solid entry!
 
This is another best. Your best so far. It seems like I've been saying that to a lot of people...a testament to this fest. I had to look again and make sure this was Alex Jeffery. WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT. This was a charming short. Your lead was perfect. Kara was sweet as Tupelo Honey. The only problem I had was: you KNOW he's going to screw it up later and see Rachel...

I really loved this and now want to see more from you...great job.
 
I really enjoyed this. Some great humor with the lead actor. Enjoyed the story, and some great lines.

One of the tops.

Really good film, your lead did a great job, only thing I can think of is that I'm not sure I liked or trusted him at the end, sure he made the right decision in the moment, but how'd he get to that point in the first place, is their relationship bad and we didn't see it, or is he just one selfish d-bag, in the context of this short I suppose that doesn't really matter but that's just where my mind went. But really good job here!
 
Okay, I'm only about halfway through the films, but so far this is by far the BEST ONE.

Damn, loved it. So much.

Your actor was fantastic. Loved the way he gave both parts such different qualities. The double take with the glasses was hilarious.

Great writing. Love both of them talking to her from downstairs, so cleverly done.

If I had to offer a critique at all, it's that the lighting on him at the bottom of the stairs is a little harsh, and the lighting in the kitchen a little fake. But honestly, who cares man, this film was such a feel good, funny, delectable treat.

First film I've wanted to show to my wife.

Very cool film. Loved the pan from the mirror at the bottom of the stairs. Liked the the lead and his wife was very good. I'm really glad you shot the flashbacks and not just talked about the old times. I do kind of agree with one of the earlier posts about the guy being a d bag. He's made to seem like he's made the honorable decision, but then he's telling his wife that he "wanted to smell good for her".....I hope he feels guilty about that later....good job man!
 
You made a wonderful film. I was moved.

I would have liked to have seen the lead be a little older. He seemed like a 19 year old, or maybe I'm just getting old myself. hahaha His performance was great.

Holy crap.

I can't believe I almost rated this one what I initially did. I must have watched it too late that first night of viewing and just zoned out. So glad I watched it again. And the girl did a great job in a very limited time on-screen.

The story was ideal for this length short. It doesn't try to do too much, just a very important slice of this guy's life. Perfectly paced.

Outstanding work. Knockout performances by your lead. I loved the intro of the conscience - lighting, delivery, everything. And

The pink lighting in the kitchen was a little strange, but didn't pull me out of it or anything.

I really liked the flashbacks framed with the photos - those were really able to encapsulate their relationship in a few brief seconds, realistically - it wasn't just them sitting around saying "I love you" or any other kind of cinematic shorthand - it really showed who they were together.

The score was also excellent - I loved that it wasn't wall-to-wall music, but rather highlighted important events and emotions without being overbearing.

Technically - lighting, sound, framing - I had absolutely zero problems here. The "double" shots in the kitchen, I didn't even realize how well-done they were the first time I watched. An invisible effect, really, as good as the double shots in "Moon." The zoom when the conscience sits was done in post, I assume?


My top-rated film of the fest.
