GH4 Leeming LUT One – the best LUT for the Panasonic GH4

By the way Mark, here is some of my work you won't find on my personal YT page. Oh, and that is Dexter standing in my Avatar. Ya know, Michael C. Hall. So you can poke at my fair footage all you like.

Nice work Dusty!! I am very impressed by the content and the way you filmed...Can I be an assistant on future shoots like this?
Yeah actually I thought you were a little hard on Paul too, but I liked the way Paul humbly accepted the criticism..so all good.

Slightly off topic...I've noticed that you dont seem to be mentioning your A7s much lately, still using it?...ditto with Erik Naso, even tho he recently seems to talking about the GH4 like its the noisiest camera in the world,
he still appears to be using at least one of his, but not much about the A7s.
Just wondering wether its because using it in normal light is somewhat troublesome cause of the extensive ND needed, and its really best as a low light beast.

Sorry for the OT Paul...I will buy your LUT Next week..
Cheers

It appears that its not the flavor of the month these days...understandable! but I was curious wether the camera is mainly used on low light stuff and a bit of a pain in normal light?

Wasn't trying to be hard. Just being upfront blunt. That is how I am. When Paul first announced a LUT he was working on, he made it seem like a VLOG replacement. My first runs with it (according to his manual) didn't meet that expectation. So I played with it further. Showed examples. Showed that in certain shots the lows in chroma would be susceptible to clipping. I gave feed back and he made his LUT stronger. He did the work. I gave suggestion. He gets the credit. I hope I helped. Now I feel he has made a CineD LUT that is very very useful.

The A7s is a cool camera. I hate S-log 2. HATE HATE HATE. I don't like Sony color one bit. I prefer Canon, Panny, and BMD color. The reason I like the Gh4 is that I like the sensor size. I like the battery life. I would love to see a Gh5 with VLOG and 422 8bit internal with 10bit out.

One is VLOG+ Varicam LUT the other is CineD 16-235 Leeming V5. Zero color corrections on both. Just some very very slight Lift/Gamma/Gain. And I mean SLIGHT.

Alright, I plunked down my $15. Paul, if you can get the newest version out to me for tomorrow, I'll put this sucker through its paces on some charts and challenging skin tones. I'll be looking for pure color accuracy, not what I personally prefer, so I hope you guys didn't muck-up the greens. ;-)

Yeah I always felt that about the A7s, just the color seemed cold or off somehow, and I have heard numerous complaints about S-Log2, I personally think Sony are over reaching really, too many cameras with overheating, battery and RS problems in the sub $5,000 range.
But yeah I am looking forward to getting Pauls LUT, mind you I am getting very good results with V-Log now using no LUT, just using SA Color Finesse in AE and pushing the curves and adding some saturation and a few other adjustments.
I like the GH4 cause of the convenience of it, its soo easy for time lapses and a bunch of stuff.
Keen to see how the final Paul LUT turns out
Cheers

No need for that. We are all giving our opinions, that's why forums exist.

if paul leeming would really understand and respect the nature of information exchange in public forums, he would simple share his insights in a more consequent way.
it doesn't make so much difference if you describe a solution to problem by words or put it into technical form like this LUTs.
but there is big difference between sharing information within a community and just doing public relation work to sell a product.
it's a pity, that panasonic opened pandoras box by selling this stupid upgrade for the first time. but it doesn't get better, if we get used to this kind of stupid business making and just try to participate in it as good as we can.
so i think, we should really ignore this LUT from paul -- not even discous it -- maybe copping it under a differned name and share it for free :)
but, for sure, i would appreciate it, if he would document and share the few technical ingredients of this LUT with us in a more collegial manner, to use and improve it together in a more forum adequate way.

I just hope you won't rely on VLOG-L on your next gig with Dexter.
Fluffing your feathers much? I'm not befuddled honestly and big names are not always a mark of quality. But i respect your work, I just think you could respect other's a bit more right off the bat, be cooperative right away and accept criticism like you expect other people to accept yours.
I read many many posts from Dusty (probably a few hundred) and didn't knew until today that Dexter was on his avatar. He is one of the most valuable ressource here.

?????????? I understand what you are saying in the first part, but the rest of the post is hard to understand exactly what you are saying here...English a second language?
He has a special thread about this LUT...If you want to ignore his LUT, then simply ignore the thread, it makes no sense to post in this exact thread telling us to ignore his LUT when thats why we were reading the thread in the first place.
So I think you are a bit out of sync here and over reacting, there are plenrty of threads here where you can discuss and share, I think Paul has every right to sell it...why not?

Sorry, but I'm going to call you out on this, big time.

First of all, advocating piracy is not cool, especially in the thread of the person whose product you are advocating they pirate.

No one is forcing you to be in this thread, so why dump all over what is essentially a far cheaper way for people to get the same quality as V-Log L, created by a working cinematographer?

Perhaps you should pay a bit of attention to things like my joining date of this forum. Go and visit my website and see who I am. Watch my showreel and movies.

I started the idea of building this LUT in response to the image quality issues plaguing V-Log L on the GH4. You want to talk about sharing information? Go read the Exposing for V-Log L thread. I'm the one who first raised the issue of magenta cyan colour splotching, and of the undocumented bug in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015 with 10 bit 4:2:2 footage behaving like 8 bit footage (with a bug report subsequently filed with Adobe).

Then there's the week of in-depth testing (my cinematographer day rate is US$500 a day, which is cheap itself considering) at all hours of the day, countless iterations to get the colour science perfect, a bunch of additional work last night to get it perfect, and you have the gall to advocate ripping it off?

I charge $15 dude. A McDonald's meal is probably more expensive (at least here in Europe it definitely is)! I have no interest in gouging anyone. I made this LUT for ME first of all, to get the best possible images out of this fantastic little camera. It wouldn't have mattered if I didn't sell a single copy. But I think there is some value in what I took a week to create.

So to you I say - follow your own advice. Ignore this LUT and thread. Build your own if it makes you feel better. Give your work away for free.

But don't come into someone else's house and **** on the carpet, and tell me I should appreciate it.

My credentials are out there for all to see. My name is on the LUT because I stand behind what I say. That's me in my avatar, in a former life.

Who the hell are you to come in here and spout crap behind a veil of anonymity, and think you can call a spade a f$%king shovel?

Get out, and don't come back. We won't miss you!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Wow...just wow. Any professional shooter is an intellectual property creator. To suggest stealing someone else's property is, well, so much worse than a little self-promotion.

Knowing how much work goes into creating an *ACCURATE* LUT (any idiot can make a goofy film look) I am very appreciative of the work Paul has done. I was going to do the same...may still if his doesn't pan out...but if it does, then that will have saved me at a minimum a week of work, maybe more. $15 is NOTHING.

Hell, technically Paul hijacked my thread ... but I don't care. He's been actively working on a solution while I've been doing other stuff. More power to him!

Please just ignore this thread, you don't need to tell others how to respond to it.

Paul, how can we order the LUT?
Also, did you do some side by side test with Natural (no LUT of course) and cineD (with your LUT)?

The forum mods made me remove direct links to order it (their house, their rules), but you can visit my website to find the droids you are looking for ;)

Cheers,

Paul :)

I haven't tested all the profiles, just the ones I used myself (Portrait used to be my go-to for skin tones until I built my LUT).

My aim was the V-Log L target, as everyone (myself included) was initially excited to finally have a colour correct profile, only to find out later about the chroma issues.

Cheers,

Paul :)
