LEAKED: CANON EOS M50, 4k

"we had to use the scratch audio track from the 5D MKIII, which had the output from the DR40 ran into it. The difference between the two was so huge and so glaring in comparison, it almost ruined the project"
Not the best test since these types of recorders focus more on inputs than outputs.
Though I don't agree with recording into a dslr via an active beachtek (no camera monitor/output on many Canons-T6i in example), I have been (due to client's gear) surprised by the end quality when used in interviews.

The audio with DSLRs/mirrorless' is perfectly fine.

If you have your camera's audio level set to 50 or 12 or 3 or 6dB (or whatever the highest setting is to get a usable signal), it's going to sound terrible. But if you lower the levels, use a preamp and/or sensitive mic, and ideally have proper placement, it is never an issue.

Interesting note from Canon about the omission of 4K DPAF:

"The EOS M50 offers 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but not at the same time. Is there a technical reason for this limitation?

With the EOS 5D Mark IV, we do offer 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, so technically it is feasible. But given the position of the M50 in the lineup, we can’t include all of the features available in a product like the 5D IV. Given the position of the product, we wanted to achieve the optimal balance [of features] in a camera in that range. We’ve optimized the M50 as best we can [for its market position], and within those parameters, the combination of 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus was not possible."

At least they are confirming their position, which no doubt applies to everything else (cameras).

However, this was also said as well:

"Does this pressure generate better ideas? More innovation?

Very much so, and it goes both ways. For all players, to be stimulated by increased competition allows us to level-up across the board."

No doubt the limitation has mostly to do with the amount of DIGIC chips the camera has. I'm pretty sure the 5D series have 2, as well as a larger heat sink. That being said, they have yet to prove they can be competitive with Sony in terms of video and codecs, as nice as the MJPEG looks I'm sure everyone would prefer really good H264.

No. It purely has to do with camera positioning from a price point, marketing point of view. They clearly have indicated this with the operative word "positioning". I have never seeen such a bald faced acknowledgement of this. In layman's terms they have crippled it in order to correspond to the market segment.

I also read their reply as "we could, but we won't, not at this price".

There's no way in hell that I would take a normal long GOP h.264 codec over the intra frame .mjpeg.

If you're talking about a high bitrate intra frame h.264, well that's something else. Of course, that would still be around 400 Mbps (which is still better than 520 Mbps). But I think there's a disconnect where people think a 100 Mbps long GOP h.264 would be just as good as 520 Mbps intra frame .mjpeg.
