7D Just pulled the trigger!

Hi All.

I just bought my 7D this afternoon and I'm very excited. They had an amazing
deal at Future Shop and I couldn't resist.

All the terrific posts here really helped me feel confident about my decision.
I know there's a lot of support, which I suspect I'll need.

The camera came with the kit lens 18-135, but I'm planning on purchasing the
Canon 50mm 1.4 as my first prime. This lens has had great reviews both here
and elsewhere, both for portraiture and as a great lens for video.

I shoot mostly documentaries, and some green screen work so any
recommendations on my first lens purchase would be welcome. The 50mm seems
like a good everyday lens, which is what I need for now.

Look forward to our future discussions.

Best.

Peter

Very early impressions are good.

I shot a few minutes around the house and imported them into Premiere Pro. Used the
DVCPROHD 1080 24p preset. I'll have to check if there are any 7D presets available (like
they have for the EX1). Had to render the clips before playing them, but they played very
smoothly afterward.

YouTube has some great tutorials on the basics. Found it simply by searching "7D Tutorial".

If it's CS4 just have 4.2 update installed and use an AVCHD preset.

If you want RT performance, try the Edius Neo 2.5 demo and you'll be hooked with smooth as silk full frame editing native files.

I'm interested to know as well.

I currently use CS3, but realize I'm probably going to have to upgrade to CS4.
Edius Neo 2.5 looks good, but I don't think I'm ready to switch NLEs. I been
working with Premiere for too long.

For those using CS3, would you agree the DVCPROHD 1080 24p preset was a
good choice?

CS 5 will be out in about a couple weeks, Has several DSLR presets in it.

DVC100 is easy to edit with but you do lose some resolution because of the squeeze.
I've been using AVC intra 1920x1080 but I'd like to hear from someone else about whats best for resolution AND/or workflow.

Haha, I've been meaning to pick up a 50mm 1.4 - just haven't had the time. We've talked about it over the last couple years via PM. We really should just get together and collab on a cool project.

Get the 50 for a good price?

$380 new-in-the-box with UV filter and lens hood. The seller had bought it for himself in February, but never used it.

First shot with my nifty-fifty. Sweet. Love the shallow DOF

Well. Experienced my first disappointment with the 7D - It does not have a build-in
intervalometer. You need a separate ($200) remote.

I was shocked to be honest. I'd researched the 7D to death, read what I thought
was every thread and watched hours of Vimeo video. Never noticed. I just assumed that
"Here's a time lapse I did with my 7D" meant the 7D had an intervalometer.

Ah well, that will teach me to make assumptions.

Still loving the camera of course, just thought I'd mention it to any potential purchasers
out there. I will be buying the remote timer in the next week or so, just as soon as I
have an extra $200 :)

Found an inexpensive alternative to the Canon remote timer. The PHOTTIX® NIKOS Digital Timer Remote sells for $80 new here in Canada. A lot cheaper than $259.00

Seems to do everything the Canon does. I'd be interested to know if anyone has had experience with this product.
