Just got a new camera - Sony F35

A lever at the rear of the camera has broken off, and an internal part has loosened and is sliding around inside. It was very well packaged, but my guess is the damage either happened as a result of a particularly big fall or during some kind of border inspection.

This sucks! Did you have insurance or do you have to pay for the repairs from your own pocket?

The package was insured, so I'm in the middle of a claim process right now. I really hope they acknowledge the responsibility for the damage...

It was FedEx, luckily. They have a separate office here in Scandinavia, so I don't have to keep phoning all the way over to the states. They've been very helpful so far, but you never know.

Have F3 here also. (paid SLOG version). I am going to do some tests/comparisons--hopefully this weekend. For some shock-factor, might include Epic as well. :furious3:
Should be interesting!

I own all three, so it will be about as subjective as it gets. Know someone with C300, so may throw that it the mix also, if possible.
No famous ASC's here, no sponsors, no loyalties. It is, what it is.

Terrific, can't wait to hear the results. I don't think anyone's directly compared SLOGged F3 to the F35, only Hypergamma'd.

Yep. In Hypergamma the F35 should easily win. The S-log definitely brings something interesting to the table.

LeavingTheCandy, make it happen. ;)

I'm curious to see a comparison between the Black Magic Camera vs the Sony F35 - the big Sur clip is pretty damn impressive https://vimeo.com/58045466

Of course it's CMOS, jello, crap and you'll need a metabones speed booster thingy . but it does have a unique different color palette and the sharpness is a little different. Just really curious on that. And it's only 3k-5k pretty much to get it going vs around 15k to get the f35 up to speed.

Miguel I love your stuff man, you can make anything look good but you caused me 5 hours of lost sleep over this already. :) I need to stop buying cameras and learn how to frame things and light things well.

Apples and oranges. Totally.

No camera is apples and oranges, really.
All are cameras.

All record images.

All can be used to film things.

Also, apples and oranges should be compared. They are both fruits. They both are juicy. Some people love apples. Some people hate them.

I agree that it would be very interesting to see a comparison between the F35 and BMCC, if only for the fun of it. I've seen a lot of amazing footage from that little box. The ergonomics are not for me, though.

Anyone wanna come to my place with a BMC too? We'll throw that into the mix! Setting it up now...hope to do some testing over the weekend.
As anxious as I am to do this, it is Friday and there is only a finite number of happy hours in man's life!

Really? They are all cameras? So let's compare a Panaflex to a Hasselblad then.

But I know what you're thinking. Even though you said they are all cameras and record images, you really meant moving images. Fair enough. So let's compare an IMAX camera to a Pancam. Or maybe an Alexa to a CCTV camera. Or even a Canon 5D to an infrared camera.

Sorry, I just can't agree.

Come on--let's all feel some Friday afternoon love. They will ALL kick ass and will have pretty pictures that will excite fan-boys of all genres!

Anyone wanna chime in with a few tests that I should so to make it worthwhile? I'm planning on doing a table-top with products, colors, details (ala Abel and Zacuto) then will do some real-life tests of skin tones with both daylight and tungsten. (from what I can ascertain, F35/CCD likes 3200 and F3/RED like 5600K).

Not gonna bother with rolling shutter, etc. as we know what each will do.

Ok, my suggestions would be:

  • Sharpness and resolution test, with charts and also real life shooting wide panoramic shots.

  • Dynamic range test, with charts and also real life test under harsh sunlight with lots of shadows and skin also present. Some snow shots with a person in a black shirt or dark skinned person would also be challenging.

  • Artifacts test with charts and also real world fine patterns and other structures that could provoke moire, aliasing, stair-stepping etc.

  • Low light test shot in a real street at night with available light from light posts etc. Not a controlled studio situation.

  • Highlight clipping test on different materials and surfaces to check how nicely highlights roll off from skin, metal, glass etc.

  • Which camera has the best ergonomics and is the easiest to work with?

  • Which camera needs the least amount of add-ons to fit into a real production pipeline?

I guess this would be enough for you to start. ;)

Thanks for taking the time LeavingTheCandy .
