Just got a new camera - Sony F35

To the OP, Macgregor, do you agree that the Sony 9000PL is the same IQ at the F35? Does it have the same Genesis Technology?
Also, where has the Sony 9000PL been selling for that low a price?

"(the 9000PL).. bargain considering it's pretty much the very same camera as the F35 (same sensor and electronics), just stuffed in a self-contained shoulder mount broadcast style body, and a PL mount."

"Sony 9000PL is also going for a bargain. I saw some for around $9-10k."

9000PL image should be identical. From what I remember from when I was still covering production news, Sony told me the 9000PL was actually a far more popular camera than the F35 because the form-factor made it better suited to TV production. The sensor and mount is the same.

I think they didnt sell many 9000pl, there were more 9000s but the ones without the s35mm sensor. And while very interesting i havent seen any for sale.
I also wonder whats smaller and lighter, the f35 body or the 9000pl carrying a hd am deck you wont use.

So that f65 sold for 40 grand...

It may have been popularity for rentals, I can't quite remember.

$40k for a virtually new F65? ...the camera market is a strange and unpredictable place at he moment.

I've been shooting all week with the F35. Wonderfull footage as usual.
I shot with a hyperdeck and a Gemini.
The hyperdeck mini BNC conector broke again (2nd unit that it happens, it's just weak). Sad because it's such a good product.
The Gemini seems to lose some quality, even when it records uncompressed DPX. Strange. It fills SSDs like crazy, and takes long to download, so I'm not fully sure I want one yet.

Yes, this is a weakness of the Shuttle. My first one broke also. Now I'm just really careful with it. I'm thinking about putting it in some sort of cage where the connector couldn't be touched and leave the small and thin cable connected full time. Only disconnect on the camera side.

Beaides a built in lcd and nds how is the f3 easier to shootthan a f35 recording to a hyperdck?
Actually what i like about the f35 is how simple it is to use. No menus. Just a lightmeter and done.

Sorry, just saw this reply.

Well, can you even monitor audio with the F35? It's a camera that expects you to record double system really.
Also, what about the fan noise? I know the camera shuts the fun off to run silent while rolling if the SR1 Deck is attached. But without the deck, as far as I know you can only set the fan to run at minimum and it's still pretty loud for sound recording in quite interiors.
The thing is the system was designed to be treated like a Panavision or Arricam 35mm camera, not a camcorder. It definitely dictates a different way to work.

I assume macgregor uses a light meter to expose due to the camera output being very flat LogC? Any way around this other than just increasing the contrast on the EVF?

You can apply LUTs to the monitor outputs. That way you can record S-log but see a "normal" picture on your monitor. It's easier to miscalculate that way though, so it might be just as well to just keep the signal clean.
You may also choose to shoot hypergammas like on the F3. The DR and gradeability would of course take a hit, but it's useful if you have a tight deadline.

You can preview the signal with a LUT applied (in the EVF or any monitor you want to connect to the 2 monitor outputs that the camera has), or set the zebras to 38IRE for an accurate mid grey reading.
Or use hypergammas if you don't want to grade the footage afterwards. But the more I shot in SLog with this camera the more I get surprised about how much room there is when grading it. It feels like film

What about the fan? Can you turn it off if you are not using the SRW1?

And am I correct that there's no headphone monitoring in the camera?

Wow you have created some real interest here, good work. Can you please tell me, are you recording any audio straight from the camera to your deck, or does audio need to be recorded externally and matched up in post? I guess the you could use the Samurai as another recording option? I am also really interested to hear you say you wouldn't be using it for paid work, only personal projects, why would this be? Best wishes Sparky

About the fan, yes there are a few settings you can choose. Yes they work without the SRW1.
Now, I've shot in small interiors and never had an issue with the fan being too loud. It's not like the fan in the red one. It's actually very quiet.

No headphone jack in the camera. This is a digital film camera. That's like asking if your brand new Porsche 911 turbo S includes a net in the trunck for your dog... XD

Mmmm, it's not really my work. This camera blew me away when I was a proud owner of several Red Ones. The F35 was just superb, but completely out of my price range. Now it isn't, but still produces the same beautiful footage.
About audio, I always record audio separately, even when shooting on a 5D. So this really does not affect my workflow.
With the Hyperdeck you can actually record audio but there is a big BUT. The camera will output 16 audio channels at 24bit. And the hyperdeck will record that. Even if you were just using a mono microphone. What's the problem with this? 16 channels of uncompressed 24bit audio takes a lot of hard drive space. I think it even takes more space more than the video signal itself. So not worth it for me. Maybe with the pix240 this is different and easier.

Thanks for taking the time out to clarify a few things for me. Have seen a used one now I am interested in, and I had no interest at all until I read about your experiences! Could I just use my Samurai as you are using your hyperdeck, taking the output from the SDI socket?

Yes, absolutely, samurai should work, just be carefull when shooting slog in prores.
I have one of my f35 for sale at a bargain price btw
