FS7: It's a heavy beast !!!

It would not seem sensible for panasonic to base their system around Ef or Emount, being owned by thier main rivals (watch the firmware lock out new lenses!)

It should be a short focus mount, Kinfinity do it with the offest PL (expensive) or MFT is 'open source' , or of course they could launch a Pmount - being a well designed short flange mount.

Id enable an MFT crop mode personally.

I just don’t understand how incorporating a very basic lens mount like red or arri could be all that expensive, and then let 3rd companies sort out the obscure lens mount adapters. UNLESS it is just a way to keep the EVA away from PL glass.

F*** me, this thread went batsh*t crazy.

Indeed it did. Let's get back to mocking Millenials for crying that the Sony Fs7 is a "heavy beast". :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Rachel Morrison puts them to shame...

and what would Rocky think of all this winging?

Wow thanks JPNola, such a welcoming community amongst us we have....it was simply an observation in my experience with the kit that was in front of me at the time. By the way, I'm 45, so long past millennial stage....and for all of those who are having a go at me because they think i don't know what I'm talking about - far from it, it's simply a change in form factor that I was looking at.
Someone did mention the BP-U battery - yes, that's a good option for either FS7 or Z280 - and Jupio makes one with a D Tap on it, which would be ideal to power something like a Ninja V.

Anyways, I think after much consideration (short of seeing it in person this week), I'll be aiming for a Z280.

I think this could be a wise choice - and mature one - not a millenial one.

Owning EX1 and FS7 I cannot stress how much more hassle a 'built' fs7 is to use.

toughen up slackers.

As the marketeer of the lightest (4k10bitXLR ?) S35 camera this is an odd postition to apparently think is cool.

Time to drop the macho era maybe?

I love light cameras - because they bring more shots to the party - overheads, low angles, small jibs, gimbals. These shots take serious grip to produce with larger camera systems.
Yep on the shoulder a bit of inertia (not mass) is good - no problems - strap on a Vlock to your small camera.

Maybe it would have been better to say that you'd rather not use a camera as heavy as the fully built Fs7 on long shoots, rather than say the Fs7 isn't suited to long shoots.

For the sort of work you do, as much as I can glean from your signature, the Z280 is likely a good fit for you.

I hope you haven't found your experience here too bruising - often the spirit of things gets lost in the text and well-meant humour can be misinterpreted.

A few of us FS7 owner-ops expressed interest in the 280 when it was first announced. I think it ticks all sorts of boxes - but only an A/B comparison will tell how it challenges the FS7 image - or not.

Please report back when you've used it and assessed the images. The S35 space has pleased and frustrated many of us in equal measures, and this thread is testimony to that.

The 280 looks particularly interesting to me because it tantalises us with the notion of a tried and tested codec, decent DR, long and constant 2.8 lens, possibly game-changing AF (ie some of us might actually be tempted to start using it) and a lightweight self-contained form for agile film-making. I may still buy one. If it can deliver the pics, this camera might possibly mark a shift away from S35 cams, back to handycam PD100-style blobs.

I've found it an interesting thread. Surely it's not that crazy, Liam? :-) I'm grateful it's at least not being hogged by a lone pedantic troll - something we've endured on and off over the past few years.

Ben.

Hi Ben...look to be honest, it was a bit confronting, and i'll preface this post by saying I purchased a GH5s last Friday (it was the end of our tax year, so everyone buys up big to reduce tax bills - good excuse !). Having the GH4 and moving the GH5s was a natural progression due to having lenses, etc already.

It will be my A Camera for the time being, and ideal for beauty/B-roll/BTS stuff. What I looked at the FS7ii (and FS5ii) for was to keep the filmic/cinematic look going - although admittedly it's not as vitally important when doing vox pops / red carpets - moreso for corporates (hence the GH5s, and soon a Ronin).

What I'm hoping (and it's now been pushed to next Monday) is to get footage from the Z280 that still has some semblance of a softer than video/newscasting look (I know that's not as achievable with the sensors) so that it's not stark. I would be primarily shoot in 25p (the Aussie equivalent to 30p NTSC). I don't shoot for TV/news.

When I test the Z280 next week I'll take some footage and post it here - because there's next to nothing online right now except for the official Sony stuff !

Think Mitch was just being funny Sam, give the guy a break, he's one of the good ones.

And anyway, what's the world come to if you can't mock millennials? :-)

I hate millennials...and hipsters. :D Mitch’s posted pic brings up an interesting point: it isn’t just about the weight of the rig, it’s the distribution of that weight. The big film mag in the rear balances the rig nicely. For us FS7 operators we need some big brick batteries to do the job.

I don’t mind having 35lbs of camera on my shoulder, I just don’t want 25 of those pounds supported just by my right hand. Camera Comfort Cushion helps tremendously regardless of shoulder mount kit being there or not. I don’t get to use an Easyrig yet.

So, balance is key. After that the heavyness of the beast only helps achieve smoother shots.

"Time to drop the macho era maybe?"

Good point, Morgan.

However, I think some lose sight of the benefit of weight in a camera.

NOTE: I edited my own post because, well, some of it just wasn't necessary or productive.

He is indeed a good one.. and also I guess a way to get Panny do do a short flange EVA.

While he fails to acknowledge that that is a good idea, we will have to happily disagree with no hard feelings.

As for macho - well Im fooked after another day of Fs7ing around a school (and scenic locations and halls of residence and home boarding) - very pretty pictures though :)

To me the OP made a valid point - for solo opping I feel a built FS7 and reasonable selection of lenses is a little much.
The simplicity of the EX1 (and modern versions) completely trounces it.
Also for gimbal use or small jib use the FS7 is just a little much.
IMO
