But as Renee (is that at least YOUR real name?!) stated, this is the most professional forum around for this profession. You really should visit a different forum (check out 4chan for a complete eye molestation) to appreciate what the rules and mods do here.

Haha! It's funny- I totally disagree on being forced to use real names on the internet, but I choose to use my real name. :]

But I'm not just talking about 4Chan-
Even if there are pros on other boards, they stay quiet and get lost in a sea of incessant questions.
DVXuser was impressive to me from my first visit because it felt like a conversation between many knowledgeable people, all in one place.

I think also that the forum has changed a bit in character - and cliqueishness - because it's grown wider and wider in scope. That is... in the beginning... it was DVXUser, and most folks were, umm, DVX users. Then along came the HVX, then other cameras started sneaking in... and suddenly we had a lot of subgroups that were a little partial to one camera or another. Then of course groups that were fanatical about cameras that were announced, long before they shipped, etc.... so, for better or worse, DVXUser now has built-in a little more fragmentation and competitiveness. Many folks think (and for some reason seem to need to think) that their camera/audio gear/approach is the best, and become evangelical about it... and blindly dismiss other people's needs and concerns.

But I still think that DVXUser is a lot more focused, helpful, and useful than most forums (my cliquishness on a greater scale)... and there are many "old pros" that remain active and extremely helpful here.

Originally the "price" of entrance to DVXuser was owning a DVX100, and given the cost was a few thousand dollars, it kept the median age higher (few high schoolers could afford the cost).
DVXuser as it was known is dead, and due to the affordability and number of options presently available, it is fast becoming just one of many forums about video. This thread is a perfect example of one that would never have appeared a few years ago, there was no need. Members had the maturity to understand that arguing and bitching were part of the whole package, and took whatever was said with a grain of salt. Today, the median age of members has dropped well below where it was, and the maturity level has also dropped. Before, admittance was the cost of a DVX100, let's say $2500.00, today under $500.00 will buy you an HD camera of some form to shoot with. To simply be blunt, questions from a fifteen year old "cinematographer" are obvious to look at, and the inability of the new[er] members to search instead of feeling the right to ask questions that have been answered many many before will always get tiring to anyone who has been here for any length of time. The members here now range from squeaky new, to established shooters with many projects under their belt, but it's the new members who need to understand that it's realistic to conclude that whatever their question... it's been answered many times before, by many people, and to ask the same things over and over will get you lets say... less than gracious answers.
When I started, you watched and listened to the experienced people and learned from the bottom up, and were given additions to your workload as you learned more. You got help along the way of course, but to ask the most basic of questions without busting your butt to figure it out first was a sure way to be tossed. Today, everyone wants the answers without doing the work first themselves, over and over if necessary. They also want to be handled gently with nothing but positive re-enforcement and encouragement... what happens when there's no one around to help them out in the real world? Work on any shoot and ask the director or cinematographer questions because you didn't learn the basics... go ahead, ask. The number of people asking for example "is my T2i too light to use on a Glidecam and how much weight should I add" has been answered be me alone probably over ten times already, but they keep asking instead of doing a simple search...
The median age here is probably well below 20 years now, there are now probably over 20 moderators now (a sure sign of the changes), and the "lifers" that were once very active here before now just pop in occasionally, not necessarily due to other activities keeping them away, but ....
DVXuser is gone, it was a great place attracting people enthusiastic about filmmaking shooting at 24, but the dilution of the new cameras supported is having an effect that has turned these forums into something quite.... beige.
The questions being asked have pretty much all been answered before, many times, but they keep being asked, with the demands of only answer me in a positive, supportive, sensitive way or my feelings will be hurt because you're being so mean and you'll destroy my self esteem and I'll never be successful and it will all be your fault I was never famous.
The original post contained the following "I spend more time here looking over posts than I do Facebook". Facebook... there's what is really wanted it seems, how many "friends" do I have? No offence.

So will mine say "Senior Member" underneath my name (pending I do, in fact, beat you around DMT)?

If your real name ain't Hawk Teflon, then I don't wanna know nothin' from nothin'. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

It's a geographical thing.
Speaking of geography, I can't speak for the LA folks, but is all this internet nonsense of late due to the fact that we're all cooped up with cabin fever? It's like 20 degrees here in CT. This sucks. I can't wait for spring!

If it's this cold here, zaza must be trapped in ice right now.

Actually, even though it will be furiously denied, the biggest "clique" here are the Mods.
There are names that many of us have never seen becoming Mods.
Mods should be voted on before getting the "magic powers" bestowed upon them, by all members. Respect is earned isn't it?

Creative Cow had a really well worded post once. It said if someone asks what you determine to be a basic question, just don't answer it if you are going to say that it is basic. Look for ways to engage at that edges of your knowledge, what you are experimenting with. Years ago at a film / industry event I found myself telling the same old stories and saying the same old things. People I conversed with seemed to be listening. When I decided to just talk about things I have been considering recently, things that were current, I had more productive conversations. What do you want to know now? What do you want to contribute to a conversation now? If you don't want to contribute, someone who just figured out the answer to what someone is asking will crop up and post. Probably. Unless their day job is selling equipment. In that case those people just want to sell you something.

I have a feeling I know which forum you're talking about, and yeah, it's night and day. User is the best place for this on the web, period.

Pookie bitching about DVXuser is predictable, tedious, tired, redundant... and, in this post, I think somewhat accurate. There is not a doubt in my mind that the massive influx of new users has chased away many of the veterans, and the warlike attitude that many of the new users have exhibited sure hasn't helped anything.

Actually, even though it will be furiously denied, the biggest "clique" here are the Mods.

Ah, and here's the part where Pookie loses all credibility and just reignites the same "***** at the moderators" attitude that he always resorts to.

Look -- this is a big site. It takes a lot of people to try to keep the ship at least pointed in the right direction. You want to see DVXuser implode entirely? Watch what happens if the mods didn't do everything they possibly can to keep this place the unquestionably best filmmaking forum still on the web. Is it what it was? No. Is it still the best there is? Hell yes.

If you don't like the way things are going, I see you have two choices: pitch in and help, or get off the boat. Guttersniping about the mods is one thing that won't help and a sure way to get yourself shown to the exit. Again. Threat? Of course not. It's just simple logic -- you can go out of your way to make our job easier, or you can go out of your way to make our job harder. Sometimes you choose the latter -- and when you do that, you make yourself unwelcome. Solution is simple -- don't do that.

im seriously interested/curious, for those who are completely against having their real name displayed. what is your reason? and don't give a snide brush off like "it's no one's business what my name is"

seriously, put your reasons down, because i honestly can't think of any positive reasons why someone posting in a technical forum would want their name hidden. so help me understand your reasons, whether or not i agree with them, i'd appreciate hearing them.

cheerios

That had nothing to do with what I was talking about but you certainly have the right to think that but I disagree.

In the social sciences, the word "clique" is used to describe a group of 2 to 12 (averaging 5 or 6) “persons who interact with each other more regularly and intensely than others in the same setting.

In social context, a clique is usually something that is frowned upon when discussing divisions within a peer group. Are the teachers at a high-school a clique of the student body? No. Are the employees at a best buy a clique among customers? No. Are the bartenders at your favorite bar a clique among patrons? no. The mods, despite being active contributing members, have a higher responsibility than that of a normal member. They must work together and interact frequently behind the scenes to keep this place from turning into one giant youtube comments section; full of negativity and unproductive spam. So yes, they do interact with each other quite a bit. They keep the gears spinning. A clique? More like a staff.

Voting? Are you planning to run for Mayor of DVXuser Town?

Barry, interesting, you ***** about me, then agree....

"Pookie bitching about DVXuser is predictable, tedious, tired, redundant... and, in this post, I think somewhat accurate. What's the problem then?

As far as your comment "Ah, and here's the part where Pookie loses all credibility and just reignites the same "***** at the moderators" attitude that he always resorts to.". You're a bit too late, I already called that one... "Actually, even though it will be furiously denied, the biggest "clique" here are the Mods."

Barry, I contribute quite here quite nicely thanks (not counting the Cafe) "I see you have two choices: pitch in and help, or get off the boat", a quick search will have shown you that.

Barry, you probably have the most "street cred" of anyone on these forums, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're automatically right.

btw, If you'd like to get into an in depth discussion of Steadicam hardware, aesthetics and techniques, don't hesitate to get in touch...

I dont mean so sound rude or unappreciative of this forum. because I have learned alot from this forum and the people on it. ......

.....but its a real downer when you come here and see negativity all the time and in some ways discouraged not to ask.. ......

Terry

Agreed. I'm guilty and regret it when I have been less than helpful. There is no excuse for being rude on a professional forum.

But what I don't want to have happen is that the moderators over-moderate to the point that the place loses its character. People have to be allowed to be themselves a bit. Its a difficult balance between allowing people to let some of their character show and over-moderating to the point that no one wants to participate. You've probably been to forums that have over-moderated and people go away.

We should allow our character show through, but still be respectful and professional no matter how many times someone asks the same question. Yes, we should search. Yes, we should ask intelligent, well written questions. But if we don't, there is no need to be rude. If we don't like the question or discussion, we can ignore it.

If there are cliques here, I don't notice nor care. I've learned a lot and will continue to learn and share.

Pookie what I meant by spending more time here on facebook has nothing to do with how many friends.... you KEEP missing the point... My point there was I spend a great deal of time here searching and reading and watching videos of others.. to LEARN and then learn some more.. I find this forum very interesting and informative, helpful. AS we all know alot of people spend their days on facebook... that is a fact.. I tend to spend most of my searching and reading here.. that is a compliment. So say I ask a question about something that I am doing and it MAYBE has been asked before.. I might be looking for a more personal answer/help to what I am looking for help or advice on.. not everyone has the same equipment or setup so there are no one size fits all search function.. ..

i dont have an issue with my real name being on a public forum.. Im still trying to get my picture to show under my name..

and reading back. I look at the "CLICK" statement and i realize that will happen everywhere.. but what I was really trying to get at are some seem to have "big heads" .. well deserved? maybe, but sometimes shows through at the wrong times. alot of you as I said before I STILL look up to as to your knowledge and what you have been able to achieve.. but sometimes people come off a little snobbish here when a newb asks a question... ......

ok back to those jackets.. LOL
