is this place getting clicky?

I change my mind. I'm not interested in getting into it with the cafe crew.

To see an example of this just look at the thread about being encouraged and how some want to discourage anyone from doing anything ever. In their mind, all the people doing "art" today should be the last ones to ever do it. So when they die, no one will do anything artistic again. So look no further than that thread to see the attitude of others around here. If you aren't like them then move along and don't expect any help from them.

Um, I think you missed the entirety of the point of that thread. Entirely.

The line of thinking is that people who are talented should be encouraged to get better, while those who are not talented should be encouraged to do something else.

It's what happens in real life. Just trying to bring a little IRL to the internet experience. :)

C'mon, all we need here is song for all us DVXUSERS! A catchy little tune that gets us all on the same page!

Well I didn't think there were cliques here on 'User, but if there is, I am going to come out and say those who join me will be in the cool, but rebellious clique. That means we are going to skip sections and smoke some cigs behind the Cafe. We'll occasionally brawl in the cinematography section and the chicks will dig us. I'll also give cool gang nicknames, and maybe embroidered jackets. The mods will respect us, the women will love us and the emoticons will fear us.

Eat lunch at the cool table.

... wait... what is this thread about?

^ hahaha. But you'll still have to wear it on the outside or go without pants. Members need to be visually identified as members. Also, in a very web-oriented twist, the cool kids will also be nerdy. First order of business is to point out that the word is "cliquey" not 'clicky'.

Use a spell checker for god sake if you want to be taken even slightly seriously, and learn punctuation.

The basics don't even rate anymore, but everyone wants to be "important".

Sorry n1c02, but filmmaking is an industry, if you can't form sentences correctly (you may scoff) how are you going to write a proposal or a budget?

In general, it's good to pay attention to the form of your writing, simply because it's easier to parse and easier to get your point across. Even on forums. That said, we'll always make mistakes in these informal posts, such as below:

I agree wholeheartedly, but if the basics cannot be accomplished, no matter where, how many [other] shortcuts are, and will be taken?

Our friend wants only encouraging, meaningful comments made to questions posted, but meaningful to who?

Every answer teaches you something, even if you don't like it... at least that's the way I was taught...

If you can't handle and learn from mistakes and criticism, I guess the only career left is politics....

In one of the sentences above: "Our friend wants only encouraging, meaningful comments made to questions posted, but meaningful to who?" the grammatically correct form would be "but meaningful to whom?", because "who" is a subjective pronoun (as is "whoever"), and in this case you want an objective case - "whom". For a full explanation, see.

In any case, there certainly is an iron rule, that when you submit material in a professional setting, spelling, grammar and generally form, really should be perfect, because it is part of how you are evaluated. But in informal settings, such as this, the rules are somewhat more relaxed, and our aim should be not to be perfect, but to get our meaning across. We all make mistakes - and here, spelling mistakes are forgivable.

As to cliques, it's just a social phenomenon among humans, and it's inevitable. If you don't belong to a given social strata or group, no big deal, stand proudly apart. Don't worry about tone. Worry about content. I prefer a rude helpful person than a polite unhelpful one. Sometimes rude can even be entertaining - but maybe my skin is too thick. What I don't enjoy though, is unhelpful - whether rude or polite. But you can't demand anything from others. Ask your question, and await answers. Be grateful for the helpful ones, and thank them profusely. Ignore the rest, because you can't change them, no matter how much you complain - you can't get blood from a stone.

Getting clicky...... (it's clique btw)......

No, it's cliquey, BTW, or more commonly, cliquish. We are talking adjectives here, right?

Good god man, at least get your harsh retorts right!

And French? Really??? What's that a sign of?

Especially in French- Deja Vu, Cliquish... what's next... Merci???

C'est la vie...

one step towards decliquing.... forced real names in the forums. won't solve the problem outright but many do behave themselves better when their actual name is attached to their words

I haven't seen a rise of any kind of cliques on the forum, lately. As a participant here for a while, I really have to say that, for the most part, the discussions here have been pretty civilized for quit a while. I am not going to drop names, but there used to be some folks around here that really got some things riled up. There is not so much of that anymore.

What I have seen lately is what I quoted from ian, and how that has relates to some pretty profound changes to the video camera market in the last few years. It used to be that video camera changes were phased in at a much slower pace, and were centered on the "Usual Suspects" camera companies. That has changed drastically in the past few years. It does seem that the discussion of these changes can be, on occasion, not as civil as they should be. A lot of these discussions come to be dominated by fanboys types, or paper spec devotees. I have to be honest, that sh*t drives me crazy.

I agree completely.

Real names.....LOL

C'mon guys, if I say my real name is John Smith, how do you know it is....or isn't?

Real names on forums...... meaningless.

I think also that the forum has changed a bit in character - and cliqueishness - because it's grown wider and wider in scope. That is... in the beginning... it was DVXUser, and most folks were, umm, DVX users. Then along came the HVX, then other cameras started sneaking in... and suddenly we had a lot of subgroups that were a little partial to one camera or another. Then of course groups that were fanatical about cameras that were announced, long before they shipped, etc.... so, for better or worse, DVXUser now has built-in a little more fragmentation and competitiveness. Many folks think (and for some reason seem to need to think) that their camera/audio gear/approach is the best, and become evangelical about it... and blindly dismiss other people's needs and concerns.

But I still think that DVXUser is a lot more focused, helpful, and useful than most forums (my cliquishness on a greater scale)... and there are many "old pros" that remain active and extremely helpful here.

(As to grammar, I think the OP needs to understand that one's presentation and attention to detail are extremely important, and carry over from one aspect of life to another. Putting time and effort into making sure your posts are clear, understandable, and pleasant to read will make people more likely to take you seriously and be helpful. In the rest of life, it will help you in being taken seriously. Arguing with people who take the time to advise you here that your presentation is getting in the way of your getting help shows that you're not really open to help unless it's exactly what you want to hear. And the most helpful advice is rarely what you want to hear. Start working on your grammar, and other little details, and your filmmaking process and interactions will improve as well. Tell anyone that "details like that don't matter" and they'll wonder what other details you're not willing to spend effort on.)

Agreed.

Listen, one thing has stood out to me about this forum every time I'm here.
For the most part- you guys are actual professionals.
The level of skill and knowledge may vary from user to user, but it's not like other forums I've been on.
The ratio of noob to professional here is very good. Most other parts of the internet it's the blind leading the blind. Everyone is confused and bad advice abounds.

There's lots of real advice on these boards, even if it's given with some attitude attached.

Wait. These aren't your real names?! Pookie? Doc? ullanta? Say it ain't so!

While I do agree that a real names forum has it's plusses and minuses, I also know it won't fix the problem. BUT it will get us going in the right direction. Though that implies we're going the wrong way. Hmmm... Not quite the point I was trying to make.

In all honesty, it seems like the cliques kinda (or "kind of") come and go. It's a cycle. We're just coming back around to it. It'll fade, then come back. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

But as Renee (is that at least YOUR real name?!) stated, this is the most professional forum around for this profession. You really should visit a different forum (check out 4chan for a complete eye molestation) to appreciate what the rules and mods do here.

Full circle: Are there cliques? Yep. Just like school, work, church, and life. It just happens. I never really let any of that get in my way, though. Just talk who you want to.

I also think that attitudes depend on where people are from. If you ask advice from people in the north, often they're blunt and to the point. You ask someone in the south and they'll sugar coat it and possibly skirt around the answer to not offend you. It's a geographical thing.
