Is Class 4 enough for T3i video?

The instruction manual says to use class 6 or higher. Now I surely think it's possible to use a good class 4 and be good, But honestly using faster cards will leave less room for error and will transfer files quicker to your computer.

Nothing wrong with saving money, but using the wrong piece of gear could actually cost you money (ie. lost/corrupted footage)

I found a good price on class 4 32gb cards. Trying to stock up. Are they enough?

Pulp, the best way to put this issue to rest is buy one of these class 4 cards and let us all know how well it performs. Experience is the best teacher.

I'd really rather not waste my money, or risk having an inferior piece around when I might need it. That's why I asked.

By the way, is that Gary Owens? They released a few of their dinosaur shows on DVD recently, I picked it up. Very nostalgic.

I bought 2 class 10 PNYs after reading this thread and they're both junk.
man. thats sooo weird. ive had half a dozen class10 pny cards and not a single one ever gave me a hint of problem...

if i were doing mission critical stuff (like events, where you cant "do-over") id stick with sandisk. i cant recall hearing a single complaint out of them.

one kind of strange thing to keep in mind. people do carry magnetic / electrical energy and some PEOPLE just fry gear.
like my dad cant wear a watch. every one he buys dies in a few months. and i have a friend who cant keep a computer running. every one he owns malfunctions for no apparent reason.

im sure this is no comfort to you. just wanted to throw it out there as a possible variable... : (

I doubt that's the issue. I took photos with it, it was just too slow for video.

I wouldn't bother- they might work fine but then you'll be still losing time transferring later. Invest a few extra dollars on class 6's or 10's- make your life productive.

hasn't this been explained & beaten to death? It's all lies, a C6 A is not the same speed as a C6 B. This is why the GH1/2-hackers use Sandisk & Panasonic Gold only, cus these are actually delivering promised writing speeds. So? Buy Sandisk & make your life easier.

There is sooooo many other things to save money on. Don't cheat. (And, there is a LOT of pirated cards on ebay... do buy from serious retailers. Don't say i didnt warn ya).

Class 4 is not enough. The 550D T2I outputs about 5.89MB per second. Class 4 around 4MB per second, so you would get a lot of buffering on a class 4.

A Class 6 however would to able to JUST handle the video footage from your dslr.
However, if you're using Magic Lantern, you might want to output an even higher bitrate so in that case, a Class 6 would not be enough.

So the best bet is obviously to get a Class 10 card to give you enough headroom for your recording purposes.

I so far have used Class 6, and haven't done much video shooting with my 550D/T2i. However, over the past few days I had "recording automatically stopped" on one occasion shooting 720p 60fps. I definitely wouldn't risk Class 4. I'm now lookiing for a reasonably priced Class 10. I'm aware (and your experience with the PNY suggests this): not all cards are created equally, and also a lot of "brand" SD cards are faked, and sold on sites like ebay.
