Is Class 4 enough for T3i video?

this is going to sound mean. but im an old guy from the days when a 30 min tape was $50 and a 16gig p2 card was $1000.
memory cards are CHEAP. if you cant afford to put the the extra $20-$30 into class 10 cards, you should probably be thinking more about your paper route or lawn mowing gigs than buying camera gear...

...Yup, that definitely makes you sound like a mean old guy.

The point isn't "afford." The point is "why throw it away if you don't have to?"

Why spend twice as much as opposed to having twice as much media? I'm sure when you were shooting on those $50 tapes, you would have preferred to of had 2 rather than 1 for your money.

$30 is lunch. when it come to my recording media, i'd just prefer to have the performance headroom - rather i absolutely needed it or not.

I'm glad you're doing so well. Not everyone is. Please keep that in mind, and keep the rude comments to yourself.

Whoa, slow your roll there, pulp. I don't believe anybody was being rude, nobody is attacking you and wgzn was just making a point that in the grand sceme of things, Class 10 cards are pretty cheap. And for the headaches that a class 4 can and will bring you, it's not worth skimping on. For ONLY $10 more than the class 4, you can order a class 10. If $10 is going to make or break you, maybe this isn't the business for you. Good, professional necessary gear is not cheap. And once you find out that $32 class 4 isn't working out for you, then you have to go out and buy the $42-$50 card, thus meaning you just spent over $75.

I use the Transcend cards, they have served me well. There are faster cards out there, but I have never once had any buffering issues.

Maybe you mistook me here, Kit. I found this rude:

you should probably be thinking more about your paper route or lawn mowing gigs than buying camera gear...

We're all adults, and without treating eachother as such, a community like this, a forum, serves no real purpose.

I ask about the Class 4s because I got a few for Christmas. So, if they worked better, they'd be much easier for me than repurchasing the same cards in a higher class rating. Shame.

Damn, wgzn, if you think $30 is lunch, then I'd love to have you at my bar, any time. Nevertheless, I agree with your point. The difference in price is negligible, when balanced against the difference in performance. It'd be silly to get anything less than Class 10.

Oh, didn't see that. Even still, it could gave been put more nicely, but you can't complain about "a few bucks" (literally) if you're serious about this business. "Welcome to the big show, duh nuh nuh, duh nuh nuh"

^^ lol that made me laugh..

@Pulp - in all seriousness I can understand you looking at the cost. Are you doing this as a hobby or something? Are you intending to shoot less than a minute clips? If so, then maybe class 4 would suffice.

In all honesty the aggravation that will come with having a class 4 card isnt worth it to me. I wouldnt want to shoot if I kept having buffering issues as well as it taking forever to copy onto a computer. ESPECIALLY trying to copy 32gb (if you fill it up)

So I take it $30 may be a bit steep. Try this.. Keep the class 4's that you got for christmas and work on shooting, settings, etc while you figure out a way to get $30 to get the better cards. That way you would have at least learned something while waiting to get the cards that will most definitely be better for you.

Hope that helps you out man.. GL :)

I think what wgzn was trying to say in a rather un-tactful fashion was that when the difference in price is so small, it's usually better to error on the side of quality when your footage depends on it. Just like back in the DVX100 days, it never really hurt to get better brand of mini-DV tapes. Why risk inferiority it when the price is so negligable?

I'm poor too but it's about spending money smartly. The old adage, "penn-wise, dollar-poor." You've already spent a big amount on the camera and lenses. Why handicap yourself over a few bucks?

Let's keep the conversation civil. No reason for a crack like that.

Also, the idiom is Penny wise, pound foolish.
