Is 3D a passing fad, again?

I don't think 3D tv even has enough penetration to be called a Fad. Sadly I think Theatre 3D is not going anywhere anytime soon, it needs something to differentiate it from the home experience, it needs to be an event worth going out for.

That said I'd consider Passive screen 3D sets, as they are not much more than a comparable size standard set, the glass are cheap, free if you swipe them from the movies (real-D glasses work, I checked.) Main reason is that I have kids and every friggin kids movie is being released in 3D, add up all the 3d surcharges an there is another ticket right there. At home a bag of Reddenbachers is 50 cents, movie snacks are close to $10 a head. It wouldn't take long to pay for that new tv, and not have the excuse of having to go to the theatre to see 3d.

All in I can't see 3D at home ever really taking off for general viewing, unless they come up with a viable no glasses system. Moat people just have too much other stuff going on to be able to just sit there with 3D glasses on, accept for maybe watching a movie.

i've been holding a knife to 3D's throat ever since it came out, threatening to kill its children if it doesn't get the hell out of my viewing experience

3D is just a fad and will always be a fad. I knew it was going as soon as it came out "again". Physically your brain will never get used to it, or process it without discomfort and problems. Please go away FASTER.

When I was a teen we had some shows in 3D and it seems generations earlier have had their 3D time also. It's like they say "Hey, we have a new generation to rip of some money from, let's do it again"

At Expo in Shanghai last year the queue to see the Seimans glasses free 3D TV display went around the block. More than about 45 degrees off centre the 3D fx faded out, but it was an early set and there was huge public interest in it.

IMO 3D won't go away it's still in the experimental stage, same as when stereo audio first appeared, everything was panned hard left and right, no soundstage.

Networks here are shooting some sports progs in 3D. All the film/TV majors are worried about their competition getting ahead.

Cheers.

According to research by The Diffusion Group new HDTV buyers want internet connections, not 3D.

Yep. No matter how badly the industry wants it, needs it, demands it, they keep running into an impenatrable barrier: the consumers don't want it. And won't pay for it.

This doesn't mean that the industry won't continue to push for it; they will. But just like leading a horse to water, they can't make consumers pay for it.

With Super Hi-Vision (8K), stereoscopic 3D may not be necessary to get the "pop" effect.

8K looks simply amazing, the image appears 3D without glasses!

Ah...You're all a bunch of lame curmudgeons. I love 3D and always have. I even dig the look of color through polarized glasses.
Have no idea if it will ultimately catch-on or not but I dig it.

Avatar sucked though.

Yeah, give it a couple of years and when they have TV sets that have 3D which don't require glasses, I think people will jump on board. The current 3D offerings are ok. I purchased a Sony 3D TV last year around this time and the only reason I purchased it was because it was the same price as the non-3D version and the glasses came free with it. It also came with Alice in Wonderland, which I partially watched, showed a couple people, then I think that is the last time I watched anything in 3D! Haha, it's fairly useless for me. But it would be pretty cool to have 3D without glasses. Some better content would be good too.
