iPhone

My provider Verizon, which has the best network...

I've been a Verizon customer for years, since everybody I know in STL is Verizon my bill can be nearly HALF of what it used to be... but... I just got back from a 5 week gig in OKC... where Verizon pays "usage fees" to US CELLULAR because Verizon has no towers in OKC. Since I'm still on a national free plan they said to ignore the roam indicator on the phone and act like I'm at home in STL.

5 weeks... ZERO dropped calls. Here in STL... 3-5 dropped calls PER DAY. I want to throw a brick through my TV everytime I see the "most reliable network" ads from Verizon... I say "can you hear me now" constantly also... but it's because a lot of the time they can't.

About the iPhone... yes... very cool. I'll probably never get one... or it will be quite a while before I'd consider it... but c'mon... it's clearly ULTRA-cool. I'm sure it's not 100% free of bugs, but as a lifetime PC guy... you gotta' admit Apple is pretty darn innovative... and the fit 'n finish (plus operation) of Apple stuff is SO good... Those are some clever perfectionists over there.

Jack, According to Apple to run on the 3g network the iPhone would have been slightly bigger and had less battery life. They decided that going with the edge and wi fi was a better solution. So far, I'm very happy, but so far I've been on wi fi 90% of the time. :)

I appreciate people not liking AT&T, but I've had their service for the last 3 years and can count the number of dropped calls I've had on one hand. I've personally got very little to complain about.

Regarding typing I've had zero learning curve. The virtual keyboard works great.

Hey look, I was looking to get one myself, and yes matt, they DEFINITELY have done WONDERFUL things with the interface.

I'm an Apple Fanboy. I have 3, soon to be 4 Macs.

Its just that with the non-user replaceable battery like an ipod, only one carrier, and only 8 GB of memory, I'll probably wait for version 2.0 myself.

I think it's pretty cool for a V1.0, and god bless you early adopters for shaking out the bugs. :) I'll be looking forward to a 3G version with 32GB of memory, so I can retire my iPod and surf without cursing.

Mod hat on: Please don't post iPhone (Wii, PS3, etc) ads in the Marketplace. That stuff is more appropriate to craigslist and eBay. Thx.

Personally, I don't understand the hoopla. I can appreciate the convenience of having a web browser and an iPOD on my phone but still, in the end, its a phone. Until they build more towers or figure out how to make a phone that NEVER drops calls, I just don't see the need to upgrade. I feel like I am totally missing the point.

My girlfriend just HAD to have a new slick thin phone (and her last phone was fantastic...had the rubber bumpers on the side, great screen, great usability, etc.) I just do not understand the phone craze. Please somebody help me. Make sense of it. Cell phone upgrading is the one branch of gear lust I can't for the life of me comprehend.

And, don't even get me started on those Nextel Walkie Talkie phones. Why in GODS name do I want to hear YOUR conversation? Just because it has a cool submarine sounding beep?

Add to that, why do I want to have so much function in a phone? The more you are pulling it out to use it the more likely you are to drop it. And dropping an iPOD and breaking it is WAY worse than a phone. You can get a phone replaced and the numbers switched over...but the countless minutes or sometimes hours you spent uploading the songs are lost.

Having said that...yes I agree its cool looking and very sexy. But hows that thar phone feature on it, heh?

I got an LG VX8600 back in January (the flip version of the chocolate) and I had it for exactly 7 days. They were out of lids at 7/11, so my large coffee was just sitting open in the cupholder.

I was driving really aggressively in to work that morning. I had my new phone (piano black gloss and chrome... slick as snot) sitting on top of my center seat devider thing in my truck... lots of fast lane changes and locking up the brakes as I tried to arrive on time.

It wasn't until I drank my coffee down to the exact height of my phone (on end) that I discovered my own bad luck... when my brand new phone hit me on the lip.

To answer the phone upgrade point... this thing was cheap for my "new every two" Verizon deal... but ever since then I've been using my now 2.5 years old phone, because to get another one would cost me $200+

I wouldn't trust myself with the iPhone... but it sure is lusty.

Got one last night...i went to the apple store aroung 9ish and the line had just ended and i was able to just walk in and grab one.

This phone is really cool...especialy if your a gadget guy.

Now i can get rid of my falling apart treo and sell off my video ipod.

I can do anything an I phone can on my Treo.... 2 years ago? whats the big deal?

it does have a nice screen though. :)

Opera mini sucks compared to just using internet explorer on my blackjack.
Yeah everything fits on the screen but it is stupid slow and has to ask for permission to connect to each new page. I would much rather scroll around the full size pages.

So opera mini + blackjack is not even as good as blackjack by itself, let alone iphone.

Jack you can do that. its in the Internet explorer options. there is 3 viewing options. column, full and Default. Default is the "express" version of the site, Column is one long columnm with everyhting smushed into 340 pixels wide, and full is teh full page that you scroll around on.

Like most mac products... you're paying for form and function.

That was my point about the LG chocolate flip... there are really only a few different categories of cell phones based on function and features, yet there are probably a hundred different choices.

I don't think it would be too hard to choose 2 other cell phones that do the same things and ask what's so special about the higher priced of the two.

The hype is in the ELEGANCE of the operation and form of the unit. In the same way you can look at comparison of cars, women, or just about anything... the two choices may yield the same result but the one who elicits the most emotion wins.

The thing is just plain cool... anybody that doesn't think so should get the Motorola SG-2007 (the SG stands for sour grapes). What's so painful about saying "wow your phone is a lot cooler then my phone"...?

Of course there will be people gloating about their iPhone when the next thing comes along... and then I'll say the same thing to the iPhone owners.

To paraphrase Moore's Law... there will be something twice as cool at half the price within 2 years... jumping onboard on the first day of a release means that all these great friends are helping to pay for my iDevice that will come out next year or the year after.

I say welcome the new baby into the world... if you have the cash then welcome it with open arms... if not then just welcome it... I don't know why there always has to be a long line of "doctors" wanting to get a slap in on somebody else's baby.

your mostly right...

iphones visual voice mail is pretty rad.

video is an obvious thing as well...my treo plays video too...but it really isn't that great looking and is sort of a pain to get it onto the phone.

its actually smaller in a way...its much thinner and doesn't feel like i have a brick in my back pocket like my treo.

great screen

i think in general a lot of the things are not totally revolutionary...its just that they are put together so well and feel refined in a way...its slick, cool, modern, consolidated.

Besides, who doesnt like to get a new shiny gadget to play with. Thats whats kinda cool as well...it makes using your cell phone fun.

but either way...my treo is literally falling apart...its split down the middle and is almost like a clam shell now and the antenna keeps popping off...i needed a new phone.

its like anything...i think this thing works for some and not others...

i personally want as few object in my pockets as possible...so this consolidates my ipod and cell phone...

maybe the next iphone will let me do away with my home/car keys.

if it had a 30gig HDD or Flash drive it would be really revolutionary. but i would still haveo carry it and my 60 gig ipod around. i was really disappointed by its 8 gig capacity.

The cool factor is definintly there, but im not one for cool factor. i only like things that are pure function.

I didn't get an iPhone (yet), but I just stepped into 2007 with a new Mac Pro setup. It's only a Duo Core 2.66/4GB RAM/250GB HD/20" cinema display - (eventually, I'll get a 23" HD cinema display).

Next step... $700 to upgrade from FCP 4.5 to FC Studio 2.

Thought about an HVX, but decided to shift priority to editing. I'll limp along with my DVX for a few more months.

It's pretty cool how I can't go to any of my favorite forums without seeing like six iPhone threads.

Apple Wins.

Oh, and I got one... got home and realized that I don't ever leave the computer anyway. So I sold it for retail last night.

Zeiss glass is better than iPhone!
