Inception

I just watched Memento again today.
They both end really similarely, that one and Inception.

They both have really obsessed protagonists who in the end walk away from their obsession.
I'm guessing that's probably defining Nolan as a writer/director, but I need to watch Inception, The Prestige and Following a few more times.

So he keeps making the same movie over and over again ,..somebody should wake him up !

I'm not convinced that Leonard (Memento) simply walks away from his obsession. Don't forget, he reached that exact moment before but still managed to convince himself that the 'real John G' was out there. As Teddy pointed out.

You might be right but it's very open ended in my mind. He's falsified 'Facts' before.

After seeing Inception for a second time, I didn't like it nearly as much... I personally felt there was no "emotional center" to the movie, and I felt completely disconnected from all of the characters... my theory on the ending remained the same, and I "felt" nothing while watching... I think the film has a great plot but in the end what matters most (the characters) are very lacking...

Ahhh, didn't remember the chemist saying that. Although the calculations for Cobb and his wife are still correct since they didn't seem to be using any sedatives (or at least, they didn't say they did).

I felt the opposite after my second viewing.

Meh, it's impossible to say what's correct, because they didn't specify what kind of sedative, if any, they used.

The 5 minutes=1 hour was in reference to the sedative they used to put Cobb and Ellen Page's character under, but who knows if that was the same for Cobb and his wife?

EDIT: I second feeling the opposite as Brandon after re-watching.

I guess I'm the minority....

I also saw almost no change in Cobb... did he "let go" of his guilt? Sure... but I felt like he needed a stronger change than that... the ending left me with no happiness for him... I didn't care what happened to him..

I thought about this after my viewing as well, but then I thought, maybe that's the point we are supposed to wonder about his feelings. I don't think the actions of the film warrant him being rid of his guilt, but his overwhelming desire to see his kids. I think he's just as broken as he was in the beginning, and, the fact he spent so much time in dreams, his reality is totally messed up! :)

HUGE SPOILER

I don't think it was supposed to be a happy ending. I don't think that's possible considering what he has gone through.

As a parent, I felt for him. He just wanted to be with his kids.
BTW, His reaction when his wife jumps off the ledge... fantastic!

Great moment there.

I totally agree! But again, my emotions were attached to him and Mal being together...

I think a MUCH BETTER ending would have been him staying with Mal, even if that meant staying in a dream state, and being ok with it. Remember the only reason Mal was "bad" was because of his own subconscious guilt. Had he released that guilt he might have been able to stay with her, and be happy again... the void of her being gone will never be filled, and I guess that's what I missed.

That is how I felt after my first viewing of the film.

It was in the middle of the giant snow battle that had nothing to do with dreams and looked like it could have been ripped straight out of James Bond film that I realized that I didn't care about anything the characters were doing.

No way he would have been happy without his kids.

But, you're taking to a guy who thinks almost the whole thing was a dream so...

I play video games (obviously from the short film I posted here last week) so when the snow scene came up, all I could think of was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It was like STRAIGHT out of the game.

I think the same thing... which makes my point of not caring even stronger... I don't know... it just didn't work for me on any kind of emotional level... maybe because I'm only 25?

Well, I still think that up to the chemists place the info we received was real. That sets up the fact that he wants to get back to his kids and that his wife is dead. Right before he takes the drugs and goes under we learn more, what we take from that is up to us. I'm betting what he did to his wife is real.

That's enough for me to feel for this guy.

But the Cobb / Mal storyline is really just a minor subplot in the 2.5 hour action film that is Inception.

Most of the action on the screen had nothing to do with Cobb sorting out his issues with Mal, and surprisingly little of the action played around with the idea that they were inside of dreams.

Ultimately, the film didn't make me care about their mission at all, and that's bad considering how that is what most of the movie is about.

I disagree. I wouldn't call it minor at all. In fact, there really isn't a hell of a lot of action until the last act and then it is thrown at you all at once it seems.

Yet the storyline with Mal is constant. Personally, I was far more interested in that. Although the action scenes were pretty amazing to watch.

I've only seen it once though. I may feel different after subsequent viewings.

How can you say the storyline about Cobb / Mal is minor? I found it to be THE major issue of the story, and their mission was just something that was happening on top of it.

Almost EVERY aspect of the film dealt with Cobb and his manifestation of Mal ruining EVERYTHING he tries to do. It was there from the beginning of the film to the very end. In fact, the end of the movie deals with them as well, and his motivations. Inception comes from his experience. Their world and Mal dominate the story in my opinion. I'd say it was pretty major to me.

Because in terms of screen-time, the Cobb / Mal story probably takes up 30 minutes of the 148 minute movie, if not less. As important as the relationship is to Cobb's character, it is only the B-Story of the film.

If more of the film had been about Cobb / Mal, I probably would have enjoyed it more, but as is, the film is overloaded with action scenes and characters and goings-on to which there is zero emotional connection.
