5600 fix - results are in...

Ok, I just received one of my 500's back from Panasonic after having the 5600k preset recalibrated.

Here's what I did to test...

Since I have 2-500s, and both cameras were displaying the exact same 5600k preset results, I first shot a few seconds of a street outside our studio using the original 5600k preset from the camera that was not sent in.

I then shot the same scene using the camera that was just recalibrated. The conditions were bright sunny day at 11:30 a.m. CTS.

After shooting the scene from the recalibrated camera, I then performed a manual WB and it balanced at exactly 5.6, so the conditions could not have been better.

Here are the results right out of the camera - no adjustments:

Good to see the fix. How long did they have you camera and did they say what they changed? Just curious did the the camera with the fix have different setting. The before looks sharper.

The camera was only out about a week, and no, I have not yet talked with Jan yet, so I'm not sure what all they did. And as for the same settings, the cameras were both setup the same, I think its just the way the frame was exported out of PPro that makes the one look a bit blurred. It looked as sharp as the other from the timeline.

thanks for this, I made a good WB at B setting but I going to to do this fix as well.
Living in the caribbean and wondering if they pay the shipping.

Did you have a look at the 3200 preset to see if they had to change that to bring the 5600 in line?

Just curious if the preset 5600 looked different from the manual white balance at 5600.

Hope you're right about the export from FCP and the sharpness. After is pretty blurred.
Color looks better though.

davhud,
I didn't look at the 3200 setting. As for the blurred shot, it very well could have been me. All I did was stick the camera out the front door and fire off a couple seconds from each camera. It may be a bit out of focus. I'll reinspect once I get back in the office on Monday.

The preset 5600 and the manual white balance 5600 were identical.

This was obviously a pretty down and dirty test, but from what I'm seeing, I think it's fixed.

You're doing us a great service having 2 500s so we can compare before and after. Thanks.
I just hope they didn't have to mess something else up to fix it.
It's not that I don't trust them its just that the bottom line is the bottom line. They don't want to spend anymore money than they have to. I don't blame them.

Well, I have a 2-day outdoor shoot coming up on the 19th & 20th of April, and I'll be using both cameras, so I guess we'll find out then if anything is amiss. I will obviously be doing more testing between now and then, but that is the next outdoor work that we have.

Hey Brad
Just wondering if you had a chance to check out the sharpness issue on the after shot. No pressure I know you're busy.
TIA

Ok, I went back and looked at the "after" footage and the softness was due to camera movement. I only had a couple of seconds and I couldn't find anything that matched so I reshot the "after fix" this morning.

The original was shot at about 11:30 AM where this one was done at 9:15 AM, so the lighting doesn't quite match, but I think that in terms of sharpness, they look pretty consistent.

See results above...

Say Brad I forgot to ask did you take the camera in or did they pay to have shipped to a facility.

Hi Davhud,
Since I was a "test balloon" of sorts, they picked up the shipping. I'm not sure how they will handle that once the fix is released to the masses.

When finally comes because the fix? We turn in four weeks, and we can not use the manual wb. We use two cameras and can only use the same setting.

You will probably not hear much from Panny until after NAB. I know they worked very hard to get me taken care of before rushing out the door to Vegas.

However, if you are at NAB, you can probably track down Jan and ask some questions.

I just finished a 2-day outdoor shoot and can confirm that the 56k fix was successful. The footage is dead-on, and we shot 2 cameras using the 56k preset.

Now that NAB has come and gone. Spring is blending seamlessly into summer and all is right with the world. Birds chirp, bees buzz. Plenty of new cameras to keep us busy with techno lust, the rising sap of every hearty DP.
But what of our loves of yesteryear? Where have they gone? Once, not so long ago, the HPX 500 was our darling but now no love for her is to be had. She sits forlornly indoors afraid to go outside. She fears the snickering gaffer who knows her faults only to well. A little 1/4 blue for you my dear he whispers in passing. Even the PA's turn away with a shake of the head and downcast eyes.
In her solitude she can only wonder. Why oh maker have you forsaken me? I who was only born serve. When will I be made whole and returned to grace?
Let me not go the way of the flightless one whose name cannot be mentioned.
I may be neither fish nor fowl but surely there is a place for me in thy great chain of being.
And so she sits and wonders and waits. And waits And waits...
