iMac 27"

Does anyone here have the fairly new 27 inch iMac?

I demo'd one today and it was sweet, the screen is amazing. The Apple guy said I could run PC programs and Apple programs at the same time, he suggested buying a second monitor for the PC programs to run on and use the iMac 27" monitor for the Apple programs.

Anyone have one or experience with this? I have been a PC guy my whole life.

Thanks!

You shouldn't have one. Buy it and send it to me immediately. My workstation is so much more set up for it than yours.

PC programs on a MAC????????? He should be crucified on the spot for such wanton sacrilege. And you can tell him I said so. The traitor.

Heh? What's wrong with me wanting to run the thousands of dollars I have spent on PC software on a computer that runs both PC and Apple software at the same time?

I have to buy a Mac, I have no choice, I'm going to keep my PC's but I want it all on one computer for this situation.

But a 27? Nah, you have not worked up to that level yet, like me. Send it to me and I will tell you if it was worth it or not.

Hackintosh, you can run Mac on a PC, so just get a kick ass Octocore set up , and a 30 inch native LCD monitor, and then blow the rest on coke.

I was pretty close to doing that but I have to get a factory Mac from Apple, I get the employee discount (although I don't work there, long story) and the screen's are sweet on the 27" iMac! I couldn't build a PC with a 30" monitor for what I can buy a new 27" iMac for.

I would strongly urge you to wait until you have another couple hundred bucks and go for a MacPro desktop instead. Just a thought...

I'm not going to be editing on it or using it for pro video projects although I could, I have a couple PC Avids, I like it because it's just a screen, mouse and keyboard, no big computer box on the floor. I'm looking at the 3.06 Ghz quad core i7 model. Plenty of power for what I'll be using it for.

It also has the "TI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor delivers up to 4x faster performance than the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M", it's the top of the line 27" iMac. http://www.apple.com/imac/

It won't work for you. Just send it here, and I will advise you how it works out. I will tell you how best to spend your money.

even worse!!!!!!! Total Sacrilege!!!!!!!!! Go out and beat yourself with a rubber hose. Report back to me when you have done so.

I am hereby declaring myself the official unofficial gear tester for DVX. Send me your gear or any gear new to the market and I will give you my opinion of it. I am especially good at evaluating cameras (mmmmm, cameras). The Red has not been evaluated enough, in my opinion. Send one ASAP for my qualified opinion. And the Scarlet, once it comes out (say in 2020 or beyond?) But not holding my breath on THAT one. Better chance of getting a RED to evaluate than a Scarlet in that timeframe. And I have to admit, that chance is slim to none.

if i was going to get an imac, i would definitely go with the 27. it has really nice high resolution display. as far as the graphics processor, a 4670 is more of an entry level card (for a desktop). but it doesn't sound like you need something for heavy duty graphics work anyways, so that shouldn't be a problem.

one of the cool features of the 27 inch (that the smaller display doesn't have) is you can hook up a macbook to the imac to use as a display. for only $200 more than the 21.5, upgrading is worth it.

???? You always have a choice.

If the PC you have is working for everything else you have to do, won't the 3G iPad you just bought fill the void?

...and if you get some special discount and it would be cheaper than building a new PC...what's to choose...just buy it.

thats cause their isn't any iMac that has those specs. The 3.06 27" is a core two duo the i7 quad core 27" iMac is 2.8 ghz.

I have the top of the line 27" i7 which is the 2.8Ghz, and I put in an extra 4GB RAM for a 8GB total, with the standard 1TB HDD (2TB is an option). It is super sweet. I mounted it on an articulated Innovative arm (44" horizontal extension, 28" vertical) so I can swing it anywhere I want it - whether over the table surface I work on, turn it around facing the couch to watch movies, or push it up and away toward the wall to display Enos "77 million paintings" when just chilling. It is blazing fast, absolutely silent, and the screen is gorgeous. Plus, for an Apple it is actually very, very cheap. The exact same screen sold by Dell is like $1200 - and that just for the screen, without computer. It does everything I need: editing, music, photoshop and doesn't even break a sweat. The best computer I've ever had, bar none. Yes, you can run PC applications - though the graphics card is not top of the line, so I'm not sure how it will be with games that come out that will use such cards to the max. The included speakers are surprisingly good, though of course, if you want a total movie or music experience, you'll want to hook it up to external speakers. One limitation is that it has only one FireWire 800 - so if you have many external FW devices, that's a limitation, and you may have to buy one of those FW hubs (I have an 8 hub FW from Nitro AV). The camera and speaker are very good quality, and Skype is amazing on it. I've had it since the end of January, and I'm very happy with it (typing this post on it!).

Each Intel Mac comes with Bootcamp, which creates a partition on the HDD in which you can install Windows. An included install DVD has the necessary drivers. Pretty simple to do.

To boot to it or back to the MacOS, hold the option key down when the Mac starts and select which OS to load.

I don't see anything at Apple that matches these specs.

Your right, a biz partner works for apple, we were talking about the top of the line iMac, I got the 24 and 27 inch models confused. The 27 has the 2.8Ghz quad i7, not the 3.06Ghz that is in the 24 inch. I'll be getting the 27 inch 2.8 ghz. Sorry about that. Tech forms are great, someone always pics up on an error :)

In addition to bootcamp, there is Parallels and VMWare which allow you to run PC apps without getting out of OS X... of course, those have to be purchased, while bootcamp is free.

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

Have you plugged a second monitor into it running PC programs on one screen and Apple programs on the iMac 27 inch screen at the same time?

Yes, I think that is the program that lets you run both PC and Apple software at the same time without having to shut it down and reboot to only one or the other operating system.

Does anyone have experience with Parallels and VMWare?

I haven't done that, but you'd have to use Parallels or VMWare to do that - under bootcamp, you can run either Windows or OSX but not both at the same time, whether on the same screen or separate ones, doesn't make any difference. Basically, both Parallels and VMWare have gotten so good, that your performance is not hurt running PC apps, though I think you'll still notice on more intense ones, games and the like - plus, you really need to add more RAM to run Parallels or VMWare. On the i7 with 8GB RAM (the RAM can be had for under $100 if you don't buy it from Apple - it's easy to install, and you don't void your warranty by using 3rd party RAM), you really should not have any performance hit using Para or VM running your usual apps - of course, if you want 100% performance, bootcamp is the way.
