If Nikon fails...

it's enough if you want to replicate the look of super 8 but not even close to 35mm.

Hey squig, I'm quoting you again. Neither the CineAlta nor the Genesis nor the Viper nor anything else currently can replicate 35mm film. If the D90 has the exposure latitude of 8mm film as you seem to claim I'd reckon that was a selling point, because a $3000 camcorder doesn't!

But if it's an analogy, there were plenty of underground films shot on 8mm e.g. A Polish Vampire in Burbank, and with 8mm alumni like Derek Jarman and Sam Raimi, how can you go wrong?

I know I'm guilding the lily here, and I imagine you're coming at this issue from a more strictly professional level. But for some of us, who are not professional, what the D90 can do is very useful.

First things first: very nice photos on your site. I suppose most are hdr´s and photomatix pro is your friend, right?

I have to take exception to this statement. I don't have a D90 (I've got D300s), but I've also got G1s and a GH1 and I get some very, very good quality images from these cameras....

No doubt, a good photographer is able to shoot excellent pictures with the gh1. The problem is that there are some disadvantages in the gadget itself compared with more professional cameras. I´ve read some user reports and reviews:

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_GH1/index.shtml

Some excerpts:

- there’s only one finger dial
- in low light, the viewfinder can suffer from noise and a slower refresh, and we were also disappointed to lose the live image between frames in a continuous sequence
- From a speed of operation point of view the GH1 cannot quite keep up with current DSLRs
- The frame rates in continuous shooting mode are not exactly the fastest ones we have seen, but then if you shoot sports or wildlife you'd probably not opt for a GH1 anyway.
- At standard JPEG settings the GH1 delivers less dynamic range than its closest competitors from the DSLR department. The Canon 500D and Nikon D5000 - both cameras with a larger APS-C format sensor - produce approximately 0.5 EV and 1.0 EV respectively more highlight range and have a more gentle roll-off.
- the GH1's fairly steep default tone results in a tendency to clip highlights a little earlier than most APS-C sensor DSLRs
- Four Thirds sensor have a slight dynamic range disadvantage to start with
- Battery life worse than most entry-level DSLRs (330 CIPA standard)
- Still fairly limited choice of lenses and accessories
- poor color accuracy and white balance, and more image noise than we'd like
And here you can find a direct comparison between the 2 units (take a look at the picture quality with different iso values, especially above 400):

So, i wouldn´t really say that it is an excellent camera, but a good one. Not without reason, dpreview assessed "highly recommended".

BTW: What´s your opinion about the lowlight streaks in video mode?

And to think I was seriously considering the GH1... hmm... it's still not -the- camera I've been looking for.

Come on, Nikon! Make me proud again!!

Thanks for the kind words. Actually no hdr and no photomatix, although some are processed with Topaz Adjust which I find gives a very interesting and dynamic look to the images. I shoot RAW exclusively and post process in ACR, CS4 which I think is crucial to getting the most out of any camera.

At this point I've only shot a very limited amount of video with the GH1 and I've honestly not shot anything that would show this. I'm waiting for my video head (Libec) and some Zeiss primes to arrive before I try to do too much video.

Cheers,

Topaz Adjust, as you'll see, is pretty wild and the best part is you can create your own presets based on others. There are a lot of parameters you can tweak. I find that the look of my work has evolved from pretty straight interpretations to more of a painting look. Topaz is a great building block for some of this.

I can also highly recommend Nik's Silver FXPro for B&W work.

Enjoy!

You guys should start a new thread to talk about this stuff.

Not necessary. We are pretty happy with this one here. No, kidding aside, you´re right jim. We have been a bit ot. Thanks for bringing it up.
- Ok, by any chance, we have just 6 days to wait until we´ll
get the announcement of a great new vdslr by nikon!?

@ simon
thx for the info

If those specs are right, then this camera is very easy to pass up and wait for the d400.

Adding autofocus, possible little mic jack, and CF cards is not even tempting.

I think this announcement will be very anticlimactic.

These rumored specs would really be a disappointment:

Movie
Frame size (pixels) 1,280 x 720/24 fps, 640 x 424/24 fps, 320 x 216/24 fps
File format AVI
Compression format Motion-JPEG
Autofocus Contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a frame is possible (Tripod mode)
Audio Sound can be recorded via built-in or optional external microphone; sensitivity can be adjusted
Maximum length 5 min (1,280 x 720 pixels), 20 min (640 x 424, 320 x 216 pixels)
But i don´t think that they are correct. I guess we´ll see at least 1080p24, h264, swivel lcd and a new faster sensor (sony).

The reason I think the poor specs are true is because is was first rumor that we heard that the new camera was going to be called d300s. It was never mentioned before.

That rumor was right about the name, and so I am assuming that the rest is correct, especially since it is so underwhelming.

Maybe it will have a swivel screen, but that is not of consequence for me.

I've got a Nikon to GHI m43 adapter located and expect Panasonic will get their GH1 supply problems worked out in the next month or two...just in case....

If those are true I've got serious doubts that Nikon gets it. I was really hoping that they'd step it up but those specs are underwhelming especially when compared to what the competition has been offering for a while now.
