If Nikon fails...

The d300s would just be a stopgap until d400.

I have no doubts that the next pro camera from Nikon following the d300s will have 1080p, manual controls, autofocus, better compresseion, and reduced jello. It's gonna happen, but it might mean waiting til the winter, which is fine by me.

Im still hope there is an announcement about a firmware update for the d90 and d5000...though it seems like most people have left that thought behind.

I've got a Nikon to GHI m43 adapter located and expect Panasonic will get their GH1 supply problems worked out in the next month or two...just in case....

Haha...yep, just in case... i guess i need to get used with the ideas:

- flog my d90 on ebay. I´m gonna fetch a really good price at the moment (around €650,- only for the body)
- purchase the gh1 (despite some mud + streaks problems) just as a stop-gap measure until nikon is able to offer a real good + less compromised version. Maybe a d400 in summer 2010.

I think i could live with the slightly less quality in photo mode for around 1 year. With the video mode of the d90 i´m fed up to the backteeth, sorry. But lets wait and hope a few days...

Exactly, although I don't think I'll do that well with my D90 body. Man, I sure hope it doesn't come to that though. Come on Nikon...deliver!!!! It will please me.

There is more than slightly less quality in the GH1's photo mode. It is significant, if you ask me. Slight differences are absolutely huge in regards to photography cameras.

The photos look better out of my old Canon Rebel XT 350 from 6 years ago.

This camera is rated way too high, because of its exclusive manual controls. The image is the most important thing, and that is given the benefit of the doubt due to the controllability.

In my case, I will have to take the "significant" hit on the stills side to get a "much" more functional video implementation. Of course, if the d300s comes through (and Nikon doesn't "fail"), I will go that route instead.

I'd be more inclined to get a pentax K7 with a vari ND filter and primes for pseudo manual control. It does 50-75Mbps m-jpeg!

funny thing...I sold my pentax K10D and the lenses to buy the nikon D90. Not that I regret my decision yet but soon mabe...

No doubt, picture quality in movie mode is somewhat better than what you find in the gh1, especially when it comes to panning + moving objects. But you can´t compare the datarate of different codecs like h264 and mjpeg. H264 is more effective. But, of course, a datarate of around 25-30mbps for the gh1 would be great - 17mbps is too little.

But the most important thing imo => you only get manual control over aperture - shutter speed + iso is controlled automatically. After the 5dii update + the gh1, full manual control is a must have. No way back. Besides that only 9 min. shooting time + no continous af.

Matt has expressed it pretty well a short while ago: "All i need in a camera is out there, just not in the same body at the same time. ".

???!!!????!!!!

- too many workarounds to get a good picture in movie mode
- always that struggle in post (stair step fix, noise reduction... etc)
- ..............................
Sure, it was a really good time and so exciting at the beginning. I had a lot of fun with it. And i´m proud that i could take part in this extraordinary development of film making. But now it´s over. I´ve broken up with "her" (regarding the movie mode).

The most important thing now is manual control and a better image quality. I´ve still some hopes that nikon gets their act together. If not.... well, that´s the topic of this thread :-)

I whole heartedly agree with both of your last two posts. Completely 100% agree and I think you've described my frustration with the D90 perfectly. Now I don't feel alone in my growing contempt of my former love interest. For the sake of this conversation we'll call her Niki.

I've been struggling lately with my growing contempt of my former love interest. For the sake of this conversation we'll call her Niki.

Niki started out looking really good to me, sure she wasn't quite as good looking as her Japanese cousin (Candi) but she was pretty in her own way and I loved her for that. Unfortunately after spending more and more time with her there were flaws that became apparent, annoying and just plain difficult to overlook any further. Then Candi had some work done and suddenly a few flaws they shared that had made me feel a little better about being with Niki were gone and my feeling of resentment began to arise. I mean if Candi could fix some of her flaws fairly easily why did Niki refuse even after I made it clear that they bothered me and could seriously affect our relationship?

It's difficult to feel stuck in a bad relationship but I've got a lot invested in this already, it would cost me dearly to get out and make a run at her cousin. I also have to confess that I'm still here with that woman because my pride won't allow me to admit that I was wrong all along, part of me is still hoping she'll change, that things will get better even though deep down inside I know nothing is going to be any different tomorrow.

Part of this is my fault as well for trying to make her something she's not, projecting my expectations on her and asking her to meet them. That's on me. When seen in this light, maybe all this is all my fault, maybe my own selfishness is to blame.

Why do I say it's my own selfishness? Well, if I'm being completely honest with myself when I'm laying in bed at night I wish Niki was Scarlet her American second cousin. I knew about Scarlet before I met Niki, even saw a picture or two and was completely enthralled with everything I was hearing. She was my dream girl, but she was untouchable, you could even say unavailable and it made me want her more. So when I got involved with Niki it was really Scarlet I wanted all along. Honestly, Scarlet is probably the only one out there who can really live up to what I'm looking for. It's just wrong of me to expect Niki or Candi to be Scarlet and that would explain my feelings of contempt and disgust when I look at them but I had to fill my need for someone and took what I could get at the time.

That's my situation and I think many of you are in the same boat. In the mean time I guess we can only do as the old song says, "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with"

i don't know, when i first got the camera i thought what the hell is this, but the more i've used it the more i've come to appreciate the look and i've developed many techniques throughout the process to make it look just like i want it. i've successfully blown it up to 35mm too and was really happy with it, more than enough quality for theatrical distribution in my opinion and that of the few hundred people attending my screening.

for me the top priority is manual control, given that i can keep the nice colors and the 24p of the d90, the obvious competitors fail at either or both.

seriously now!! a thousand dollar camera isn't a lot of investment. And certainly a three thousand dollar upgrade isn't either.

You get what you payed for... and you payed for some fun evenings out on the town a few times a week. Maybe its good, maybe its bad, but seriously if you want a real relationship you need to buck up and get off the couch.

ya the D90 has limits and I hate that mine is collecting dust due to having bucked up, but it is what I payed for ... a stills camera that does kinda cool video that in good hands(light) can look pretty darned good.:dankk2:

Seriously now, I wasn't being serious and obviously you've missed the point of my little (tongue in cheek) story. We're all bitching about cameras that aren't designed to do what we're wanting them to do and at some point have to admit that. Screaming at your Nikon or Canon wont make it be a purpose built video camera no matter how bad you want it to be. That's the point.

I have made my D90 look pretty darn good but it's HAVING to make it look good thats the trouble.

I realize that I'm not the fastest wide angle in the bag but the concept of video with DSLRs had never dawned on me until the d90...I would never scream at mine for anything. I do, however, want manual control and much longer recording times (and a few other things would be nice). I sure hope the d300s delivers. Niki don't fail me now!

Come on, saying Nikon is failing because their DSLR's don't record video footage as good as a pro video camera is absurd. Not to mention downright unfair.

The D3 and the D700 are just amazing cameras. Yet they don't shoot pro video so they "suck"?? Maybe it's just me wearing my "Nikon Pro-photog Fanboy" hat but seems to me more like a end-user fail expecting a DSLR to preform like a pro video cam. Give me a break.

I'm not saying the two shouldn't merge, I think it's inevitable. And I think RED will prove it to be a viable tool and maybe even a "game-changer". But just buy a RED and be happy.

Let Nikon keep creating high quality Pro Photography cameras until the novelty feature of DSLR video matures itself enough to warrant a brand new Nikon camera model to compete. That would be the smart business decision for Nikon. Don't expect them to stretch themselves too thin and destroy perfectly good DSLR designs to dive into the Pro Video market. They are not that big of a company. Pro Photographer's are their core customer base and it's what they need to remain focused on. Videographers need not apply. This is not the right tool for job you are trying to accomplish. Get a video camera and stop whining.

And a consumer grade camera doesn't need manual video controls to make the consumer market happy. Which is what a D90 is. They can experiment with consumer video to gain some experience before trying to win gold medals in a market they don't even know how to swim in yet. geez.

manual controls aren't hard, they are easy, and the lack of them is just a design flaw, higher bitrates are a bit harder but probably not that hard but again limited by design to keep file sizes down because that's what a lot of people want. these are my concerns and those of many others. now there are things like jello, full pixel sampling, 1080p and so on that i think are technical limitations that they couldn't have made the d90 accomplish anyway so i agree that's unfair. the sensor and processor aren't better than that since as you say it's a still camera that's been taught some tricks.
