If Nikon fails...

well, they were perfectly entitled to not release an almost great *video camera* in the first place.

I agree. When I first saw the D movie quality of my D90 I was very dissapointed. How can such a "quality" come from a DSLR? Shouldn't they leave video alone if they can't do it better? But then there was the excuse, ok it's a consumer camera, it's a first step (I expressed my dissapointment to Nikon (in friendly words) by the way). I sold my D90 and started to wait (for months).

Now the D300s is listed under professional cameras. There was qualified hope that "professionals" will get something a lot better. Who is the video mode in the $1800 D300s body aimed at? Wedding photographers, journalists like the 5DM2? I don't see that stair steps and bad compression fit well. And the in camera movie editing who needs that? Don't pros need full manual controls rather than just Arperture control?

Nikon should have really stepped away from offering VDSLRs unless they can do a lot better. I don't understand them. I love my D700 and I would have loved to put a D300s alongside but as it looks now Nikon will not satisfy my video requirements in the foreseeable future. I can't help but will have to make friends with Canon.

surely you mean the other way around?!? haven't done much software development yourself, have you?

I have written a little code in my day, but only a very little. I understand the software development process.

However I don't understand why creating an entirely new piece of software would be easier than modifying an already-existing one. Enlighten me please if I'm mistaken.

People here are always mistakenly comparing the d300 to the 5d.

The d700 is the direct competitor the 5d. The d300 is not even full frame.

The D700x is supposed to be unveiled in October with 1080p, .h264, and QT MOV compression.
The d300s is an incremental upgrade until they can make a bigger leap to the d400 next year.

It's like everybody put all their chips on this incremental announcement, as if they were drowning. Which is silly to me considering that is was an incremental upgrade. If it was substantial it would have been the d400 OR d700x.

I don't see what the big deal is about waiting a bit longer. It's not like the GH1 or 5d have it figured out yet. If they had, then people wouldn't still be looking to Nikon.

Well said. I'd be waiting for the d700x.

Anyone know what's happening on the 4th August next week or is it the same announcements?

How accurate is this info/rumor? Not that I'm questioning you, but if you have any links it would be greatly appreciated.

As for the compression, hopefully it won't be uber compressed, but have some breathing room like the 5D mkII's very nice codec and compression scheme. Also, hopefully it will be drag and drop QT MOV files into Final Cut without any transcoding.

The Canon 60D is sounding good, but still, limited to that darn 30p. If this D700x info is true, then I would bet a lot of us could wait a little longer for something this good.

There is a supposed, leaked Nikon roadmap for future releases. There have been 2 leaked roadmaps, but only one of them has been right about releases thus far, and it was leaked awhile back.

The rumor has been that August 4th is a coolpix announcement; nothing to do with anything we care about here.

Thanks JIm. Love the avatar by the way.

If it is October, I can wait since it seems that there is the Canon 60D rumors up in the air for approx. September.

I probably shouldn't ask (and look it up myself) but do you have the URL to the accurate leaked roadmap? I'm curious what it says about the d400.

Thank you sir but this one says:

Nikon D300s – differences from the D300:The new processor speeds up AF and significantly increases the quality Movie mode as compared to the D90 and D5000,
Movie – mode: 1920 * 1080 at 24 fps Quicktime MOV, H.264 codec

...a total miss. Is it the other one that got it right?

Yeah, that is different. But it doesn't disqualify its for me. Almost every other detail is right and it was leakd some time ago.

The thing that is of interest to me is the release dates, and intended goals.

It had the announcement dates, and items to be announced before anybody knew there was even going to be an announcement.

It also had the announcement days switched: August 4th was the predicted date for those specific announcements, while the July 30th was for something else.

I a going to continue to believe that it is real in the sense that it is a roadmap of intentions, that are not set in concrete. If it is fake, then the person who made it has had an uncanny percentage of details right thus far.

This is very likely not the case. It was just a rumor. The same "leaked roadmap" said the 300s would have the same thing, but it didn't.

this so called leaked roadmap got quite a lot of things right, but what it got right was allready known... what it didn't get right was pretty much wishfull thinking.

One more thing: h264 is not all that great. Better than low bitrate mJPEG, well, ok. But it's not very good.

Nikon should put cineform to work, or get sonys mpeg4 format, like Convergent Design did for their recorders.

in what way? sure, they often use the high efficiency to reduce bandwidth rather than increase quality, but given the same bitrate, are there any codecs that are better? more compatible? i don't know of any. proprietary formats like cineform or non standard mpeg-4 doesn't count. some kind of jpeg at high bitrate is my wish, ~100 mbps like dvcpro would be awesome and still compatible with normal flash cards and hard drives.

here's hoping they do 24p this time. I could sell the MKII and have enough spare change for a nice lens. It sounds like it's going to have a faster processor than the MKII so there should be less jello.

here's hoping they do 24p this time...

Here too. But i haven´t high hopes for that. Either they put it in both gears (5DII update + 60d) or neither of them. Either way, i´ll go for canon - it´s a basic decision. Sure, 30p to 24p is time consuming and you´ll always get a slight quality loss. But if you have the right tools it´s doable. And canon will bring out 24p, that´s for sure. Sleep well nikon...

If it has full manual control it will be even better than the MKII due to the crop sensors deeper DOF which means I can shoot at f2.8 and work in lower light without the DOF being too shallow like it is on a full frame sensor. A swivel LCD would be icing on the cake but I'm not holding my breath.

That EF-S 17-55mm image stabilized lens looks tempting, I could sell 4 nikon primes in that focal range to cover the cost.
