I Am Legend

Can't wait to see this film. Mainly because of The Dark Knight trailer that precedes it. :)
The Dark Knight trailer wasn't that great. I'll see the movie because I thought Batman Begins was so good. I HATE superhero movies, but liked Christian Bale's Batman so I want to see the next one. And I could have sworn I saw Kirsten Dunst in the trailer but she doesn't show up on IMDb for the project.

The more we talked about it (Mark Johnson, Slimothy and myself) the more we felt that I Am Legend was insulting the audience.

EDIT: In fact, Mark Johnson and I just watched The Omega Man again tonight. While it is quite dated and the music score is laughable, it is still a better movie than I Am Legend. Save your money and rent The Omega Man.

Agreed--Omega Man is still the best adaptation. Will Smith was ok but just a little bit lacking overall.

I remember hearing about I Am Legend finally going into production and I still think Christian Bale would've been perfect as Neville.

I wasn't disappointed with the film, but wow, what a rushed ending. And those damn CG vampire/zombies--don't get me started. I am so sick of CG for its own sake.

Couldn't agree more. Just got back from seeing this. The creatures were totally laughable. C'mon cg artists and creature designers - you're going to have to do better than that. It's 2007.

If I have to sit through another creature movie with a generic, naked, pasty, hairless zombie antagonist who does nothing but hunch up his shoulders and give long, furious screams directly into the camera with his ridiculously wide open mouth...well, enough already.

It had some good points. I loved the dog. The deer hunting scenes were great "action" filmmaking. The steel shutters and the booby traps were very cool touches. I really do love survivalist/post apocalyptic movies...

But the story, I dunno, the whole time I was thinking- why isn't this a more exhilarating ride? Cool idea, could have (should have) been so much better.

I thought the first two acts were great.

Everything fell apart when they introduced Anna, though. The third act was so half-assed, and the ending was lame.

Could have been so much better.

I saw it at midnight... Fantastic!

Like TLITW, or actually good?

Sorry...couldn't help it.

Did the CGI hold up for you?... because there are a few complaints on here about that.

I loved Omega Man (chessy as it was), and I would like to enjoy this flick if possible, but Will Smith just irks me at times...and I can't stand crappy CGI.

I'm bothered by the overuse/dependancy on CGI today. It was almost like they used it simply to be different than 28 Days Later, etc. In "I Am Legend" it was completely unnecessary to have Beowulf zombies. I'd take the cheezy a$$ makuep zombies from Omega Man over these synthetic abominations.

Real humans playing crazed zombies would've worked fine. The movie had sequences that you would swear were straight from a video game.

The only Will Smith movie I ever cared for was Independence Day. I guess he peaked after his first movie... I loved the dark knight trailer, though. I cant wait for it to come out in IMAX.

IAL had real actors portraying the Dark Seekers at one point - the following explains why they changed their minds at the last minute. But I agree with you that they still could and should have used real actors.

A week into filming, Francis Lawrence felt the infected, who were being portrayed with actors wearing prosthetics, were not convincing. His decision to use computer-generated imagery meant post-production had to be extended and the budget increased. Lawrence explained, "They needed to have an abandon in their performance that you just can’t get out of people in the middle of the night when they’re barefoot. And their metabolisms are really spiked, so they’re constantly hyperventilating, which you can’t really get actors to do for a long time or they pass out."

I love how effects seem to work now. Slightest hitch occurs and the director says, why don't we just make it cg. I'm hard-pressed to believe a little bit of creativity and hard work wouldn't have gotten them past the hurdle. Not only would the movie have been scarier and more realistic, but they would have (obviously) saved millions of dollars and tons of extra time in post.

Cg creature work in movies is still leaving me completely cold. Boo.

100% agreed.

I thought so much of the "virtual NY" CG looked great and I pretty much bought into it, but once the creatures came out, suspension of disbelief vanished.

On another note--I think it's too bad they deviated so much from the novel. In the book, Neville has an adversarial relationship with the leader of the hive that added a great depth to the story. In this movie it's nothing but scary boo moments from anonymous nothing drones.

Wasn't Ridley Scott originally supposed to direct this?
