Hey guys, I shot a short film on the DVX entitled "Elevation" for a production class last spring. It's a 15 minute romantic comedy about two strangers, an elevator, and the ups and downs of pursuing romance! (that's straight off my flyer!). Anyways, here's the link:

EDIT (05/16/06) Higher quality, smaller file!

Or you can go to my website (it's the banner in my signature) and go to the media section.

It got accepted into the Hawaii International Film Festival so far.

It's awesome to see a fellow hawaii filmmaker in this board. I'm glad you made it into the HIFF, I'd love to go to see your film but I guess it sold out. Looks interesting too.

I recognized Roy from the trailer. Good stuff!!

I thought it was really cute. the concept has been used here and there, but this looks somewhat refreshing. nice job.

Thanks guys. The short played these past two Sundays at the Hawaii International Film Festival. It was a blast! Now to work on the DVD.

Just to let you guys know, the film also got into the Hawaii Pacific University "Shorts on the Rocks" film festival and won the award for Best Film.

Also it got into the Shanghai International Film Festival and I'll actually be attending it this summer, paid for by the school. :-)

Very cool. Did you use a real elevator as I'm thinking of doing a short and the elevator is a huge part of the story and here in NY it's hard to find one without getting thrown out of the building, lol...

loooks good can't wait to get out there next year. It is pretty intresting how acm kids make films. I would think that a movie made in hawaii would be shot on diamond head but the hawaiian influences in the video seem alot more suddle. I think that becuase you live in hawaii you look at it alot difrently.

Yeah it was a real elevator. I thought about building a fake one as a set and shooting that though my D.P. who is a grad student got us access to a building on campus during the evening hours where we could shoot. That meant we could only shoot on nights and weekends so some of those shoots you see was shot at 2 in the morning!

I can see how it'd be harder for you from where you're from to get an elevator though my advice is to maybe find an elevator on campus (if you go to school). Originally I went around to different office buildings seeing if they'd let us shoot there and each of them said no. If this is a school project, a school building might be more willing to help you out.

I mean an elevator is an elevator. You could always shoot the interiors there and then shoot the elevator exteriors at the real office location and just cut to two together. Magic of film. :)

Yeah. To a lot of people who aren't from here, Diamond Head and all the things typically associated with "Hawaii", that's the first things they notice. To us, it's just home. Another thing people don't realize is that if you live in Honolulu, it's probably more urbanized than 70% of America. A lot of cityboys and girls here would find a suburb quaint.

My personal slant was that Hollywood movies always portray Hawaii as one way, the stereotypical way, and that isn't an inclusive look at the land. Just because it's in Hawaii, it doesn't necessarily have to be about surfing or whatnot. People here have the right to have romantic comedy stories, just like everyone else. :)

At the same time, there's a lot of good filmmakers in the ACM program that are tackling on "Hawaii" issues head on, but they're doing it in a way that is culturally accurate and aware and not a postcard image of Hawaii.

It reminds me a lot of the movie, "Once Were Warriors." A New Zealand film starring Jango Fett before he became Jango Fett. People hear New Zealand and they think tropic, they think paradise. They don't think of lower income ghettoes, they don't think of the class division between white foreigners and Maori people. If you get the chance you guys should watch it (although it's hard to find on DVD). It has one of the best opening shots of a movie. It fades in to a pristine image of a beach front, then the camera slowly tilts down and you realize it's a posterboard overlooking a dirty polluted highway. Good stuff.
