HVX200: Shoot uncompressed?

I have searched these forms but have not found an answer...

If I am shooting direct to disc with my HVX200 using a program like OnLocation can I shoot uncompressed through the A/V outs? It seems like I heard someone on these forums talking about it...

1) Can I shoot uncompressed with HVX200
2) If so then how do I do it?
3) Are there any other ways to get the higher quality footage out of the HVX200?

Thanks in advance!

The firewire output is compressed. If you want uncompressed output, you'd have to get an analog component HD capture board, and capture from the analog outputs.

The words BEST and CHEAP don't go together so let me ask these two separate questions....

1) What is the BEST analog HD capture board for use on a mac with HVX200

2) What is the CHEAPEST analog HD capture board for use on a mac with HVX200

Why do you need uncompressed? The camera section of the HVX 200 is probably more of a limiting factor than the DVC Pro 100 codec.

The black magic has come a long way.... Ide go with the AJA KONA ... You can up/down cross convert on the fly. But it is 2800. Also depends on which mac you have.

If your on a laptop .. look at the MATOX2

Barry, I am wondering if there is a significant increase in quality capturing in this way. I assume a lot would depend on the quality of the board, but are there inherent limitations in this workflow that would limit the possible improvements in quality over DVCPro HD footage?

Thanks,
Kevin

I would be very surprised if any increase in quality you may get outweighs the hassle and what you give up.

I'm guessing since your name is 'world stunt team' that stunts are what you shoot. If that is the case then I could imagine shooting in some tough locations and run and gun situations. If that's true then running cable from the camera to a computer is definitely not worth the major headache this will cause. Also some situations could be impossible. Use P2.

That's what I was thinking as well. Unless one is using something like the now defunct Hydra solution, I wonder whether any significant increase in quality would really be possible.

Direct to Hard Drive

Direct to Hard Drive

Fellas:

Is it possible to record firewire out from HVX200 throught FCP directly to a hard drive, avoiding having to ingest from P2 cards?

I have every style Mac in my studio but my work station is a 3.2Ghz Quad core (8 core) with 32 Gigs of RAM. This is the Mac I will want the card for...

I wanted to shoot uncompressed to get the highest quality signal...right? How much better is it?
