HVX price in Canada and pre-orders

Western Canada has next to zero knowledgable, good dealers.. so scratch service off the list, and price, well we all know that story.

Well, as many of you know I work for a "local" western canadian dealer (here in Vancouver) and do try my best to keep in touch with this forum to better my knowledge for the DVX and HVX. I freelance on weekends and use the DVX in everyday scenerarios. I try to answer as many technical camera questions as I can. I have attended HD workshops (SantaFe) where our DVCPro product manager David Craig has passed on excellent information about the Varicam and what it's capable of. David has also recently answered questions (that I couldn't) for customers on the HVX which was mentioned at the time they pre-ordered the camera. The support is there IMHO.

If a customer has an issue with a camera, which is admittedly rare...and our in-house service tech can't fix it (for a head alignment or more complex issue)...generally repairs take only 2-3 days. At the time of purchasing a camera, I personally go through the menus with the customer and give them a basic tour of functions (sometimes this isn't needed). Hopefully there is some value in that (?).

As for pricing, there's always somewhere cheaper south of the border...but we do try to be as competitive as we can. We have a certain dealer price from Panasonic canada, but normally we are within a couple hundered dollars of the DVX USA prices (I hope)...with canadian warranty. At basically $4,000 for a DVX100B are we really that much more expensive?

To clarify, any prices quoted on the HVX in canada are subject to change...with a lower price...not a higher price. ie) if you are quoted a "street price" now for pre-order...when the camera ships it will be no more than that amount.

Anyways, I thought I'd chime in and give my 2cents...or at least TRY to defend us local guys :-)
This is a great forum for information and I do send alot of my customers here as well. Perhaps there should be more Canadian sponsoring of this site...quite possible!! (hint)
We're all enthusiastic about the HVX and can't wait to offer the camera to our customers...and even use it ourselves.

Thanks for listening,
Cheers,

Brian Broz

Brian:

It's nice to know there are dealers in Canada that tries to be competitive. I for one will keep you in mind for future purchases.

Any pricing on the HVX200?

Thanks

Hmmm...what if all the Western Canadian members put in a huge order with Brian? See what kind of deal he can cook up. :)

Why not get all Canadians in on the deal?

Jarred, thanks for clearing this whole issue up. It really is a shame that Panasonic Canada is oblivious to consumer satisfaction.

I wonder if the over inflated prices are meant to keep the US shoppers from buying on our side of the border? After all, there are 300 million of them vs 30 million of us.

$1000 savings? That's a 4GB P2 card or half the cost of a Firestore FS-100. So worth it.

Our Northern Neighbors need a Canada-Jan to fight for their rights to get better deals.

yeah.. I think that is the fundamental issue, is that they need a good front person to make some changes.. Rush, you really put the canadian dealers in tough situation heh heh.. Unbelievable pricing, and Outstanding service. Pat yourself on the back :)

Hi everyone,
I want to be careful not to step on anyone's toes (as we are not a dvxuser.com site sponsor)...but I wanted to pass on information. I hope it is alright to post list pricing here (?)
As of yesterday (Nov. 22nd) we received new lower pricing on the P2 cards from Panasonic canada. There has been a significant price reduction.
HVX200 (camera only) pricing has remained the same ($7500.00 List) but new P2 list pricing is as follows:

AJP2004HG 4Gb P2 Card $900.00
AJP2008HG 8Gb P2 Card $1800.00

Despite being the Suggested List price it's safe to call it a "street" price.
This is approx. $500.00 less per 8Gb card than our last indication back in Sept!
Good news for everyone...
Hope that helps,

Brian Broz

heh heh.. maybe Canada upted the ante and will give reason for you US guys to buy something from Canada... but I betcha US price will be adjusted as well.

Great to hear about the lower price on the P2 cards. It was bound to happen, and I'm certain it will keep happening.

I remember buying a 32MB CompactFlash card for $300 a few years ago. Now you can get a gig for under $90.

By the way folks, I now have a dilemma.

I've just been given the green light on a project. The timing requires that we start shooting in mid January, and everything needs to be done by mid March.

I really want to shoot with the HVX200. I even have the budget to purchase it. The problem is, it's sounding like Panasonic is already dealing with back-orders even before the first units have shipped.

The problem is, I can't risk ordering the camera if there's a chance I wouldn't have it in January. I would have to rent the HD100 instead, which in turn would eat enough of the budget that I would no longer be able to purchase the HVX.

So, I'm hoping Brian may be able to help me out here:

- Brian: are you confident that if I ordered the HVX from LLSR I would have it in time for this shoot? (i.e. based on any pre-orders you've received and the numbers of units you are expecting to get from Panasonic)

- Everyone else: if I can't get the HVX in time, would it make more sense to buy the JVC HD100, rather than rent it, and then sell it later to get back some of the money to eventually buy the HVX?

Sorry Neopics, I'm trying to follow your reasoning re:

"would it make more sense to buy the JVC HD100, rather than rent it, and then sell it later to get back some of the money to eventually buy the HVX?".

Sell it later to get back some of the money to eventually buy the HVX.......?

He's saying his plan is eventually to get an HVX one way or the other, but if it's not going to be possible for this shoot, he doesn't want to torch a bunch of money renting an HD100, so he's wondering if buying and selling the HD100 would net out to be less expensive than just renting the HD100 for the duration of the shoot.

Yes.. and it will probally work out to the same.

Instead you might ask your dealer if you buy the HVX, and it doesnt arrive in time, if they will let you rent the HD100 at a very discounted rate if not for free... I know Vidcom and LL both rent cameras, so one of them may step up to bat and help you out.
