HVX/Mac Teething Issues

Hi Everyone,

Just so you know, your collective footage convinced us here at Bose Asia Pacific to grab the new HVX202EN for our Production operations on the Gold Coast in Australia - your footage and a pretty impressive demo by Barry Green in Brisbane recently. Couple of teething problems I'd like some help with - I'm sure there's an answer somewhere.

1./ A number of people have reported the same problem on these forums but I'm not having any luck with the suggested solutions. FinalCut Pro 5.0.4 recognises the clips on the camera, but gives that infamous "One or more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt files." I tried copying all the files using the P2 Hard Drive PCS060, then importing the files off that - same problem. OK no luck there - let's try P2 Log. I get one step further here - it recognises the clips ( albeit only the first one in the demo version ) and I get a pretty thumbnail. I go to play my clip and it looks like this:

MyFirstHVXScreenGrab.jpg

The files play back perfectly on the camera.

2./ I tried to then take the P2 cards and read them onto my G4 Powerbook. Figured I might have some luck there. The Powerbook acknowledges a card is plugged in but doesn't bring up an icon on the screen and won't allow me access to the Card. I've tried the switching between Write PRotect ON/OFF. Doesn't make a difference.

3./ It's probably in the manual but while I'm here I'll ask. I took a sunset timelapse shot last night in "Interval" mode at a rate of one shot every 10 seconds. Got about 7 second of footage. Now when I go to thumbnail preview it has a red box around it and I can't play back the file on the camera - is there something special I have to do here? I will go research some more.

So needless to say I have all this footage I'd love to take a squiz at on my FCP setup but I can't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FCP 5.0.4 has major problems with MXF files, the sensible thing to do is to upgrade.

If the P2 drivers are installed, you should see the card mount as a removeable disk. If you don't have the drivers, you can get the latest version HERE.

Thanks THoff,

The driver worked. I can now download the same crap picture onto my laptop!!

The interval playback issue I sorted by changing to the correct camera mode in the record setup menu. I realise now you can only playback clips from the thumbnail menu when the camera is in the record mode that the footage was captured in. Doesn't make a great deal of sense that to playback you need to adjust the record settings, but it works so no probs there.

So my problems now are:

1./ Can't recognise files in FCP 5.0.4 - Am in the prcess of trying to upgrade - what happened to the simple download??! Gotta fill out some forms there and send my old discs back.

2./ P2 log imports the footage as above on any mac i try it on. Just for the record, I have formatted the P2 cards on the camera.

Updating FCP is a simple download. Like: run the system prefs app, choose software-update and follow intructions... :)
EDIT: as long as are within the same version of course. But from 5.0.4 to 5.1.x shouldn't be a problem.

Going from 5.0.4 to 5.1 requires a disc swap, not a software update.

It runs from $49.00 USD to $199.00 USD. 5.1 is a UB, and 5.0.4 is not
