HVX in Europe only with two P2 cards incl.

Unlike in the US (am i right here?), the consumer and the broadcast market here in Germany are more or less strictly divided. And in the pro market here HD hasn´t really taken off yet, so for getting a cheap HD cam, you´ll at least have to support the P2 platform and hopefully in the future stick to it.

I stated this before: Pana wants to sell P2 not the HVX, they don`t wanna rival the HDV market, but promote their existing HD format and their existing storage format with the HVX. The bundle probably is a good deal for pros, so why should they change something?
I´m even expecting bundles with P2 AND Firestore...
All that said, I hope to be proven wrong soon ;o]

PS 4000 preorders means 8000 more 8GB cards sold for Pana, maybe then they can afford to sell bigger cards for less ;o]

OK Spartacus, but why do they sell the cam alone in the US in that case? if their goal is to sell P2 they should probably use the same commercial politic in the US, no?
i think it s just that europe is filled with sony products and US with panasonic. the dvx100 was very successfull in the US but is not very famous in europe (just for indies). so panasonic thinks that only professionals will buy this cam in europe, and that they can afford P2 cards. but things change and people know more about panasonic here in europe ..... Pana has to be aware of that

the guy from panasonic told someone at Satis that there will be a bundle with the HVX, 2 P2 cards and a firestore for less than 10000€ .... lots of differents informations .....

AllI meant is for me - the NTSC camera causes more problems in my current workflow. I would have to standards convert everything I shot SD for my clients - which is just not an option. Right now to show even a short on HD to 99% of the population in the UK would mean also converting your 24p HD footage to 25p SD.

The only use for 24p HD is for projecting a feature film; but I honestly think that its rather ambitious of me to think it would get projected when I've seen some amazing movies go straight to DVD with a budget 100,000 times greater than anything I could muster. The blair witch's of this world are few and far between.

Its much more likely that at best my film will get a distribution deal on DVD, and 25p is fine for that.

25p is not so bad at all. In fact I like it because it complies with our TV specs and is very close to film frame rate. It's a really good compromise format that fits bang in the middle of TV and feature film distribution. If there were that many problems converting 25p to 24p why would indie filmmakers in the US use PAL equipment to make short/feature films? (ok, until the DVX100 and 24p became avaibale PAL was pretty much standard amongst the budding film-maker).

As for speeding up and slowing down - if you do this right you will get no artifacting. I have taken whole music tracks and used something as basic as adobe encore to speed up to a specific length whilst retaining perfect pitch. I dont see it as a big deal. We watch all Hollywood 24p films in 25p on our TV's over here - no problem there either.

Nothing is perfect true, but were are lucky enough to live in a time where this technology is afforbadle enough to the pro-sumer. When I think about what I can do on my home PC with my DVX100 compared to what I could do at media college 12 years ago - well, I'm blown away.

My only complaint would be Panasonic forcing me to buy 2 P2 cards, I can live without 24p though.

After all at least Panasonic gives a European guarantee, meaning i can buy in the UK and repair in Austria.

So does JVC and most others. That's also a good thing from the E.U.

i sent a reply to roberts forum entry (in german). i give 4 reasons why no P2 (for some users):
1. using DV only until the P2 workflow is established
2. renting P2 (because 16GB is not even enough and more is too expensive anyway)
3. working with Foirestore or other HD-devices. maybe in combination with 4GB P2 card?!
4. waiting for larger P2 media anyway

Totally agree!

Mikko, I can even agree only partially with you, BUT...you were not 100% fair. As you said (don't worry, I don't quote you), these questions are NOT less important! If you didn't know, you must re-think your observation, not even for me, but for a question of methodology: (re-)quoting is important to any discussion. Precisely, for not to lost from beginning to end.

On the one hand, inter-quoting, vertically (in the same thread) or horizontally (between threads) is the strength of any forum, the dvxuser as well. It means more knowledge for all.

On the other hand, anyone have his/her/their own way of promote the query and it wasn't nice your unquestionable prescription.

Finally, we are in a OPEN & FREE (isn't it?) common ground. My friend, we live in a non-linear environment, as you well know! You don't like, you can always jump over! Why not? If it's not of your interest... And none post could stop any other posts of somebody else's, so?!....

Emanuel, don't take things personal. You do indeed sound too "enthusiastic", with French liberté quotes, "British Fellows", and so on. (at least for me).
I believe Mikko is not attacking you personally, just saying to you to stay more on the subject and be more objective.

As for the question at hand, I believe this bundle is really something to worry about. However, I believe Jan can have a word or two with Panasonic Europe representatives. Don't forget, it was HER that was at IBC (in Europe) to show the HVX, and not a Panasonic Europe Manager. That being said, there definetly is contact and cooperation between US and EU Panasonic.

More so, for the European Pal users, don't forget: Pal is not limited only to Europe. There are Pal countries all over the world, and I believe there's even one representative for a PAL country visiting these forums regularly (Hello, Pananz :)

Australian, New Zealand or even Asian import... Why not?

Panasonic Broadcast Europe has its own forum
Excellent post, Robert. That appears to be a direct conduit to Panasonic Europe Broadcast -- they may or may not read DVXUser, but they certainly read their own forum! If there's going to be an answer to the question, it would likely come from there. Thanks for finding that link and posting it!

I just got a mail from Panasonic Finland and they said that nothing has yet been confirmed. And all that they have been talking about is that HVX will cost under 10000 eur with two 8GB cards. Nothing has been said and decided about not selling the camera without P2 cards.

And at the moment it seems that it will hit the markets on first quarter of 2006.

and 2 more reasons why P2 might not be wanted together with an HVX200:

5. having already one or more P2 cards (owners of VariCam or buyers of several HVXs)
6. wanting some "odd" constellation of P2-cards (e.g. one 4GB and one 8GB or five 8GB with a nice discount)

and last but not least a bad joke:
7. using the HVX only as a webcam...

Point five is the best argument. ;-)

Let's hope.

Dear Sir or Madam,

as other people stated before, I would not like to
hear that the upcoming HVX200 will be available
as a P2 bundle only in Europe.

If the HVX200 will be available for around 5000 to 5500
EUROs plus 16% vat without P2 cards in Germany, I will
buy one right when it becomes available.
Otherwise I will probably simply buy the JVC GY-HD100.

BTW: I am planning on buying and using P2 cards. But
simply not yet.

Just waned to let you know "the mind of a potential
customer".

kind regards

done that.
