HVX 200a P2 card into FCS2???

Ok got FCS 2 and loaded for several hours last night. Trying to ingest P2 into edit by using log and transfer. Nothing showing up in window. What do I have to do to ingest into FCS2???

Ok if you remember me I am the one that has the IMAC. I upgraded from FCEXP 4 to FCS2. I went from 1 GB of memory to 4GB that I installed yesterday. No problem piece of cake. Took me about 4 hours or so to load in FCS2. Everything is working great and I have been watching the Basic Training Video all day today($100). Tom Wolsky shows you how to use log and transfer but he is ingesting from a CD that has his P2 info. I am trying to do this. Hook up HVX200a using firewire to capture into FCS2. I am opening up log and transfer and I get the window but no P2 info. It's like my HVX200a doesn't exist. Keep in mind I am a true rookie here. Where am I screwing this up???

When you refer to "loading" are you meaning to say installing?

Have you:

1. Installed the Mac specific p2 drivers?

2. Put the HVX200 in the firewire connect mode?

3. Make certain that the p2 card is write protected?

4. Press the mode button to get to the thumbnails and then press it again for five seconds to get to firewire connect?

1. Installed the mac specific P2 drivers? Went to Panasonic site and downloaded P2 Ingest.
2. HVX200 in firewire connect mode? yes
3. Write protected? No
4. Press mode button yes. After holding for 5 seconds all the P2 info made it into the Log and trans.
Thanks David. S for the help.
My brain is on overload from this.(Been at it most of the day) Gonna take a dinner break........ I know I am doing all this the hard way but am willing and want to do it the right way. A lot of info to figure out. A lot of manuals to read. If anyone has the time for any more advise please feel free to hit me with it. I am a fast learner. JB

yes when I clicked it, it did nothing. After I held the mode button the firewire brought the p2 card in. I'm just a rookie figuring this all out. It's really cool all the help I am getting on this site. Thanks to all. I really need to go back over the book on the HVX as well as the FCS2 books. It's a lot of info I need to know. What are your thoughts on the FCS2 Basic training by Tom Wolsky ?? He seems to go over everything pretty well.

You downloaded P2CMS...that thing you called the P2 Ingest. You need the P2 DRIVERS. The drivers that make the Mac recognize the card. That is not included in the P2CMS loader application.

DAVID S.: NOISE Industries FX Factory installed? Not sure and what is it?
Shane Ross: I got the camera to feed to FCS2 through firewire. Now I am working on sending P2 to a separate laptop to load onto cd's for storage purposes and to ingest into FCS2. JB

if you dont know what the noise industry stuff is, you definitely dont have it... its something you have to buy

CDs??? are you crazy?!?!? thats going to take weeks... i think youre going about this the wrong way anyway. i would not log and transfer FROM the CAMERA. once you get your correct drivers installed - COPY all your card media (CONTENTS folder AND lastclip.txt file) to your hard drive and then log and transfer from that. the way youre doing it now, you wont have an archive of the footage once you wipe your p2 card(s) you will ony have whats in your capture scratch folder...

Thanks for the links and I am always open to new ideas. My first thought is if I save it all to my hard drive on the MAC, won't it eat up all my space. I have an IMAC that had 1 gb and I installed 4 gb for FCS2. I am pretty sure that this stuff is gonna take up all my space real quick. Any thoughts on just using regular external hard drives instead of CD's. I was thinking CD's because it is just the raw footage and after I edit in the timeline I will export the finished copy to another cd any ways. Thanks. JB

instead of CD's.
lets do the math here. the smallest P2 card is 4 gigs. a CD holds just over 600megs. with that youd need more than 6 discs. add to that that im pretty sure its logistically unrealistic (if not impossible) to separate the contents of a P2 card.

won't it eat up all my space
YEP! and with that i say welcome to the game ; )

NOBODY works with P2 to their main hard drive (not for long anyway)
aside from the space issue, from a performance perspective, working off your boot drive isnt advisable. can be done, just not the best idea...
EVERYBODY works on external (or at least secondary internal) drives. here is the one i use most often:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEAQ7500GB16/
on that one drive, i can fit about 3 months of 30 second tv spot work for a client who does about 3 new spots a week

QUESTION: does your imac have a firewire800 port? you need AT LEAST that to work effectively with dvcproHD footage.

the way i work is in each client folder i have another folder labeled P2 and in that folder i have other folders to which i copy the contents of each filled P2 card (named normally CARD_01, CARD_02 and so on) these folders are essentially my source archive. when you do a log and transfer in FCP you are actually converting and copying footage from your source into the capture scratch folder on your designated "scratch disc" (which should also be on an external drive). yes its somewhat redundant but hard drives are cheap.

if you log and transfer directly from the card/camera, all you will have is what you've log and transferred. imagine, a couple weeks later that footage somehow gets corrupted or you decide you want more footage from the shoot - by this time, you have likely already formatted your cards and shot other stuff on them - so your original source footage is now gone.

Awesome job on the info wgzn I can't thank you enough for your time. I am assuming that you can load P2 directly into the external hard drive with firewire/usb. If so than I just pull into FCS2 through the external hard drive. JB

yep. thats the way you do it. my workflow in the field is similar to yours. i have an old powerbook g4 that i connect a firewire800 drive. as i fill a card i hand it off to an assistant and they pop it into the powerbooks pcmcia slot. then transfer the card to the firewire drive.

i have them check each transfer by opening a couple random clips in p2log pro (www.imagineproducts.com) once they verify its copied they eventually hand it back to me and i'll reformat it in camera. using 3 16 gig cards we just repeat this process all day and ive never had an issue.

doing this, when i get back to the studio i have a drive full of the days shooting that i can immediately open up and begin doing log and transfer in fcp (following the directions the rest of the gang has pointed out earlier in the discussion)

remember when doing a drag and drop copy from a p2 card open the card from either the desktop or finder and do a select all, being sure that you have both the CONTENTS folder and lastclip.txt file selected. and copy and paste that to a new empty folder on your external drive.

WGZN or Shane: Ok got a couple more questions for you. Assuming I get the hard drive(Mercury elite) from the link you sent me. Will it work with the IMAC about two years old. The firewire I have looks like a 6 pin connector going into the mac. There are two firewire ports exactly the same. I also have a two year old Toshiba laptop that has a slot on the side with two chambers. My P2 card fits in the bottom slot perfectly. I than downloaded all the drivers but I can not get my laptop (not mac) to recognize the P2 card or is it the drivers are not picking up the P2 info. JB
