if your imac doesnt have a 9pin (firewire800) port, youre pretty much going to HAVE to work from your internal drive.
i have made firewire400 work with dvcproHD, but not well at all.
if you have usb2.0 ports you an use that to quickly get the content off your internal once your project is finished. but this is one case where a good "single folder" file management process will be VERY important
