HPX250 brochure is up.

Looking at the Brochure one think struck me, it says that when changing between Pap noise filter 1 & 2 there is a 3 Fstop differance, I'm sure when i change it on my 371 it's just over 1 stop ? Looks like they have changed the noise filter slightly on this cam compared to the 371. If Barry gets one for testing i would love for him to look to see if they have removed the shifting noise effect :)

p.s. and it can go up to +30db gain compared to the 371 +24db look forward to seeing that one

As for flash banding, the 250 does have the Flash Band Compensation function, so that goes a long way towards mitigating that effect.
Barry, do you know if the AC-160/130 will have Flash Band Compensation or is it only available on the 250?

I would guess that it's only on the 250. The only camera in the lineup that has it is the HPX370, and the 250 is a handheld version of the 170.

The AC160 and AC130 aren't the same camera. They have the same lens and imaging chips, but the guts are different.

I imagine it will be another selling point for the HPX250 over the ac160.

It would have been nice to have it in the ac160.

HPX250 has lots of things the 160 doesn't, like AVC-Intra, standard-def recording, adjustable peaking, 10-bit SDI output. That's why it costs a grand more. Even so, the 160 does some things the 250 doesn't, like variable frame rate overcranking in 1080p.

It's tempting to think of them as the same camera with different recording formats, but there's a lot more to it than that.

I just scanned over the 130/160 brochure and didn't see any mention of it. Interesting if they left that function out... I imagine it would have been a big selling point with the wedding/event crowd, who I have a hard time seeing gravitating to the 250 over the 130/160.

Hmmm, pay attention: F11 to F8 is ONE f-stop difference, not three, the same is for F10 to F7.
There's a 1.4-factor relationship between a given f-stop and its next/previous.

Interesting that there are some test videos floating around youtube using the 160, but haven't seen with the 250 yet...

Hi Faust, yes i can see where you are coming from, I didnt really say quite what i meant to. I didnt think when i tried it that it moved the Fstop quite that much but i know where your coming from.

Coming from a dvx100,hmc150 and now a 371, i would have loved this cam last year. I love the small form factor but hated always having a small zoom range. Most of my filming is for personal use and i work alone, it is a major pain lugging a 371 and gear across fields etc to film wildlife but the 250 would be a breeze. I really look forward to seeing some footage from this cam.

Ok, I see.

BTW, the ac160/130 does record in standard-def DV.

I think the ac160 is less interesting because it would be bad to use for a wedding because it doesn't have a flash band compensation. It would have been a great selling factor for wedding shooters. I agree it will be great to film shows and events (without photographer around).

But I think I will still use my HMC150 a lot. Unless I go for the HPX250 eventually. But it cost more!

Does anyone know if the zoom on the 250 is better then the 200/170 - specifically start and stop - does it have the annoying bump?

i'm thrilled that the hpx250 is finally coming out.

barry, as always, thanks for being the point person on acquiring info.

we all look forward to your testing the cam when it finally becomes available.

be well

The HPX250 is of great interest to us for rental inventory. Our clients do a lot of green screen corporate work and our 170 does a good job, but an EX1 is superior in resolution and noise, although we typically record onto a Ki Pro to get 10-bit 4:2:2. The 250 gives us the full raster chip set, full raster codec, 10-bit recording and output, lower noise. Not needing a Ki Pro is a money saver.

A few weeks ago we did an HGTV shoot with our HPX2700 and HPX170. We ended up shooting all in DVCPRO HD because the director didn't want to record onto two different formats. With the HPX250, we would have had a camera that was sharper than the 170(sharper than the 2700 for that matter), full raster 10-bit recording, time code slaving, even genlock, when rolling on the same scene. To have a studio quality codec in a palmcorder is a powerful thing, but I think the full raster resolution at the front end is just as important. We have our order in!

Because I am so invested in P2 it looks like this year coming up this is the next cam for me- Just waiting for that "Barry" test and review on DVXuser and I'll pull the trigger.
