HPX250 brochure is up.

I really thought HPX 170 would be the last Hand Held P2 cam. Glad to be wrong this thing looks awesome. Nice Job Panny

So, FBC has finally been implemented, very good; :cheesy:
I wonder if it can do something in progressive mode, that has not been specified...

Selectable P.A.P. Filter Type, Yesss!

DRS... Not available in 1080/24p, 25p, 30p modes.
May it work in all 720p and Standard Def modes, then?

VFR @ 1080 (1-30 fps in 17 steps)
Excellent, it's a lot more than what Hpx370 offers.
Then it'll be possible to undercrank @ 1fps exploiting 1 second of exposure time!

Seems slightly strange, they have kept composite output, and dropped component. Hmm?

HDMI and SDI though.

It looks great.

I wonder, however, why no one has received the cam, and August has nearly come to an end.

Panasonic's press release three weeks ago indicated release by end of August.

I'll miss the Component analogue output together with the possibility of delivering fast quality copies to Beta SP tape, that's for sure...

Anyone know what the price is likely to be?
What problems is someone facing if this and an HMC-150 were used on a 2-cam shoot?

MSRP was announced at $5,995. No idea what street price will be.

Well, I mean, what type of problems would you anticipate? You'll likely have to spend a little time matching their looks beforehand, and the 250's image is going to be noticeably sharper and with cleaner noise and twice the color sampling, but I'm sure you could tweak them to get a pretty good two-camera match out of them.

Another cam (or two) to consider for an HMC150-match would be the AC160 or AC130, as they have the same lens & chips as the 250, but the back end is more comparable to the 150 -- same AVCCAM recording format, same menu structure, etc.

I saw on the spec sheet that it can shoot AVCHD but then on the bottom where it says recording formats, it only lists DV, DVCPRO HD and AVCINTRA. I think it'd be nice to be able to do AVCHD if you're shooting something that doesn't need the higher quality codecs, and you want to save disk space...

Anyone know what the USB host port is for?

Exactly, where did you read that?
Anyone know what the USB host port is for?
It is there for direct downloading P2 Cards content onto an external Hard Disk Drive.
The same function was available for the IEEE 1394 port only, on previous P2 camcorders, where menu settings allowed to choose a PC (device) mode or an HOST mode.
Maybe the Hpx250 could offer the same option for IEEE 1394 too...
-------------
The brochure says about USB 2.0 HOST MODE: "This allows files to be copied between an external HDD and a P2 card", then a note explains: "AG-HPX250EJ does not support to copy the files onto a P2 card via USB 2.0".

Are they referring to a camera model in particular?
Are they talking about the USB HOST port only, as I hope?... :undecided

No, it's USB only. All their recent products have done away with IEEE1394 Host mode and offer only USB mode, as far as I can tell.

The way I read it, they're probably going to introduce two models in Europe, one that has the ability to import files from a hard drive, and the other that doesn't ("EJ" model not having the ability to import the files). Presumably this would be a European tax law situation, where those who need the capability can pay a little more for it, and those that don't need it will have a cheaper model.

Yes, I believe so.

i just dont see it being "sell your 170 and rush out to buy me today" better
Well, that does depend on what you want. As I understand it, the 170 is going to stay a current model and will continue to be sold alongside the HPX250 -- and I can think of at least 2,000 reasons why (meaning, the HPX170 is like $2,000 less than the 250).

The major things the 250 offers over the 170 are things like:
A much more telephoto lens, 22x zoom vs. 13x zoom, 51mm vs. 86mm.
AVC-Intra instead of (well, in addition to) DVCPRO-HD
AVC-Intra gives full-raster 1920x1080, vs. DVCPRO-HD's 1280x1080
AVC-Intra gives 10-bit acquisition, vs. DVCPRO-HD's 8-bit
10-bit SDI output
Timecode sync port
Genlock port for true multi-camera work
Adjustable/controllable peaking
VFR in 1080 mode (up to 30p)

So, overall, you're looking at a camera that has sharper footage, better codec, more sensitivity with lower noise, and more connectivity. For some people those will constitute a must-have, for others they'll be just fine with the HPX170. The other thing that you can't really see on the spec sheet is the size difference; the HPX250's much bigger lens does make the camera bigger, whereas the 170's smaller and sleeker.

Any guesses on street price Barry?

Perhaps $5295.00?
No guess whatsoever. The HVX200's street price was MSRP for several months, due to demand and availability. I imagine a year from now it'll be around $5295, but when first released I wouldn't expect it to vary that much from MSRP, but we'll see...
