HPX170 Lens Wobble Improved

Used the Letus Ultimate, screwed onto its mount, on rails, and there is no possible wobble.

Barry,

I agree, the Letus Ultimate has worked well with the 170 once I added a second adapter support and the screw that goes through the support, into the adapter. It's important to make sure that screw is tight, especially with the force that a follow focus exerts laterally or just manual focus on the taking lens.

It's not an adapter(as in 35mm DOF), it's a lightweight Chrosziel sun shade. I really thought it would take care of the wobble, but it didn't.

Ah, I can understand why now.

I use this mount around my Brevis 35mm adapter:

Zero wobble even if I tried.

Regarding touching the focus ring while shooting, well, I do touch the focus ring while shooting, as do the professional DP's that rent my gear.

my bad, thought I read that you attached an adapter on it.

And of course you and your renters need to touch the focus ring... I stated that in terms of using the adapter (which you were not).

But I see what you meant in your post about the sun shade. Sorry that it didn't solve the dreaded wobble for you.

Hopefully a Panny fix will have you back in business soon.

WOW, seems somewhat drastic for Panasonic to be halting shipping on a major new Camera release for something that is a "NON-ISSUE"..

Kevin,

Have you read the entire thread? The halting of shipping is based on the secondary issue. The shock mount is a non-issue. It will continue to be a non-issue. The issue is that there is an opportunity for some cameras to have a wobble. That is what is stopping the production line.

Hope that clarifies things for you.

Best,

Jan

I've banged my original HVX-200 into trees and rocks out in the field that the shock mount would be a selling point to me.

The issue isn't that the cameras have shock mounts. The issue is that some lenses have excessive wiggle.
Panasonic will fix it and it'll still have the shock mount which will be a good thing when I'm carrying around my HPX-170 over my shoulder on my tripod and a whap a big tree limb with it.

170 + Ultimate runnin' and gunnin' around. I'm pretty off my rocker when it comes to handling Cameras and I haven't had an issue yet. I can, however, see where it would be an issue so hopefully Panasonic has something in store for those who already have the camera.

Rebate smells nice.

Good news, I am thinking of heading into NYC soon (real soon if anyone is interested) and stopping in B&H. I would think that I could check out the camera right there, right? Anyone shop there in person?

Hey, Ted! fwiw, B&H is closed through next Wednesday (according to their website). You may be aware of that by the time you read this.

Yeah, I saw that. Appreciate you looking out for me there, Terry.

I need to get a trip in to NYC before I leave NH and I had some free time right now. Hopefully my schedule will remain clear for next weekend. Besides... this actually gives me time to announce to a few people that I am heading that way.

Just itching to check out some gear in person!

The Fact that the "shock mount" is way too loose and causes the image to shift during focusing is the issue, it's one and the same.

And adding to what cameralover said, is there any literaturature about the shock mount? form any of the 3 cameras that have it?

I don't see that it would make it into any literature. It would be analogous to a car manufacturer calling out the fact that there are shock absorbers on the tires. It is a functional feature that is built in as a safe guard to the cameras. The HVX200 has it and for the last 3 1/2 years, no one has noticed it. The DVX100 has had it and for 6 years no one has noticed it. That said, it has probably paid off more times than the owners of these cameras know. And to conclude, unlike the car example it is harder to explain.

Actually it is not the shock mount that is causing the image to shift. It is the way that the lens and its shck mount are attached to the camera that is causing the problem. As people have noted through this laborius thread, the other cameras do not have the same play as the HPX. They both have a similar shock mount but internally the lens is mounted differently.

I hope that clarifies,

Jan

Jan,

After we order, how can we be assured of receiving a post-wobblegate camera? Ie..."cameras manufactured after serial no# _____ have been corrected, etc.."

Thanks,
Prof. Dunn

Indeed is true for HPX171, I'v got one affected by the Wobblegate, not worry about it though... I even mentioned to my vendor as he was handing me the camera... I'll just bring it back to him in a couple of weeks...

I fixed the problem!

it's cheap, and it adds major style points to the camera. In a pinch, it would work at least.

You should add a nice red R on there. It would add some style points and the Honda lovers would be all over your custom camera mod!

How come I don't get the "honda lover" reference? I own a honda. I love my honda. But I don't get your comment.
