HPX170 Lens Wobble Improved

The HPX170 does look noisier at 12db, so it is acting as expected, although 9db didn't show as much noise increase as I expected. I don't shoot at these kinds of gain settings normally, so I'm just interested in getting the noise reduced for 0db. A -3db setting would be great.

Hmmm... I'm having more second thoughts about this camera. I figured you were going crazy, but I just tried 12dB after someone else on these boards said "that's what I found too!" and...

It looks the same as 0dB just with more light.

I guess it might be time to go Sony...

ok, good, so I'm not going mad.

I just did another quick test and was able to get my image to look the same by stopping down at 9db then opening up at 0db.

I'll try to come up with some sort of test to post.

just got my 170 delivered to me this morning from b&h ....serial # starts with j8....
this means its already fixed right?

any new findings anyone?

Mine came back from Panasonic yesterday. The lens seems tighter but I never had noticeable wobble even before I sent it in. I just did it to be prudent and get the fix out of the way in case the lens mechanism loosened up later.

I guess I should have clarified. I was asking if anyone had anything new on the noise levels.

I will have something new, either today or tomorrow, because I've sourced an HVX200A to compare against. This question will get answered rather definitively very soon!

Same here. EVS and HDCameraRentals invited me in this week. I'll get some video comparisons as stills don't seem to show the noise differences well.

Yes, thanks for taking the trouble. I know that it is a PITA to hunt down two cameras and shoot tests on the spur of the moment.

I think that there has been enough noise about the noise to realize that there must be some difference, it's just a matter of how much.

Looking forward to your tests and analysis.

Barry, I'm totally stoaked that you're jumping on this to provide your input on the noise issue, er uh, non-issue. I personally see an increase in noise but when it comes to these things, Barry, you're my bible. :)

I'm just looking for what actually happens, and why. Now that I'll have production units of both, side by side, with controlled circumstances and charts, recording live to OnLocation, I should be able to eliminate all variables and find out just what in the heck is happening here...

Barry:

Are you going to post your results in this thread or are you starting a new thread for what you discover?

Ditto. I got mine back yesterday too. Apparently, Panasonic West (in Los Angeles) shipped it to Panasonic East (in New Jersey). I did not pay for shipping at all.

Anyway. the shockmounted lens is definitely sturdier now. Never was a problem for me before, but I also didn't want it to become a problem down the road.

Anyone know when Panasonic West in LA will be able to handle the fix? Trying to avoid a longer than necessary turnaround.

Hi David:

LA is not going to handle the fix, it will be done in Secaucus. They pay for overnight and they have same day turnaround. You are without your camera for three days, better than most local turnaround.

My understanding is that Specialized Communications also does this using the Panasonic fix.

I just sent my in, and from start to finish it was less than a week.

Pretty nice and you get a bag of candy; at least I did.
