How to get high quality widescreen footage

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Thanks a lot Barry :)
I Got the same question than Shaw.

Btw, I think tomorrow I will watch the Wim Wenders' dvx movie.
It's a small theater in Paris but I will get a real feeling about the blow up from the dvx.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Barry, I ran some more tests tonight with 864 vs. 720 and you are absolutely right, the 720 is sharper than the 864. Very subtle but looking at a highly detailed scene on a production monitor made it easy to see. So your theory is sound regarding 720 being superior to 864...

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Man, i would love to see more footage comparisons of this process. A few thoughts running through my mind. Am I hearing correctly that using this method, a person can get anamorphic like results without the adapter? I wonder if green screen work after an uprez would result in similiar results as before the uprez.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Yes, the footage is comparable to what you would get with the widescreen adapter. The best way to see comparisons is to conduct your own test...assuming you own a DVX

Don't know about green screen though....

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I have done some tests with Pal footage. The best results I have found is to uprezzing to 1024x819, then resized and croped to 720x576 in virtualdub (Precise Bicubic A=1.0).

If I uprez to 720*819, I have noticed aliasing on vertical lines in some images.

1024x818 images resized and croped in Vegas look softer than Virtualdub Precise Bicubic A=1.0

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Sorry to ask a stupid question, because I know that it has been hinted at, but would it still be better to use an anamorphic adapter?

I saw the footage that disjecta posted (thank you and wonderful as always) and it looks amazing. I have yet to get my DVX, but can the anamorphic adapter achieve that good of a look [disjecta's uprezzed footage] given the right operator of course? ;)

I've seen plenty of footage from the DVX, but the pinelake shot if stunning.

thank you very much,

J.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I have tested Virtualdub to uprezzing (Lanczos3), unsharp filter (not internal, the one made by Donald Graft, v1.4), resize with Precise bicubic A=1.0, cropped, all in Virtualdub, and this give me excellents results, as good as Photozoom does. Is someone can confirm my results?

For the tests, I don't use standard settings in Photozoom. I have reduce the radius to 1.0 (I've found it too large in the default mode)

Virtualdub is free, and the Donald Draft plugin also, and no need to convert to TGA.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

i havent seen any bicubic resampling that really comes close IMHO . i have photoshop CS and other graphics software and ive tried them all.. if you zoom into the image, and look at the colors, and smoothness and line definition up close youll notice a big difference.. that will definitely show up on the big screen

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

could you tell me the dimesions for pal systeme :

The values for

uprezzing :
resize :
cropped :

Thx (my natural lang. is french, excuse-me)

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I believe the resizing dimensions for PAL are the following:

For footage shot in letterbox mode on the camera, resize in Photozoom Pro to 720x768 and for footage you shot with squeeze, or with the anamorphic lens or where you have already cropped the letterbox off in another program, the size would be 720x576.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just working out the math here.

I am not talking about a standard Bicubic resize. Virtualdub has 4 bicubic modes. If you compare standard bicubic and Precise Bicubic A=1.0 , Precise Bicubic A=1.0 is more sharp than Bicubic. Try it:

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I'm going to be shooting a five minute short, and think I'll try this out. Is there a way that if I shoot it in letterbox and use this procedure that I can also convert it to 4:3 so that I have a widescreen and a standard version? This is a school project, so it won't happen real fast, but I'll gladly post if anyone is interested in the results.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I just covered this in the other thread with the tutorial but will answer it again.

My advice to you is shoot in regular 4x3 mode and put some semi-transparent tape over your LCD to indicate where the widescreen areas are for framing purposes. Edit your footage as a regular 4x3 project and create a master. When you are done, bring the 4x3 master into a new timeline and add a widescreen mask to it and render it out. You now have a letterboxed version of your project and you can procede with the uprezzing technique.

Make sense?

Hi, I'm really new to all this, been working with premiere pro 1.5 for a while though. Just wanted to know if the final footage will be in 16:9 aspect ratio or cinemascope aspect ratio (as shown on pinelake website)

Again... do someone know what 864x616 equals on a PAL system?
Right now, I'm cutting away the letterbox in photoshop and then upsize it in PhotoZoom to 1280x720. The result is good and works great as 720p, but does that create the same good result as this or am I missing something?

I tried this and it worked( 24pa) the only issue is that the 720x640 footage when fitted into a anamorphic timeline wouldn't fit, so I had to streatch it out and that cropped portions of the video. I also lost my synch.....before I exported I made a QT movie that plays back perfectly...also my uprezzed files when reimported into a QT movie
show up as 23.98 movie and i then reimport that asa anamorphic nonsquare pixel movie...looks great but sync is now off.

Nice thread... but! No sample images? What? Why!

Post some .png images of these conversions.

And if you have the time, do a little test between photoshop, ae, etc. with the same images.

EDIT: I'm thinking that the dvx does the uprez in 4.4.4 colorspace... and does a better job at this.
