How to get high quality widescreen footage

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Uprezzing squeeze footage from a 4x3 timeline does not create such a dramatic change in resolution, in fact I barely noticed a difference between the squeeze footage and the uprezzed version on a 16x9 timeline. I suspect you are right about the NLE resizing, Barry.

So in-camera letterbox it is, without a doubt.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Thanks for taking the time to investigate all of this guys. I've been following this thread with a lot of interest.
What exactly is the difference between Photozoom and Photozoom Pro, other than price?
One crucial difference is that the Pro version supports batch processing of files. It would be near impossible, I would think, to use the regular version for video work. The Pro version allows you to import and process a thousand files at once, whereas the regular (non-Pro) version would require you to open, process, save and close each and every frame.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

..i want to note that i changed a figure above. if your resizing the whole 4:3 image it should be 864 x 640 not 864 x 648      ..my math was off before

...im not really sure if it actually helps to go to 864 vs staying at 720 and letting the NLE do a pixel aspect rezise horizontally on import to a 16:9 project.  i suppose if i cant tell after some more testing then i might as well save the processing time and go with 720 :)

barry , have you heard any word on the video version? last i asked them they said that it was not a high priority thing, and that theyve got alot of stuff in the works so they couldnt say any sort of released date.. im thinking that by the time they actually get it done for release we will have HD 24p cine cams anyway, and not really care about it.. :P

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I checked the 864 vs. 720 on a 50 inch plasma and there is no difference at all to my eyes and a few others who looked at it critically. For my example, I used a highly detailed scene.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

so 720 x 640  would be the resize .. or 720 x 480 if your uprezzing a cropped (720 x 360) image.  ;)

cool , that saves time and space  :)

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Barry you said that after the uprez on Photozoom Pro, the image in ur tests looked 'sharper' than the one shot using the anamorphic lens and was comparable to JVC Hd cam.

Do u think the difference would be more pronounced shooting through the PAL DVX, with 470,000 pixels ccds?

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

The difference between what... between an original PAL frame and the up-rezzed PAL frame? Obviously the more resolution you have to start with, the more you'll have when you're done, so there would probably be less of a perceived difference if you started with a higher-resolution source.

Is that what you meant?

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

partly yes...

but if the program is interpolating the given number of pixels....why the perceived difference should be less....to my mind it should be more...NO?

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I created a new thread with the step by step procedure. IAL and Barry, please verify that I haven't missed anything.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Well, the difference between 576 uprezzed to 1080 is not going to be as dramatic a difference as 480 uprezzed to 1080. From PAL you're creating 504 pixels, from NTSC you're creating 600 pixels, so there's a bigger difference going from NTSC as compared to going from PAL...

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Got it...and thanks Barry.

I was also wondering whether your upcoming dvd contains any separate chapter or section on the PAL DVX.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Barry, can you make the tutorial thread a sticky please?

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

There's plenty of discussion about the PAL DVX, I tried to make sure I referenced it wherever appropriate. However there's nothing specifically separate about it, I just put in info about how its 25P mode works as vs. the 24P, 24PA and 30P on the NTSC camera, etc...

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Just curious - does photoshop have a limit on the number of images it can batch process? If not it might be interesting to get a hold of the Genuine Fractals plugin and see what sort of results you can get.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

Very, very interesting. :) I liked very much your footage Disjecta. The second part looks really filmlook.

For my education : Do you think when they blow up from DV to film 35mm, they use this kind of method ?

Even, if it's more expensive, do you think it's better to upsize ourselves with photozoom pro and give them the upsized result to do the blow up ?

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

I'm not Disjecta, but I can answer that (at least as far as DVFilm's film blowups go): yes they do this same type of process. DVFilm up-rezzes to 1920x1080 before blowing up to film.

Re: How to get high quality widescreen footage

i need to try this somehow in liquid edition. edition has the best algorithms for this scaling stuff (6lobs XXXX don´t know exactly, but it is amazing and beats Photoshop easy). maybe i can import a 4:3 timeline into a 16:9 project and simply "uprez" . i will let you know.
