How many would compete?

I'm wondering how many Canon HDV owners in the dvxuser community plan to, or would lilke to throw their hat into the SpyFest ring?

I plan on taking a crack at it and I wondered how many others were thinking about it?

If it's going on close to the summer time then I would definitely take a crack at it. But the contest is still restricted to DVX or HVX so that's kind of a bummer.

At some point that could happen at xlcinema, or hell, I'm game to help make it happen on this forum. We could have our own hype threads, etc.

The idea is to encourage the process for everyone, and like Barry's said--do something that reflects the community. With the scores of A1 owners showing up it could be pretty interesting.

I'm all for a more open fest atmosphere if it's at all possible becuse there are lots of people that bought Canon gear but stuck around for the great community.

I'll kick in and see if I can arrange some decent prizes, whether Canon only or part of the dvxuser fest.

Sounds great. That'd be pretty sweet if they opened it up to DVX, HVX, and A1, but that might be "unloyal."

I'd compete for sure, though.

Thing is, if they open it up to A1, then might as well let FX1, V1U, HD110 etc. in as well, makes no sense to limit to just two companies.

who cares if they say "only for dvx/hvx", theres a little friend called lying. I bet if someone kepth thier mouth shut, no one would be the wiser. What are the requirments for spyfest?

That's lame. It's all about community involvement and feedback anyway.

Sure, if you made a really kickass short, it would be nice to actually have a chance to win, but for me the growth process is much more important than winning a few prizes.

ditto, its always been about the experiance / adventure for me.

It is. But it's nice to have that extra motivation. And you can't tell me the people who do the 'fests don't consider the thrill of competition a prize as well.

well of course they CONSIDER the prize, but theres a differce between shooting a film because your trying to win a prize and shooting a film because thats what you love doing. Now when you shoot a film because thats what you love doing AND THEN win the prize, all the more power to you.

It's kinda hard to explain but I'll try. Yes, I understand that it's about the process and not about the prize. But before I undertake a new project I have to know exactly WHY I'm doing it. Entering a contest without any hope of winning is rather anti-climatic to me when I know that I'm not even in the running. Kinda like a car race where only one brand of vehicle is allowed, but other racers with different cars can race "just for the fun of it." Now other people can feel differently, and I respect that. It would be interesting if one of the mods chime in and give us a number on how many people entered the previous 'fests using different cameras. I suspect that it's a small minority. Keep in mind that I'm not saying people are selfish if they choose not to enter for exhibition, but maybe the fact that the contest excludes them as a rule rob them of that extra incentive.

If lying is your "friend", and you would have no qualms with cheating our fest, you may want to reconsider whether this community is the right place for you.

Very, very few. Usually no more than 2 or 3.

It's not supposed to be a "contest" at all. It's supposed to be a fest. We've seriously debated whether upping the prizes was a good idea at all, especially after Jarred and I (and Pete from Abel) spent thousands each to put up an HVX as the top prize last time. It brought out a new element of ugliness that, frankly, I don't think we want to see repeated. We may be better off offering token prizes (like a box of tapes) just so people don't think that this is supposed to be a contest about prizes.

I think the film that best suits the fest, and the one I'd vote for if it was eligible, is "Katrina." A group of about 15 long-term DVXUser members got together and pulled off a well-executed, well-crafted short film. They're not in it for the prizes, they're in it to grow their skills, to work together, to build a team, one that they'll take forward into future projects. Might be the best film in the fest, and (due to length restrictions) it's not even eligible.

I'll take that bet
