There is absolutely no aperture control in Filmic pro. You are thinking of just exposure control. Exposure can be adjusted via ISO, Aperture, Shutter and ND filtering. The lens is what controls aperture on a camera and those tiny lenses have no aperture at all. When you adjust exposure on a iPhone its strictly using shutter speed for bright scenes and ISO for darker scenes. Aperture are the blades that physically move to limit ho much light hits the sensor.
Now if one can create a very well structured lighting setup to create just the right lighting conditions they can be great cameras. If one has the crew to do that however why bother with a phone camera? So many better options out there for that kind of production. Thats why I find it odd that Apple is promoting the new iPhone for film production and creative DOF control.
I don't make excuses for it because I want them to fix it. If we all just roll over and accept it Apple will never address it. Film makers complained about the lack of DOF control and Apple knew they would never take it seriously if they didn't come up with a solution. Now we need to demand they come up with an aperture solution.
You can somewhat change the DOF using the focus control dial with Filmic Pro. Even some rake focus. I do like having the dial on a DSLR to change those settings but it can be done on an iPhone. Maybe even using a Moment Tele lens will help with DOF.
I guess you could ask Steven Soderbergh, Zack Snyder, Sean Baker and others, but I guess for different reasons. Cost, camera size, low budget etc. They were using iPhones 5 and 7 too.
A quote from Kathryn Bigelow, “The iPhone doesn’t require any ancillary pieces of equipment …with so much accessibility, I think all pretension tends to disappear. And so it makes the set and the filming process much less apprehensive…It’s a completely integrated process now”.
The iPhone 13 seems to be the start of getting better DOF.
